Top 10 Things We Want to See In Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse: Part One

Top 10 Things We Want to See In Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse: Part One
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
This animated superhero sequel has a lot of hype to live up to! For this list, we'll be looking at the characters, plot points and design elements we'd love to see in the sequel to the first cinematic Miles Morales adventure. Our countdown includes Miles Meets A Few Champions, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield & Tom Holland Make Cameos, Miles & Gwen Becoming More Than Friends, and more!

#10: Miles Meets A Few Champions

While Miles Morales already has a pretty impressive group of friends, we'd love to see him expand his circle to include other Marvel heroes. In the comics, he was a part of a group of teenage superheroes known as the Champions. Miles started the team with recognizable heroes like Nova and Ms. Marvel. Over time, the line-up has expanded to include everyone from a young Cyclops to Amadeus Cho’s Hulk. Admittedly, we don’t know if Sony has full access to all of these Marvel mainstays. But it would be great to see the Spider-Verse to open itself up to enough young heroes for Miles to lead an animated champion team on the big screen.

#9: Animation We Haven’t Seen Before

The first Miles Morales movie consistently blew us away with its detailed and beautifully rendered scenes. So, when we saw one of “Into the Spider-verse’s” producers tweet that the sequel would feature “groundbreaking art techniques”, we instantly got excited. During the first “Across the Spider-Verse” trailer, we got just a small hint at the new movie’s visual variety. This tantalizing glimpse made us wonder how many different animation styles might be on display. Since the first film’s post-credits scene went 2D, the creative team clearly isn’t afraid to switch things up on the fly. We’d love to see Miles and his friends rendered in new and exciting ways.

#8: Set-up for a Spider-Verse Movie That’s Led by Heroines

Gwen Stacy A.K.A. Spider-Gwen made a spectacular first impression on her allies and the audience. After her grand entrance, rumors circulated that she’d lead a spin-off movie that features iconic heroines. These reports got even better when we heard that Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman would appear in this adventure as well. Although we’ll hear Issa Rae play the heroine soon, we haven’t heard much about the spin-off. We’d love it if the sequel could dedicate time to setting up a Gwen Stacy Adventure. As an added bonus, the new movie could have her meet heroines like Cindy Moon’s Silk and reunite with Peni Parker. “Across the spider-verse” could easily be the reason why we get to see Gwen work beside amazing heroines.

#7: Miles & Gwen Becoming More Than Friends

From the moment Miles met Gwen in a classroom, we could tell that the two had chemistry. Although the duo shared a few awkward moments, they became pretty close by the end of the movie. Early descriptions of the sequel have stated that the parts of the plot will focus on the nature of Miles and Gwen’s relationship. And although the sequel’s trailer was short, we could still see some sparks flying between them. We know that it would be a little tricky for them to maintain a long distance relationship since they live in different dimensions. But that tiny roadblock won’t stop us from rooting for this adorable Spider-couple.

#6: Takuya Yamashiro’s Spider-Man Gets Time to Shine

In 1978, a Spider-Man series centered around a man named Takuya Yamashiro began airing in Japan. After an alien from the planet Spider gives the main hero some blood, the young human gains a ton of new abilities. Takuya also had access to a giant mech for some reason. Although his zany series only aired 41 episodes decades ago, the character was never forgotten. Takuya appeared in crossover comics before we learned that he’d be joining the “Spider-Verse” sequel. It doesn’t matter whether he’s there to exchange robot maintenance tips with Peni or just to see if anyone else has alien spider-blood. We’re just glad that Takuya’s Spider-Man is getting his chance to step into the Hollywood spotlight.

#5: All the Returning Characters Stay Alive

Watching Miles lose his uncle in the first film was absolutely devastating. Unfortunately, spider people are no strangers to loss. We've lost count of how many times we've seen Peter Parker at a funeral alone. So, it wouldn’t be out of place for Miles to lose one of his many allies or even a parent in the sequel. But we’d love it if everyone made it out of this Spider-Man adventure alive. During Tom Holland’s first solo outing as the webhead, all of his loved ones notably stayed safe and sound. Maybe the Spider-verse sequel can be one of the few webhead tales that spares all the characters the hero is close to.

#4: Spider-Man 2099 Opens Up to Miles

When Miguel O'Hara appeared in a post credit scene, he seemed to be a fun and futuristic version of Spider-Man 2099. However, he didn’t exactly seem to be getting along with Miles in the first “Across the Spider-Verse” trailer. We hope the two can clear up any misunderstandings and talk about teaming up. Miguel O'Hara would make a fascinating and compelling addition to the growing spider squad. In multiple comics and tv shows, this futuristic hero has to deal with lots of dark and heavy issues. He also has an intriguing backstory that involves a holographic assistant, a serious grudge against evil corporations and tons of great twists. We’d hang on every word of Miguel’s backstory…if he stops hitting Miles long enough to tell it.

#3: Miles Fights An Evil Counterpart Named Ultimatum

Although there are plenty of Spider-Man Rogues that can appear in the sequel, one of the most interesting villains they could bring in is named Ultimatum. This antagonist was a version of Miles Morales that befriended Kingpin while they were in jail. But after Ultimatum loses the love of his life, he travels to another dimension to find her again. This villain would definitely have a lot in common with the first movie Kingpin. However, the writers could easily adjust his backstory to give him another reason for traveling. Ultimatum is known for being ruthless while carrying heroic items like a strong shield and a size-changing suit. This evil variant would definitely be thrilling and challenging for Miles to overcome.

#2: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield & Tom Holland Make Cameos

Before rumors began swirling that three live-action Spider-Man actors would appear together in “No Way Home”, there were reports they’d all appear in the first “Spider-Verse”. However, the studio apparently thought it wasn’t the right time to unite this trio. But maybe the sequel can give fans a great team-up that also helps the heroes find closure. Garfield’s Spider-man could get a chance to see a Gwen that’s alive and thriving. While Maguire’s Peter can learn about realities where Peter marries MJ, Holland’s version can hear about worlds that didn’t have a Thanos problem. But whether each Spider-Man has an arc or just a cameo, fans will give “Across the Spider-Verse” a standing ovation if all three were brought together.

#1: Miles Makes His Way Into the MCU

Our first look at this anticipated sequel hinted at a plot where Miles travels between realities. If that’s true, there’s a chance that this young Spider-Man could swing into the MCU. Although we know a version of Miles exists in Disney’s films, we haven’t seen him yet. Letting him appear in a brief live-action scene would make for a historic debut. And Sony’s Venom already appeared to jump into Holland’s home universe in his second film. However, if producers don’t want Miles in live-action yet, Disney’s “What…If?” series is animated and deals with the multiverse. There’s so many ways this groundbreaking Spider-man can get into the MCU. We’ll discover if his journey “Across the Spider-verse” takes him to another world full of heroes in 2022.
