Top 10 Times Anime Heroes Were Corrupted by EVIL
They turned to the dark side, but not by choice! Welcome to WatchMojo and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Anime Heroes Corrupted by EVIL.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the protagonists in anime who, due to the influence of some outside force, found themselves going full on villain. Doesn’t matter if this was a permanent change or a temporary one, just as long as they make that antagonist transition.
#10: Yukio Okumura
“Blue Exorcist” (2011)
It’s ironic that despite representing himself as the good son and who also held a secret resentment towards Rin for being the Spawn on Satan, Yukio was the one that ended up getting possessed by the blue flame. Becoming a pawn that nearly unleashed the full terrible force of Gehana onto the world. If not for Yukio’s conscious breaking through and threatening to shoot himself in the head, he likely would have burned the rest of his fellow exorcists to ashes. Rin’s not looking so bad now, is he?
#9: Juvia Lockser
“Fairy Tail” (2009-19)
We wouldn’t have pegged this gentle, water mage as the type to go full punk rock, revealing outfit included, but that’s apparently what happens when you find yourself overcome with the Rock of Succubus spell. While we won’t deny this new getup looks damn good on Juvia, it does have the unfortunate side effect of her lashing out against her friends, only managing to break out at the last second thanks to Lucy’s intervention. While we doubt she’ll ever go metalhead again, but something tells us she kept the outfit with Gray in mind…
#8: Tatsuya Yuuki
“Gundam Build Fighters” (2013-14)
With the finals of the World Championship match against Sei and Reiji just around the corner, Chairman Mashita suddenly gets cold feet, telling Tatsuya that he has to win by any means necessary. Naturally this doesn’t go down very well with our good old Meijin, and after he refuses the chairman decides to take things into his own hands by forcing him to wear a special headgear, essentially brainwashing him. This results in a completely different Tatsuya to what we’re used to, one that’s cold, cruel and employs dirty tactics such as aiming only for the joints on his opponents gunplay.
#7: Agumon
“Digimon Adventure 02” (2000-01)
Out of all the insidious deeds the Digimon Emperor did during his run as the series antagonist, this one probably hurts the most. Using the Dark Spiral, he was able to turn Tai’s Agumon into his slave, almost dooming the DigiDestineds when he was propelled into his ultimate form of MetalGreymon. Luckily Davis was on hand to save his predecessor’s partner via the power of friendship…which in this instance happened to take the form of a lightning bolt to the dark spiral.
#6: Roll
“MegaMan NT Warrior” (2002-06)
And this is what happens when you decide to open up an obviously dodgy piece of software, it corrupts your entire system – or in this case it coverts your NetNavi into a dominatrix called Empress, now under the control of Count Zap, and oh so willing to delete MegaMan one lash at a time. It’s quite the jarring the transformation, and while it looked like Roll was moments from turning her blue pal into a pile of pixels, Meiru was able to bring her friend back to her senses thanks to a hard reboot!
#5: Jaden Yuki
“Yu-Gi-Oh! GX” (2004-08)
Remember when Mr Get-Your-Game-On ended up becoming the vessel for an ancient tyrant, summoning a ghostly army and even erasing his fellow classmates? Not something you expect to see on an island academy dedicating to teaching about a children’s card game. With the Gentle Darkness under his command, it took the combined efforts of all his friends and rivals to free Jaden of his new kingship. Jeez, the only thing that could be more outrageous was if he agreed to share his body with a demonic entity. Oh wait.
#4: Saber
“Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel” (2017-)
Despite this route being all about Sakura, it’s still heart-breaking to see our favourite king of knights be devoured by the mysterious shadow. And while we presumed this meant she was out for the count, not only was she revealed to be very much alive, but now taken the form of the much more monstrous Saber Alter, serving under the evil Zouken. Her newfound strength with the dark side proved to be so intense that she was even able to slay the mighty Hercules, which is a feat certainly not to be taken lightly.
#3: Aiger Akabane
“Beyblade Burst Turbo” (2018-19)
Hey, beyblading is serious buisness, it’s easy for someone to lose their soul in that kind of environment. As Aiger’s quest to surpass the champion continues, his lust for power pushes him ever closer into villainous territory – with his resonance being the catalyst. By continuously calling upon the power of Achilles, the two begin to merge in each battle displaying a dark aura and stopping at nothing to defeat friend and foe alike. He may have achieved his goal of defeating Valt for the world title, but in the end the cost of his own humanity was too high.
#2: Chibiusa
“Sailor Moon” (1992-97)
Leave it to a creepy old wizard to take advantage of a little girl’s mommy issues in order to corrupt her into a pawn that he can use to destroy his enemies. And apparently age her by a good decade. To no ones surprise, it falls to Usagi to try save her alternate daughter from Wise-Man’s control, which proves to be no small feat since with her new twisted powers this rebellious drama queen proved strong enough to lay waste to any member of the Sailor Senshi who dared step up to her.
#1: Ryuko Matoi
“Kill la Kill” (2013-14)
On the other hand, maybe mothers don’t know best, since in this instance Ragyo was very much willing to re-stitch her own daughter’s mind in order to turn her into a killing machine, one dedicated to making her mama happy. Armed with Junketsu, Ryuko came painfully close to slicing up her own friends while under the illusion that her fantastical fashionista of a mother had imposed, though thankfully that’s nothing compared to one of Mako’s famous monologues!
