Top 10 Things You Didn't Notice in the New Girl Apartment

The loft was designed to reflect the various characteristics of its inhabitants. Just a look at each of their bedrooms tells you pretty much all you need to know. Take Nick’s room, for example. He might be the glue holding the group together, but he’s also the most disorganized and aimless member of the loft. And his unkempt bedroom is a reflection of just how “everywhere” he often is. It looks like a tornado has gone through it repeatedly thanks to his personal belongings chaotically scattered around the room. Clearly, this is a mess that even neat freak Schmidt can’t clean up.

Schmidt’s douchebag jar is one of the most established running jokes in the series. The others use the jar to keep Schmidt’s inappropriate comments in check. In a similar fashion, during season two, you can see that Schmidt is no longer the only roommate with a habit that needs to be reigned in. Next to his jar, the guys have set up a bowl for Jess labeled “Annoyance Bowl”. Clearly, they needed more time to get used to her quirks. However, either they manage to condition them out of her, or they finally just accept her for who she is because that bowl eventually disappears.

Sitcoms often get called out for putting their protagonists in realistically unaffordable homes. While that’s true in this case too, there’s a bigger issue with the loft’s floor plan that we need to address. If you consider what we’ve seen to be the apartment’s floor plan, Winston and Nick’s rooms are next to each other and open into the hallway. But then, along with the outer shots of the building viewers are privy to, then the location of the windows in both of their bedrooms doesn’t actually make any sense. Maybe that’s how they could afford this place to begin with: its geography is an architectural anomaly!

We barely even noticed the glass grapes until Coach asks if he can keep them when he moves out of the apartment in season four. Given that he’s initially reluctant to take any keepsakes with him whatsoever, we have to wonder what’s so special about this item. But it turns out that he wasn’t the only one eyeing up the fruity ornament either. According to Lamorne Morris, there were a few people, including a hopeful fan, who wanted to hold onto this souvenir once the show wrapped. However, it was the show’s creator Elizabeth Meriwether who ended up keeping the memento.

As we mentioned earlier, the loft is designed to mirror its residents. So it only makes sense that things will change as the characters grow and develop. However, what you probably wouldn’t have noticed is that the front door changes from a double one to a single door after the pilot episode. We don’t actually know why they decided that a single door was more suitable (though it is probably more common) - and of course, none of the characters even mention it. After all, it’s a pretty insignificant detail. Unless you are particularly beady-eyed or have an eidetic memory, there’s no reason you’d notice this minor set change.

Nick fancies himself as quite a competent handyman, although the others might beg to differ. We also know that the group tries to avoid contact with their creepy landlord by all means necessary. It’s a lesson that Jess learns the hard way - but not a mistake she’s bound to make again. Throughout the series, it basically becomes a running joke that there’s a lot in this apartment that needs fixing. And no, not with one of Nick’s more erm, creative solutions. We don’t know how they managed to live in the loft for this long given how many vital appliances and utilities barely pass as functional.

After Nick kisses Jess the night before, tensions run high as the pair try to figure out their feelings for each other. It doesn’t help that they’re attending a matchmaking event to support Cece either. They’re paired up for an activity that involves building a table out of newspaper. Even though they argue throughout the entire task, they still build an incredibly strong table that doesn’t even break when Nick jumps on it. The day only continues to go downhill from there. Yet, the table somehow makes its way back in the loft. Clearly, it meant enough to someone to go back and get it.

By season seven, it’s only Nick and Jess left in the loft so they convert some of the spare rooms into areas that are more suited to their needs. Jess finally gets her crafting room while successful author Nick opts for an office. If you take a closer look at some of the decor, you’ll notice several significant easter eggs referencing past events. This includes plenty of photos of Jess, a poster for Nick’s book “The Pepperwood Chronicles,” and perhaps most adorably, a framed congratulatory note from Jess. Nick isn’t one to talk about his feelings, but this proves just how much he cares about his loved ones.

If you’re a fan of Zooey Deschanel, then you’ll probably know that she shares certain characteristics with Jessica Day. So it should come as no surprise when we tell you that the actress had some of her own opinions when designing the character’s bedroom. Deschanel wanted the room to mirror Jess’ love of teaching as well as reflect some of her other interests. Supposedly, she also called for the inclusion of shadow frames and solid-colored sheets to contrast Jess’ colorful bedding too. She reportedly particularly loved the quirky 3D watermelon artwork on the wall. So much so that once they wrapped, she took it home.

Have you ever noticed that the chairs around the dining table don’t match? Each chair has a totally individual style and one of them is even a rolling office chair. Well, like everything else in this set’s design, that’s no coincidence. The idea is that when you’re just starting out and barely managing to make ends meet, you have to work within your means. This shows that the loftmates accumulated whatever they could find in order to avoid any extra costs when it came to furnishing their apartment. Hey, we’ve all been there. It’s certainly a look that’s well-suited to this group of friends.
