Spider-People Swing In From TV, Comic, Video Game & Maybe Movie Universes
There are so many variants of everyone's favorite arachnid themed hero in the first official trailer that we could spend days just listing them all. However, there were a select few that deserved a little extra attention. Since most wall crawlers choose not to wear capes, it was easy to spot the one that did. The webhead who nearly grabs a fleeing Miles is the Peter Parker who starred in the short lived “Spider-Man Unlimited” animated Series. There’s also at least one variant of a comic accurate Scarlet Spider. And if you pause at just the right time, you’ll spot the Spider-Man from Insomniac’s video games talking to his version of Miles Morales. The fact that all the webheads we mentioned appeared in everything from deep cut shows to popular games opened the door for an exciting rumor to become reality. When the first “Into the Spider-verse” came out, rumors swirled that live action actors would make cameos. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Holland, Maguire or Garfield in the animated smash hit. But we did see them together in “No Way Home”. Since “Multiverse of Madness” proved the live-action Strange can go into an animated universe, it’s very possible the spider-trio could do the same. It would be amazing and mind blowing to see the Sony and Disney universes collide once again. But even if the live-action spider-trio doesn’t appear, we still may be surprised by cameos from variants of the webheads that we didn’t see in the first preview.
Shout Outs to Iconic Moments in Spider-Man History
The first “Spider-Verse” movie was packed with clever callbacks to past Peter Parker stories. We loved seeing the writers poke fun at moments like the exciting train scene and embarrassing dance. Fortunately, a few visual beats in the latest trailer confirmed that the creators weren’t done referencing webhead history. When a taxi flies out of control in the preview, Miles saves civilians from getting hit at the last moment with some fancy webwork. The scene feels like an almost shot-for-shot remake of the time Peter stopped a car in “Spider-Man 2”. Outside of this movie comparison, a Spider-Woman gave us one of the deepest cuts we’ve ever seen in this franchise. During her impressive debut, she appears to defeat a terrifying version of the Vulture with her motorcycle. Spider Woman’s encounter with the villain perfectly mirrors the first time Peter faced off the antagonist in the comics in 1963. After he had trouble taking the flying villain down with his webs and skills alone, he got the edge by inventing a device. Seeing two Spider people separated by 60 years of history both take the Vulture down with tech was mind-blowing. Hopefully, that similarity is only the just one of many historical Spidey deep cuts we’ll get in the 2023 adventure.
Who Peter B. & Miles Are Wearing Is Incredibly Important
Since the trailer cuts between clips of the 2018 and 2023 films, it’s easy to tell Miles has grown up a bit since his last adventure. During that time, both he and Peter B. have made some notable wardrobe changes. Miles found time to make a new suit with his iconic logo intact. When he wasn’t wearing the sleek new costume, we spotted him wearing a Brooklyn basketball jersey with the number 42. In our universe, the first athlete that comes to mind when we think of that number is Jackie Robinson. The baseball player was famously known as a historic Black baseball player who broke barriers by playing in a previously segregated sport. Having his iconic 42 appear on a basketball jersey was a clever way to remind us that Miles lives in an alternate world. Additionally, since the late Chadwick Boseman played Robinson, the number could pay homage to both an iconic Black athlete and a beloved actor. Outside of Miles’ meaningful wardrobe choice, we also noticed that Peter B. has added a baby harness to his outfit. Viewers can also spot him carrying a child in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. Early reports confirm that the kid is Mayday Parker. In several realities, she becomes a powerful and famous heroine who follows in the footsteps of her dad. May’s appearance is both a great callback to Spider-Man comics and a fantastic payoff to a throwaway line in the 2018 movie.
The Mystery Behind Miguel O’Hara’s Motivations
When we were first introduced to Miguel O’Hara at the end of “Into the Spider-Verse”, it appeared that his goal was to recruit wall-crawlers from across the multiverse. Although he wasn’t completely friendly to the first Spider-man he met, he seemed reasonable. But it appears like Miguel will be a lot angrier and more dangerous in “Across the Spider-Verse”. In two separate clips, we saw him pursuing and hurting Miles. It’s entirely possible that Miguel’s dark turn is motivated by family. During the trailer, he looks sad while watching an old video of him playing with a young girl that could be his daughter. Maybe he lost her and Miles stands in the way of getting her back. While this plot would be compelling, it may be too similar to Kingpin’s 2018 plan to save his family by using the multiverse. But a comic storyline may give us a much more ominous and game changing reason why Miguel went bad.
A Ton of Spider-People May Have Been Brainwashed
During the “End of the Spider-Verse”comic storyline, a twisted goddess named Shathra aims to gain a tremendous amount of power by manipulating heroes from across the multiverse. Her abilities allow her to force spider-people to fight against the ones who haven’t fallen under her control. Just a few of the heroes she brainwashed include Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Woman. In the trailer, the latter heroine stands by Miguel right before he attacks Miles. Is this a subtle way of saying that Spider-Woman and the futuristic Spider-man have been forced to work for Shathra? The presence of the evil goddess would also explain why tons of Spider-people are desperate to capture Miles in the trailer. If Shathra is indeed the true big bad of the movie, we are seriously concerned about Gwen Stacy. In the comics, the heroine is corrupted by the goddess. Since Gwen and Miles are so close in the “Spider-Verse” films, seeing them fight would be tragic. But they might have a choice if Shathra turns the heroine into her sinister servant.
