Top 10 Unanswered Questions in Avengers Endgame

One of the questions most often heard while exiting the theater after Endgame centered on the teenage boy seen standing at Tony’s funeral. We don’t blame you for not recognizing him; the adorable little Ty Simpkins, who played Harley in “Iron Man 3” has done a whole lot of growing up since his appearance in the 2013 film. It’s very touching that Harley was invited to this small, intimate ceremony but it also has us wondering what that might mean for his future in the MCU. Back in 2013, rumors circulated that he might become Nova. Could that still hold true? His presence might just be a nice throwback to the time he spent with Tony, but we’re hoping that it’s a sign of something more.

To say that Steve Rogers and Johann Schmidt have bad blood is an understatement of interplanetary proportions. The mortal enemies’ last encounter was aboard Red Skull’s doomed airship, and the battle ended with Cap in the ice and the uber-nazi disappearing through a portal created by the Tesseract. Red Skull’s fate remained a mystery for years until the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” revealed that he had wound up on Vormir, where, thoroughly changed, he is cursed to serve as the guide to the Soul Stone. So when Cap goes on his trip to return the stones, he naturally must have reunited with his old nemesis. But what happened there? Did they duke it out? Or, worlds away from Earth, was it a peaceful exchange? Perhaps a reflection on how much has changed since the two last saw each other.

Honestly… we’d almost rather NOT think about this question. When he was sent with Thor to extract the Aether from Jane, Rocke was equipped with a rather oversized, terrifying-looking syringe. While we can imagine Rocket jabbing Jane Foster with that needle without a second thought, Cap having to do the opposite task is a bit harder to wrap our minds around. Steve Rogers is a real “do no evil” type of character. Him sneaking into Jane’s room while she sleeps to inject her with the dangerous substance feels just… wrong. How exactly Cap went about it, we may never know.

We know… this list has been a little Cap-centric. But when you disappear through the quantum realm to revisit numerous locations and then travel into the past to live out the rest of your life (and do it all off-screen), well, that leaves viewers with a lot of questions! At the end of the film, we get to see Steve Rogers reunited with his one true love, Peggy Carter. As Cap tells Sam, following Tony’s advice, he finally went and got himself a life - specifically the one with Peggy that he’d previously lost. But what did those decades look like? Did Cap continue to fight when the world found itself in peril, or did he lead the quiet life?

The screenwriters behind “Avengers: Endgame” outlined their rules of time travel with Professor Hulk serving as the mouthpiece. Though he did a bang-up job, we’d be lying if we said it left us feeling 100% clear on the matter - especially considering the way it was complicated by Cap’s actions at the end of the film. Hulk throws the “Back to the Future” model out the window, explaining that (at least as far as the MCU is concerned), that’s complete nonsense. But while the Avengers can’t change their own past or present using time travel, their actions have seemingly caused deviations in the narrative in the alternate timelines they revisited. And we’re really curious as to what happened to the realities in which they meddled. Though Spider-Man: Far From Home appears to be introducing the Multiverse to the MCU, so hopefully everything gets cleared up by then.

The exchange between an elderly Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson, just moments after he saw his friend enter the Quantum Realm, was extremely touching. Steve gave Sam his shield and though he didn’t need to say it, he was essentially passing the mantle of Captain America to the Falcon. Sam is a great Avenger, but a super soldier, he is not. And while the moment was powerful, it left many wondering how exactly Sam is supposed to fill those sizable shoes. Sam, like Hawkeye and Black Widow, is in peak physical condition, but he relies on skill and technological augmentations to even the playing field. Will the new torch-bearer blend both identities? Will someone find a way to replicate the super soldier serum? Only time will tell.

Many people speculated that Gamora could somehow be brought back to life. The most popular version of this theory was that the soul of those who died to acquire the Soul Stone continued to exist within the stone itself. Sadly, it would seem that that is not the case. And even if it were, with Thanos having destroyed that reality’s soul stone, the Gamora that fell in love with Peter Quill is seemingly gone for good. But what about the other Gamora? Since she didn’t leave with the Guardians, she’s either hanging around the earth, or she was carried back to her own time by Tony’s snap. Either way, we can only assume that Quill and company are going to find a way back to her.

Trickster god and master of deception that he is, Loki seemingly met his death for real when he faced off against Thanos in Infinity War. Like with Gamora however, time travel introduced an alternate version of the character, seemingly with a different fate. Due to the meddling of the time-traveling Avengers, this version of Loki was able to escape with the Tesseract at the end of the 2012 film. But to where? That’s anyone’s guess. With this timeline’s version of the Avengers (not to mention the Asgardians) surely keen to recapture him, we imagine that Loki will probably go on the run, jumping around various realities, getting up to mischief wherever he goes. Hopefully, his Disney+ series will provide answers.

As the Ancient One explains to Banner when he goes to collect the Time Stone, the Infinity Stones are incredibly important to the balance of the universe and reality from which they originate. This is why they’re so hesitant to hand the stone over to Professor Hulk. While Hulk’s assurances put the Ancient One’s mind at ease, we’re still a little concerned about the future of Hulk’s reality, based on the Ancient One’s warnings. Cap returned the various Infinity stones to their timelines of origin, meaning that at the end of Endgame, our core timeline is still without Infinity Stones because Thanos destroyed them all before getting his head chopped off. What sort of dark consequences might this have in the future? We’re likely to find out sooner rather than later!

From quite early in the MCU, the threat of Thanos loomed quite large. But with the Mad Titan having been soundly defeated, it’s safe to say that his time in the MCU has come to an end. Marvel films, with few exceptions, have always ended with a post-credit scene teasing the future of the franchise. Like many others, we assumed that Endgame would include a teaser for the next big bad villain. Instead, however, all we got was a banging sound, possibly a reference to Tony Stark creating the Mark 1 suit. So, without any clear answer, who might replace Thanos as the major villain? A more sinister generation of Skrulls? Annihilus? Galactus? We’ll just have to wait and see!
