Reboots can be tricky, especially if they aren't handled by the right minds. After all, “Gossip Girl” set the bar quite high. But fans don't have to worry about its essence and integrity being respected. In effect, the creators and executive producers from the show’s first iteration are at the helm of the new version! Joshua Safran, Stephanie Savage, and Josh Schwartz are all back, and seemingly better than ever! With them in charge, we can be confident that the show will deliver. They know where this world needs to go, and are the best people to take us there. If anybody knows how to reimagine “Gossip Girl,” it’s definitely this team.

#8: The Voice of Gossip Girl

For better or worse, Dan Humphrey was technically Gossip Girl. It's no secret that it's not his voice we hear when we think of the character though. Kristen Bell really put her stamp on the original series with her voiceover work. She was a huge part of what made it special, which is why her cameo in the series finale had everyone jumping for joy! Luckily, Bell has signed on to voice our favorite anonymous icon for the reboot as well. Years may have passed, but it's nice to know that no matter what Gossip Girl looks like in 2021, she still sounds exactly the same. We know we love her -

#7: The Cast & Their Characters

It’s time to meet Manhattan’s new elite. Thanks to Instagram, we even know a little about their personalities! To start, Jordan Alexander plays Julien Calloway, the “influence” of the group. Then, Thomas Doherty’s Max Wolfe embodies “freedom,” Eli Brown’s Otto Bergmann is labeled “privilege,” and Evan Mock’s Akeno Menzies is dubbed “innocence.” Further, signs point to Emily Lind’s character Audrey Hope - who is described as “grace” - echoing Blair Waldorf’s classic aesthetic. But it wouldn’t be Gossip Girl without a newcomer! Whitney Peak’s Zoya Lott, classified as “perspective,” fills those shoes. Plus, we find Zión Moreno as Luna La and Savannah Smith as Monet de Hann. Their descriptors are “style” and “power,” respectively. Finally, Tavi Gevinson is Kate Keller, a teacher characterized as “ambition.” Color us intrigued.

#6: More Diversity

Top 10 Most Unhinged Gossip Girl Moments

Though "Gossip Girl" was a cultural phenomenon, there is no doubt it fell short when it came to representation. The main cast was largely white, and the focus was typically on heterosexual relationships. The new version seeks to rectify that. With an opportunity to dive into what the world of New York's elite looks like today, Joshua Safran made sure to do things differently. Namely, he put together a racially diverse cast, and made sure there was plenty of LGBTQ+ content. In other words, he set out to create a universe that better represented reality. Thus, we can expect the show to dive deep and explore race and sexuality in a fresh way!

At this point, you’re probably wondering what this show is all about. Well, the official description states that, “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl.” The synopsis also specifies that the omnipresence of social media and the modern realities of New York high society are explored. Thanks to the trailer, we know that the series follows a tight-knit group of friends who think they have high school figured out. But outsider Zoya - who happens to be Queen Bee Julien’s half-sister - complicates things. Her arrival, paired with the emergence of Gossip Girl, threatens to destroy the social order. We can’t wait!

Top 10 Times Gossip Girl Tackled Serious Issues

While we were all focused on trying to figure out who Gossip Girl was last time, that's not the point anymore. The all-knowing force seems to be a more ambiguous and all-encompassing presence this time around. Given the evolution of social media and everyone’s widespread access to it, the decision makes sense. Of the shift, Josh Schwartz said that “there was something really interesting about this idea that we are all Gossip Girl now.” We know there will be an Instagram account, but the rest is still unclear. Joshua Safran told Cosmopolitan he hopes to spark discussions once the show airs and more details are revealed. We’re already on the edge of our seats!

#3: The Original World

Since the new “Gossip Girl” takes place in the same universe as its predecessor, there are parallels to be drawn. Namely, these teens will attend St. Judes and Constance Billard, and hang out on the steps of the Met - just like the generation before them! In addition, Eric Daman - who was the original series’ costume designer - is behind the new cohort’s outfits. While they will have evolved to reflect today's fashion, there’s no doubt they'll be as trendy as ever (x-ref)! Moreover, the creators have entertained the possibility of the old cast participating if they feel so inclined, though no cameos are confirmed. Even if they don’t return, though, the characters will definitely still refer to the teens that started it all!

#2: A Different Tone

Top 10 Gossip Girl Storylines the Show Forgot About

Despite its similarities with the original, the new series isn’t a traditional reboot. Since the time the original Gossip Girl went offline, things have changed. That’s going to be reflected in the tone of the show. For instance, Brooklyn is no longer the social Siberia it was once depicted as. Plus, Joshua Safran made it clear that “catfights and slut-shaming” are now a thing of the past. As for the characters’ lavish lifestyles? These teens understand the privilege their affluence affords them, and have some complex feelings about it. In sum, the show is going to be tuned in to current social issues, while still delivering the drama we live for!

Which Gossip Girl Character Are You Based On Your Sign?

The biggest thing we know about the new “Gossip Girl” is what we don't know. And it's a major piece of the puzzle. In effect, a potential bombshell is being kept under metaphorical lock and key. Gossip Girl has eyes everywhere, but the rest of us will have to exercise patience until the show's debut. The irony of the situation is too perfect to be mad at! No matter what the specifics of this elusive surprise are, it's safe to say it will blow everybody's minds. Whether the shock will rival the reveal of Gossip Girl’s identity in the original finale remains to be seen.
