#10: “Hit the Lights”
When the Sun Goes Down (2011)
Selena knows how to get the party going, and this song has the perfect dance club feel. With its up-tempo beat and lyrics about losing yourself to the music, she takes listeners along with her on a feel-good journey. It’s easy to forget about the stresses of everyday life when Selena commands everyone to “hit the lights” and “let the music move you.” The song was Selena’s final single with her backing band before their hiatus, and for it they scored the Teen Choice Award for group Choice Single. It is so choice.
#9: “Naturally”
Kiss & Tell (2009)
This early Selena song is still one of her most fun songs to date. It’s a combination electropop and dance-pop, with a few disco beats thrown in, giving it a joyous, poppy feel. She sings of a relationship that’s in a great place because of the natural connection between the two people involved. Her voice is euphoric as she hits the high notes and exclaims how naturally the relationship evolves. This multi-platinum song was Selena’s first to make a serious impact on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number twenty-nine.
#8: “Good For You (ft. A$AP Rocky)”
Revival (2015)
As the first single off of her second album, this song was forefront in presenting Selena moving in a sexier, more adult direction. The original song was written in 45 minutes but was actually deemed “too indie” to be a Selena track. But with her connecting with the song's message of confidence, she re-worked the lyrics to make them her own. She lets A$AP rap a verse on the track but make no mistake, it’s her breathy vocals and self-assurance that carry the song. It made it to number five on the US Billboard charts becoming Selena’s highest charting single to date.
#7: “A Year Without Rain”
A Year Without Rain (2010)
Featured on her second album with The Scene, this track shows a departure from her earlier work. While the song still fits in with her other dance songs, musically it’s a more mature Eurodance ballad that really shows off her vocal range in the soaring notes of the chorus. The yearning in her voice pulls listeners in, as she compares not seeing her lover for a day to a yearlong drought. It was the group’s third top forty single and Gomez also recorded the tune in Spanish, which sounds especially beautiful and haunting.
#6: “Slow Down”
Stars Dance (2013)
From the opening line Selena’s in control, as she commands the listeners attention so she can “steal ya for a rhythm intervention.” As the second single from her debut album as a solo artist, Selena made it clear that she’s still a queen of dance songs, this time with an EDM influence. In the music video, Selena races through the streets of Paris in a vintage Mercedes- an image that got Selena into some trouble with critics saying that it looked eerily similar to footage of Princess Diana’s death. Selena not only bounced back from the controversy but saw the single go platinum.
#5: “Who Says”
When the Sun Goes Down (2011)
This song is undeniably one of Selena’s signature feel good anthems. Unlike earlier songs with the Scene, this track is more stripped down than their dance songs, and offers a fresh, acoustic sound matched with the lightness in her voice. She released the song with good intentions; it was meant to uplift and inspire fans, especially shedding light on unhealthy situations like cyberbullying. After listening to this one, you can’t help but to feel better. We’d say her mission was accomplished.
#4: “The Heart Wants What It Wants”
For You (2014)
Heartbreak never sounded so good. Released after her break-up with on-and-off again boyfriend, Justin Bieber, this is one of her most personal and emotional songs to date. She sings of someone who’s torn between wanting a no-good ex and trying to move on. The lyrics are vulnerable and wrought with feeling, making it easy for listeners to relate to. Selena performed the song for the first time at the 2014 American Music Awards, and broke down in tears during the duration of the performance, which allowed audiences to see her softer side.
#3: “Same Old Love”
Revival (2015)
Minimalist and striking with its finger snapped beat, this song was one of the most unique hits that played on 2015 pop radio. One of the song’s writers was pop sensation, Charli XCX, giving it the no-nonsense attitude that she's known for. It’s an anthem for people wanting more out of their relationships and not willing to settle for a toxic situation. In the video Selena celebrates those who have had enough and are willing to go after they want; the same can be said for Gomez who continues to showcase her growth with songs like this.
#2: “Love You like a Love Song”
When the Sun Goes Down (2011)
This tongue-in-cheek tune is a fun way to approach making over-the-top declarations of love. Selena tells us that she knows that there’s nothing new to say in love songs but she flips the typical love song conventions on its head by making it a carefree, karaoke anthem instead of a heart-wrenching ballad. The “beep beeps” beg for listeners to sing along and Selena’s vocals are some of her most inviting. The song’s catchiness and dance ability is undeniable and it even earned it a spot on Just Dance 4.
Before we unveil our number one pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

Kiss & Tell (2009)
“Hands to Myself”
Revival (2015)
“Birthday”
Stars Dance (2013)
#1: “Come & Get It”
Stars Dance (2013)
As the lead single off her debut solo album, Selena knew that she was taking a chance and making a statement with this one. No longer a cute, Disney tween, Gomez uses this powerful track to declare that she’s grown up to be a confident, capable woman who makes her own decisions, especially when it comes to her body. The song is sultry with a bhangra beat and an Indian influence, giving it an infectious quality as she challenges her unnamed lover to come and get it. Her new direction worked and the song became her first top ten hit in the US.
