Top 10 Stars You Forgot Appeared on Smallville
#10: Cobie Smulders
This actress is best known these days for her roles as Robin on “How I Met Your Mother” and Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but her part on “Smallville” was considerably less heroic. Smulders played Shannon Bell, a legal assistant and former lover of Lex Luthor. After being rejected by the young, bald budding villain, Shannon murders another of Lex’s former lady loves and frames him for it to get revenge, even killing her own boss to lure him into a trap. The jilted murderer really shows off Smulders’ range as an actress and we’d love to see her as a villain again.
#9: Tyler Posey
The star and protagonist of “Teen Wolf,” Tyler Posey may still be a young actor, but he was even younger when he starred on “Smallville.” Posey played Javier Ramirez, a young immigrant worker at a farmer neighboring the Kents. While in the country illegally, Ramirez and friends are being forced to work as slave labor on the farm by a metahuman with the ability to tunnel underground. With Clark’s aid, Ramirez is able to save his friends and reunite with his mother, who was already a resident.
#8: Lizzy Caplan
One of the few entries on our list to have a recurring role, Lizzy Caplan, who is famous now for her role on “Masters of Sex,” played one of “Smallville”’s first “freaks of the week” antagonists, Tina Greer. Greer was a former friend of Lana Lang, who, in her first appearance tries to supplant Lana using her shapeshifting abilities after appearing to be jealous of her life. In her second appearance, though, Greer has realized that it was actually love she was feeling for Lana, or at least obsession. Regardless, her fixation leads her to a violent end.
#7: Cory Monteith
Primarily known for playing Finn on “Glee,” the late Cory Monteith also appeared on “Smallville” in a rather minor role in the show’s fifth season. When Clark’s friend Chloe Sullivan looks into a sorority that Lana joins, she finds that its members have vampiric powers. While Monteith obviously doesn’t play one of its members, he does appear as a partygoer at the group’s Halloween party, playing a frat boy dressed as a cowboy that dances with Lana. The actor may be gone now, but we hope seeing him in a cowboy outfit will make you “gleeful” nonetheless.
#6: Evangeline Lilly
Although she became internationally famous for her playing Kate on “Lost,” as well as Hope van Dyne/The Wasp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evangeline Lilly got her start as a mere extra on “Smallville.” The actress primarily played a background student or students at Smallville High, although her first appearance as the girlfriend of a football player/gang leader was fairly prominent. It just goes to show that sometimes to become a star you first need to be onscreen, no matter how little time or focus is spent on you.
#5: Adam Brody
Kansas got a little taste of California when Adam Brody, most famous for his part on “The O.C.,” appeared on “Smallville.” Brody played Justin Gaines, an artist who lost the ability to use his hands after a car accident, and who dates Chloe. Unbeknownst to her, Gaines developed the metahuman ability to move things with his mind, allowing him to continue to draw, as well as take murderous revenge on those he felt had robbed him of the use of his hands, which is a far cry from the Chrismukkah spirit if you ask us!
#4: Ian Somerhalder
Prior to his stints on “The Vampire Diaries” or even “Lost,” Ian Somerhalder had a recurring part during “Smallville”’s third season as “Adam Knight.” At first seeming to be an ordinary guy who becomes close to Lana after her physical therapy, Adam is eventually revealed to be a spy, sent by Lionel Luthor, Lex’s father, in order to get close to her, and therefore Clark, in order to uncover the Boy of Steel’s secret. Not only that, “Adam” is only an alias, given to him after he was resurrected using a serum that he must take in order to live. When he runs out… he doesn’t handle it well.
#3: Jensen Ackles
Before hitting it big with another long-lasting CW genre show with his starring turn on “Supernatural,” Jensen Ackles first featured on “Smallville” during its fourth season. Ackles played Jason Teague, who, besides acting as the assistant football coach at Smallville High, also dated Lana Lang and assisted his mother in trying to uncover powerful Kryptonian artifacts. This quest takes him to darker and darker places as the season goes on, to the point where he kidnaps both the Kent and Luthor families in pursuit of the truth. Thankfully, this “wayward son” would only stay one season, giving him the chance to take on his most famous role.
#2: Carrie Fisher
Remember Chloe’s investigation into the vampire sorority? Well, as it happens Ms. Sullivan takes on the assignment in order to impress the editor-in-chief at the Daily Planet, Pauline Kahn, played by Carrie Fisher herself, the late actress renowned the world over for portraying Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” franchise. Kahn is a tough as nails career newswoman, who is Chloe’s “only hope” at jumpstarting her own professional life as a journalist. Ultimately, Kahn is impressed, sort of, with Chloe’s work on the story and gives her a job as an intern at the newspaper, before vanishing to somewhere far, far away, because she only appears once.
Before we get to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
Paul Wesley
Brian Austin Green
Tori Spelling
#1: Amy Adams
We said no classic “Superman” stars, but this actress didn’t play Lois Lane until after she appeared on “Smallville!” Amy Adams, besides being in the DCEU, is an Academy Award nominated actress, but she got her start doing guest starring roles on television, including one in “Smallville”’s first season. Adams played Jodi Melville, an overweight classmate of Clark’s who slims down after drinking vegetable shakes dusted with Kryptonite. Unfortunately, they also increase her metabolism to the point where food doesn’t satisfy her; leading her to devour fat from bodies directly. Who knew she could do horror too?
