Top 10 Sci-Fi Weapons From Film
#10- Phaser “Star Trek” Series (1979-)
Kicking off our list is the iconic beam weapons that influenced countless others! Introduced in the 60s television series before making its presence known on the big screen, it has regularly changed appearance. Regardless, these versatile particle weapons commonly feature stun, kill and disintegrate settings. Sure, you’d think that the peaceful federation wouldn’t have given their weapons the ability to vaporize, but we’re sure they have their reasons…
#9- Sonic Shotgun “Minority Report” (2002)
In this future, murder has been all but eradicated. As such, even the weapons used by law enforcement are designed to non-lethally subdue targets. While we love the sick stick, which totally earns its name, it’s the Sonic Shotgun that steals the show. Throwing concussive waves, this bad ass toy has a stylish reload method and can totally knocks people out, far out. Bonus points if used in a factory with lots’ a stuff to knock over.
#8- ZF-1 “The Fifth Element” (1997)
Created by Zorg industries, the ZF-1 is truly the Swiss army knife of sci-fi weaponry. It’s so cool, even intergalactic space mercinaries drool over it. A true spokesman for his company, Zorg himself lists off its features with gleeful pride. Setting aside the terrible atrocities this gun has the potential to enact, the real injustice here is that Bruce Willis never gets to use one …
#7- Arc Gun “District 9” (2009)
This devastating alien energy weapon can only be used by Prawn aliens, as well as one unfortunately genetically altered human. Firing an accelerated electric current, it causes organic targets to instantly superheat and explode, like an egg in the microwave (go on, try it). No, there is no stun feature, just a whole lot of zap, crackle and pop.
#6- The Noisy Cricket “Men In Black” (1997)
This tiny weapon is the most deceiving on our list. Despite its handy palm size, it’s one of the most powerful weapons in the MIB’s arsenal! Launching a large orb of pure energy, it has an insane amount of recoil, which tosses its user like a crash test dummy. It even makes a cricket like sound upon firing, hence the name. It’s convenient size makes it the most portable alternative to a bazooka available, just don’t fire it when you’re on a roof or bridge or something…
#5- Bone Gun “eXistenZ” (1999)
A one of a kind sci-fi firearm, this gross gun is capable of sneaking by security checkpoints completely undetected, as it is entirely constructed out of genetic material. Bullets? Nah, this gun’s ammo comes in the form of human teeth. Unlike any other gun from sci-fi, this one can easily be pieced together from the refuse bin at a shady Chinese restaurant.
#4- M41A Pulse Rifle “Aliens” (1986)
The standard issue rifle for the Colonial marines, the M41A is extremely rugged, and is resistant to almost anything an alien environments can dish out. Basically the M16 of the future, its under slung grenade launcher, shot counter and iconic sound make it the go to gun for xeno busting. Fun trivia fact, the Pulse Rifles used in Aliens are all actually all WW2 era Thompson machine guns under plastic cosmetic shells. Even in the future, classics are still classics.
#3- Lawgiver Pistol “Judge Dredd” (1995) and “Dredd” (2012)
Yet another all in one gun, this one is much more portable and badass. The only weapon needed by the street Judges, voice commands allow the Lawgiver to switch ammo and firing types on the fire. These range from standard ammo, which can be used for both single and rapid fire, heat seeking, ricochet, incendiary, armor piercing and high explosive rounds. Best of all, it includes a “handy” anti-theft feature…
#2- The Proton Pack “Ghostbusters” (1984)
All right, you got us, this isn’t intended to be used against anything other than ghosts, or the occasional marshmallow man. However, these nuclear powered accelerators with a half-life of five thousand years are beyond iconic, and capable of massive damage. What other sci-fi weapon has the potential to end all life in the universe if used incorrectly? Man, just the switch on sound tells you that these things mean business!
#1- LightSaber “Star Wars” (1977-)
Was there any doubt? Taking the top spot on our list is the Jedi/Sith energy blade weapon from a more civilized time. A laser sword that comes in various shapes, with personalized blade colors, they are able to cut through nearly anything, and can even deflect blaster fire. The most iconic sci-fi weapon ever, light sabers are universally for their distinct hum and the flashy visuals they produce.
