Top 10 Times Anthony Mackie Was Hilarious

Top 10 Times Anthony Mackie Was Hilarious
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Jeff Kronenfeld
Turns out The Falcon's got jokes. For this list, we'll be looking at moments when this actor made fans, costars and reporters burst out in laughter. Our countdown includes Roasting Tom Holland, Reading Thirst Tweets with Sebastian Stan, Impersonating a British Accent, and more!

#10: Quinoa & Robert Downey Jr.'s Exclusive Dining Village

During a press conference in London, the Avengers assembled to promote “Captain America: Civil War.” The film features hero-on-hero violence . . . and the event saw comedic shots fired. When the relative size of trailers for different actors came up, Anthony Mackie was revealed to have the biggest. After a joke about his girthy thighs, Mackie proved he’s Team Cap all the way by throwing Robert Downey Jr. under the bus. Mackie described Downey Jr. 's luxury village of four to five trailers, and the man behind the wings explained that lunch invites to Downey Jr.’s village were highly coveted. Mackie even admits his co-star turned him on to the l superfood quinoa, in a bit as funny as it is nutritious.

#9: Showing Class & Sass

At Ace Comic Con in 2018, Mackie clowned hard on Sebastian Stan, Tom Holland and audience members. Before stepping on stage, he was his own hype man, repping his feathered superhero persona as the best in all the Marvelverse. Panel moderator Kevin Smith struggled to keep a straight face, which only got harder when Holland showed up later. Near the event’s end, an audience member joked about Mackie not knowing the meaning of the word “friends.” The Louisiana-born graduate of Juilliard accepted the humorous jab with grace, before countering with a comeback about how important family is during tough times. His unique blend of class and sass made this awkward exchange into a funny and unforgettable Mackie moment.

#8: Reading Thirst Tweets with Sebastian Stan

Is it hot in here or is that just the internet swooning over Falcon and the Winter Soldier? When the fit duo of actors read thirst tweets from fans, the answer was definitely the latter. Of course, Mackie’s mischievous sense of humor was on full display. The duo opted for a simple method of selecting which tweets to read: pick randomly from a huge plastic mug. The first entry was sweet, though things got kinda explicit fast. Mackie took no offense when his backside was likened to a dessert item. He also relished explaining the raunchy tweets to his costar, which makes the dirty messages even funnier. Like a veteran improv-er, Mackie doesn’t shy away from getting uncomfortable if he can make people laugh.

#7: Roasting an Audience Member

The same Ace Comic Con event where Mackie got real with a fan about family also saw him playfully tease a random guy in the audience. This merry ribbing occurred when a young girl showed off a pair of kicks before asking a question. The avian Avenger interrupted by pointing out a man sitting near the mic. The smiling gentleman laughed along as Mackie hypothesized about why the audience member was there. It got really ridiculous when the actor began to narrate the man’s hangry thoughts. These included complaints about being forced to attend the boring event and a critique of its food offerings, which we can’t help but speculate may have been the actor humorously projecting some of his own hangrytude.

#6: Impersonating a British Accent

When a reporter asked to hear the American actor’s take on the Queen’s English, Mackie gleefully accepted the challenge. Predictably, his British accent drew big laughs, but it also ended up bringing out the Marvel star’s more sensitive side. He went a very different direction with his pronunciation while on a panel with the Russo brothers and his superhero BFF Stan. After a fan asked about Captain Britain, Mackie said a few quick lines with an almost cockney inflection. It didn’t take much cajoling to get an encore performance that’s even more over the top. The funniest part was either the facial expression Mackie made while doing the silly voice or when Stan pointed out the ridiculous look afterwards.

#5: Game vs. Endgame

Mackie and Stan didn’t mince words when asked if they thought “Avengers: Endgame” served as a more satisfactory conclusion compared to Season 8 of “Game of Thrones.” Both agreed Marvel nailed it while the other team dropped the ball. Always forthright, Mr. On Your Left roasted the rival franchise over its infamous Starbucks coffee cup snafu. His jabs about the cup of Joe are brutal and entertaining. It’s kind of a low blow from the highflyer, but he’s not wrong. That errant caffeinated beverage did become a symbol for the show’s poorly executed final act. On the other side, the portal scene from Endgame remains a tear-jerking icon for the ages. A truth bomb isn’t any less true because it’s funny, as Mackie proves here.

#4: Roasting Tom Holland

Marvel’s birdman seems to enjoy making fun of the franchise’s resident web-slinger almost as much as we enjoy watching him do it. From mocking Holland’s love of juice to invading the kid’s personal space to claiming he would make a better Spidey, Mackie never misses an opportunity to put the young superstar on blast. We think all the jokes are really Mackie’s way of expressing affection while entertaining fans. When he calls the MCU’s Peter Parker annoying or compares the lad to a yappy dog, he’s just showing the diminutive Brit his love. Stan often joins in on the hazing, unleashing an unstoppable barrage of witty barbs. Mackie’s mockery of his frenemy Holland represents a comedic well that will seemingly never run dry.

#3: His "Sweet Spot"

Everyone has limits, even heroes. Mackie revealed one of his on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in 2016. The celeb explained that overeager fans occasionally get very up close and personal. Though Mackie is usually happy to stop for a selfie, sometimes folks lean in too close to whisper in his ear and touch his lower back. Mackie calls this invasion of privacy a violation of his “sweet spot,” and we concur. Chris Evans seconded this sentiment when his winged co-star tried to demonstrate on the now-retired Captain America. The show’s host volunteered to assist Mackie in a demonstration. Seeing what the actor described drives home the cringe factor of it in a way that still manages to make us laugh.

#2: His Bromance with Sebastian Stan

Combine the jocular Mackie with the always chill Stan and what do you get? The MCU’s greatest platonic love affair, even if the guys sometimes pretend they aren’t really friends. The pair’s new show exhibits the full range of their onscreen chemistry, but the internet first fell in love with the duo years earlier. Viral videos of them mancrushing on each other during MCU press tours racked up big views. As it turned out, they were perfect foils. Mackie always tried to get his stoic counterpart to break... and usually succeeded. Likewise, these antics also made fans howl with laughter. From thumb wrestling to exchanging goofy gifts, the brotherly love shared by Marvel’s funniest odd couple is a superpower we can all enjoy.

#1: Responding to Falcon's Gear Being Referred to as a "Bird Suit"

Mackie proved he was the MCU’s roastmaster extraordinaire with this rapidfire takedown of Team Ironman. However, before getting to Falcon’s turkey shoot, we have to talk about the actor’s response to his costume’s description as a “bird suit.” The normally bubbly hero flashed his game face and dared the questioner to repeat himself. The audience was already in stitches, but Mackie was just getting started. He went on to compare Ironman to a Coke can, Vision to a magic marker, War Machine to a trash receptacle and Black Panther to car tires. With each new freestyle diss, the audience audibly gasped before roaring in laughter. Only Scarjo escaped Mackie’s flamethrower, proving Mac is a gentleman as well as a comedian.
