#10: “Oh My God I Think I Like You”
“Why Is Josh in a Bad Mood?”
Although Rebecca spends most of the first season trying to win over ex-boyfriend Josh, she also develops a budding romance with Greg. At first, the friends with benefits insist that their relationship is strictly casual. After several sexual encounters and cold showers, however, Rebecca begins to confront her true feelings. This song will resonate with anybody that’s ever been uncertain about their relationship status. The lyrics can get rather racy as Rebecca sings about her lady parts getting torn apart, but the number still manages to be sweet, charming, and romantic in its own bizarre way - which epitomizes the show’s tone in a nutshell.
#9: “Face Your Fears”
“I Hope Josh Comes to My Party!”
Paula is the motivational mother figure Rebecca never had. Above all else, she encourages Rebecca to follow her dreams and face her fears. If this hilarious song proves anything, though, it’s that sometimes you should run from your fears. With the uplifting charisma of a choir singer, Paula lays down a well-meaning, but misguided, life lesson: if you believe in yourself, nothing can harm you, be it a bear or a burning building. Rebecca is baffled to say the least and the confusion only escalates when a children’s chorus runs in with giant scissors. How can a song be so inspirational while also being wrong on so many levels? That’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” for ya.
#8: “It Was a Shit Show”
“When Will Josh and His Friend Leave Me Alone?”
Despite sharing a genuine connection, Rebecca and Greg were a formula for dysfunction. Greg eventually decides that it’d be best for everyone if he left town. When Rebecca tracks him down at the airport, Greg speaks the hard truth: he loves her, but what they had was – for lack of a better word – “a s*** show.” The bittersweet melody is exactly what you’d expect from a song about nostalgia and saying goodbye. It even calls Frank Sinatra’s version of “My Way” to mind. Of course what separates it from that song are the brutally honest lyrics, as Greg delves into the disaster that was their relationship. Talk about leaving on a high note.
#7: “Feeling Kinda Naughty”
“Josh's Girlfriend Is Really Cool!”
Rebecca finds herself in an awkward situation when she goes out for a night on the town with Josh and his girlfriend, Valencia. Matters become even more uncomfortable as Rebecca develops a girl crush on her rival. “Feeling Kinda Naughty” starts off as a flirty song about experimentation, akin to Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” As the tune progresses, though, the lyrics go from risqué to flat-out psychotic. Taking her obsession a few steps too far, Rebecca fantasizes about kidnapping Valencia and assuming her identity. Suddenly, the playful slumber party going on in Rebecca’s head starts to feel more like “Fatal Attraction: The Musical.” Hey, they don’t call her the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend for nothing.
#6: “I’m a Good Person”
“Josh and I Are Good People!”
Rebecca has made some questionable decisions, but does that really make her a bad person? Greg seems to think so. Determined to prove him wrong, Rebecca sets out to get Darryl custody of his daughter. Afterwards, she returns to Greg’s bar to rub her good deed in his face. The irony here speaks for itself. As Rebecca gloats about her kind, giving nature, she demonstrates just how egotistical, and inconsiderate she can be. The broadcast version of this surprisingly upbeat song is a laugh riot, but the explicit version cranks Rebecca’s poor behavior up to eleven. Capping off the tune with an f-bomb and a middle finger, it’s like a mic drop of bad taste.
#5: “You Stupid Bitch”
“That Text Was Not Meant for Josh!”
When a rock through a window drives Josh away, Rebecca sings the ultimate song about self-loathing. Ironically, Rebecca has rarely looked this glamorous, sporting a glittery dress before an adoring crowd of fans. Rebecca’s feelings don’t match her appearance, however, as she condemns herself for ruining everything. To a certain extent, this song almost sounds like something Celine Dion or Barbra Streisand would sing. On the flipside, the lyrics would be more appropriate at a ruthless celebrity roast. A song that pulls no punches, the audience isn’t sure whether to laugh or give Rebecca a hug. All we know for sure is that she’s literally hit rock bottom.
#4: “The Math of Love Triangles”
“All Signs Point to Josh... Or Is It Josh’s Friend?”
Rebecca might be an intelligent brunette, but she dons the persona of dumb blonde for this number, which pays homage to Marilyn Monroe. Instead of diamonds, though, Rebecca is more interested in triangles, love triangles to be precise. Torn between Josh and Greg, she enlists a chorus of professors to explain the math of love triangles. Far from an honor student, Rebecca only takes away one thing from this lesson: she’s the center of the triangle. With clever lyrics and sharp satire, this song adds up to a pitch perfect equation for grade A comedy. Oh great, now we’re making math puns…
#3: “Settle For Me”
“I'm Going on a Date with Josh's Friend!”
Greg can tell from the beginning that Rebecca’s got the hots for Josh, but he has no problem with being her consolation prize. Borrowing a page from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, he whisks Rebecca away to a black and white setting. Looking especially dapper, Greg tries to convince her to settle for him. Although Greg acknowledges that he pales in comparison to Josh, this song is anything but second-rate. As a matter of fact, it even scored an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music and Lyrics. The tune is like an enchanted daydream with a cynical layer of a harsh reality, showing us just how wonderful romance can be if we drastically lower our expectations.
#2: “The Sexy Getting Ready Song”
“Josh Just Happens to Live Here!”
You know the saying: “It’s going to get worse before it gets better?” That pretty much sums up this song, which centers on Rebecca getting ready for a party. The melody might be tantalizing, but this revealing tune explores all the messy, uncomfortable work that goes into looking sexy. The laborious process involves plucking hairs from your face, waxing some highly sensitive areas, and squeezing into underwear that accentuates curves in all the right places. Seeing what happens behind the scenes really takes the magic out of the illusion. Rapper Nipsey Hussle is forever changed after witnessing this shocking sight, making him appreciate everything women endure to achieve unrealistic beauty standards.
Before we get to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
“Dream Ghosts”
"Josh Has No Idea Where I Am!"
“I Have Friends”
“I Hope Josh Comes to My Party!”
“JAP Battle”
“Josh and I Go to Los Angeles!”
#1: “West Covina”
“Josh Just Happens to Live Here!”
It’s the song that commenced a new chapter into Rebecca’s life, as well as her descent into craziness. After running into Josh, Rebecca abandons her New York job for West Covina, California. The city isn’t exactly what you’d call dazzling, but the lovesick Rebecca is so enamored that she can put a positive spin on anything. While it’s painfully clear why Rebecca moved across the country, she refuses to admit that Josh played any role in her decision, insisting that he just so happens to live here. Complete with a marching band and giant pretzel, this over-the-top production number brings the glitz of Broadway to sunny La La Land, only two hours from the beach.
