Top 10 Times WatchMojo Got It WRONG in 2022

Top 10 Times WatchMojo Got It WRONG in 2022
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Nick Spake
Hopefully, we can redeem ourselves now. For this list, we'll be looking at factual errors, questionable ranks, and tone-deaf instances from the past year that had viewers saying, “Wow, congratulations, WatchMojo. First you run out of ideas, now you run out of all credibility!” Our countdown includes Top 10 Worst CGI Monsters of All Time, 20 Racist Disney Movie Moments That You Forgot About, Top 10 Times South Park Was Censored, and more!

#10: Top 10 Worst CGI Monsters of All Time

It’s simply scarier when something practical is chasing the humans. We cited Mama as one of the most laughable monsters brought to life through CGI. As MrsElfman pointed out in the comments, though, Mama wasn’t entirely CG. Spanish actor Javier Botet has racked up a long list of creature credits. As the titular Mama, Botet would drape himself in a costume and makeup. However, CG was utilized for certain features of the character, most notably the hair. This is where the film drops the ball, arguably still meeting the list’s criteria, but we at least should’ve highlighted Botet’s physical talents. It also might’ve been unfair to say that all the “Van Helsing” creatures looked bad, as those werewolves are actually kind of cool.

#9: Top 10 Normal Social Media Posts with Disturbing Backstories

They seem innocent on the surface, but behind these social media posts are stories of murder, fatal accidents, and other shocking revelations. Given the list’s dire subject matter, we tried extra hard to set an appropriate tone through the writing and narration. While we think those aspects came off well, one element didn’t complement the grim nature of this video: the music. Several commenters noted that the upbeat music playing in the background completely contrasted with the graphic descriptions. It’s like if you replaced John Carpenter’s “Halloween” theme with “Monster Mash.” The music just doesn’t reflect what’s being depicted on screen. We’re not saying that this video needed an ultra-creepy theme, but there were far more fitting music selections.

#8: Top 10 Worst Horror Movie Plot Twists

When you produce so many videos, keeping track of every rank is easier said than done. That’s still no excuse for a lack of coherence. On this list, we criticized the twist in “High Tension,” calling it familiar, cheap, and inconsistent. Apparently not as inconsistent as WatchMojo. In 2020, we made a list of the Top 20 Horror Movie Plot Twists, and guess what was at #18? Even in that video, though, we say that it’s a “shame” the protagonist is taken in this direction. The twist is shocking and memorable, but in retrospect, we’re not sure that it’s a good twist. Either way, it’s a divisive twist, so maybe it’s fitting that we represented it on both lists. Or maybe we’re just making excuses.

#7: Top 5 Exciting Details in the Second Jurassic World Dominion Trailer

Four years ago, we released a list of The Top 10 Scientific Inaccuracies in Jurassic Park. So, we’re sort of dinosaur experts around here. Eh, perhaps we spoke too soon, as this “Jurassic World Dominion” video had a pretty boneheaded blunder. Breaking down the trailer, we say that the Carnotaurus eats a man on his scooter. While a Carnotaurus does roar at the rider, an Allosaurus actually sank its teeth into him. These theropod dinosaurs look a bit similar, but we should’ve been able to tell the difference. The moment goes by so quickly that we just didn’t notice, although several of our followers did. We suppose that makes us John Hammond and you guys Ian Malcolm. How does it feel always being right?

#6: 20 Racist Disney Movie Moments That You Forgot About

Whenever we make a video like this, there’s bound to be an array of conflicting opinions. There are certain moments from Disney movies that don’t hold up so well decades later, but some of these entries might’ve been a stretch as our commenters put it. Many pointed to the inclusion of “Savages,” which explores how prejudice can be a two-way street. We also could’ve mentioned that Disney realized it would’ve been problematic to cast an African-American as King Louie, hence why Italian-American Louis Prima got the role. Some accused this video of virtue signaling while others said that these moments should be viewed in the context of when they came out. In any case, there’s always room for growth, which applies to Disney and us.

#5: Top 10 Worst Resident Evil Movies and Shows

Whenever an anticipated movie or show comes out, we like to make a video connected to it. With a list like this, though, WatchMojo royally jumped the gun. We, like every other fan, wanted so badly for Netflix’s “Resident Evil” show to deliver. Not only was it a massive letdown, but it probably could’ve topped this list had we waited. We essentially tempted fate by writing this list before getting a chance to watch the new series, which got canceled after one season. Without the Netflix show’s presence, the video feels dated on arrival. Maybe we’ll correct this if we ever do the Top 20 Worst Resident Evil Adaptations, although that would mean Hollywood needs to keep screwing things up. Either way, we lose.

#4: Top 10 Red Carpet Moments Ruined By Morons

With virtually every WatchMojo list, people are bound to debate the rank. It’s usually just a matter of opinion with neither side being right or wrong. In this case, our #2 entry really should’ve been higher. The video’s thumbnail showcases the infamous incident at the 2006 Golden Globes when Isaac Mizrahi got uncomfortably handsy with Scarlett Johanson. What could possibly top this beyond inappropriate display? Nancy O’Dell making assumptions about who Taylor Swift would be going home with! Although both journalists acted unprofessionally, Mizrahi’s actions were clearly more moronic. As user JustTigg wrote, “Hold on, did yall SERIOUSLY ranked hurt feelings higher than sexual harassment? Y'all actually did that?” We did, and we suppose that makes us morons.

#3: 10 Worst Crashes In F1 History

We aspired to be as sensitive as possible with this video, thoroughly researching the tragic subject matter, providing a warning, and excluding background music. We almost made it to the finish line before crashing with a ridiculous question: “Did you enjoy this video?” Dr Nisu Unn responded, “No, those were horrible moments.” We’ll often close out our videos with a generic line like that. Most of the time, it’s appropriate since we want our subscribers to enjoy our content. In a video dealing with horrific crashes, however, the intent was to inform rather than provide enjoyment. We should’ve thought twice before using that outro, which would’ve been better suited for something like Top 10 Happy Little Bob Ross Accidents. We should make that list someday.

#2: Top 10 Times South Park Was Censored

Ironically, this video about censorship had to be censored. The list inevitably worked up to the Muhammad episodes of “South Park.” In most instances, the Comedy Central series has hidden the Muslim prophet behind a black bar. In the episode “Super Best Friends,” however, Muhammad appeared completely uncensored. That episode has since been pulled from circulation along with others depicting Muhammad, but nothing is ever gone for good on the internet. We managed to track the episode down and originally closed this video with a clip of the uncensored Muhammad. It wasn’t until after publishing that we realized something. If “South Park” can’t show the prophet, we definitely can’t! We went back and edited the video, hence why it ends on an abrupt, awkward note.

#1: Top 10 Black Panther Wakanda Forever Rumors Explained

There are numerous factors that go into making a WatchMojo video. Fact-checking every script, collecting proper visual aids, making sure the tone is just right, etc. The easiest part of any video is simply typing in the title. We couldn’t even do that right with this video. Instead of “Black Panther,” we accidentally wrote, “Blank Panther.” We corrected this error eventually, but by that point, people had already immortalized our mistakes in the comments. Some users even took screenshots of the original title so we’d never be able to deny it. Few things are forever, but two are: 1) Wakanda and 2) WatchMojo getting it wrong. Stay tuned for our next video about “Art-Man and the Warp: Quantum Leap.”
