Top 10 Video Game Characters based on Bruce Lee

Spoiler alert, you’re going to see a lot of fighting game characters on this list, but given that Lee’s was a martial artis legend that shouldn’t really be a surprise. This Chinese/South Korean Kung Fu movie star, just like Lee himself, has fast powerful kicks with high pitch shouts, and topped off with a flaming Dragon Kick. Not a bad start.

One of the many possible selectable characters at the start of this Action/RPG epic, Ming’s personality and character may be up for the player to decide, but his physique and fighting style leave little else to the imagination. If they were to ever make a movie out of Jade Empire, they certainly wouldn’t be able to cast their #1 choice for Ming.

It seems odd that a character modeled after a martial artist who was famous for his kicks would taking part in a boxing tournament. But don’t let your guard down, Dragon Chen will actually break the rules of Boxing and launch flying kicks at you, Kicks that are so powerful they can knock you out in one hit.

Pick up the Dragon Fist outfit for this guy and the resemblance is uncanny, even though Sin stands out quite a bit from the rest of the entries on this list due to the fact that he’s blind. Never the less with, his flying kick demonstrates that he’s got the rest of his senses perfectly tuned, and his calm demeanor fits nicely with his philosophy.

Lee’s trademark weapon the nunchaku’s are the main symbol of Hon Fu’s character. While this character draws inspiration from both Lee and Jackie Chan, the fact that this guys sets his nunchaku’s on fire to wipe out his opponent makes us wish we saw the Dragon himself do something like that.

Alright alright, so this one’s a bit of a stretch considering its not a human character. Still he is named after the famous star, and his opposite is named HitmonCHAN after Jackie Chan. We’ll give you a minute to pick up the piece of your blown mind. Plus the Pokedex refers to him as the “kicking master.” He defiantly has the credentials to take on the role. If only he was a Dragon type Pokemon, That would have been a perfect representation.

He may not look like Lee, but he defiantly has his fighting style. This Japanese pirate who calls himself “The Dandy of the South Seas” wields a specially made bladed nunchaku’s and a rather full of himself attitude. As such, the guy could definitely use a few wisdom lessons from the man himself if he’s going to copy his style.

Fei Long is Capcom’s tribute character to the martial arts legend, even going so far referencing him and his son in the ending. The Hong Kong movie star who’s name means “Flying Dragon” in Mandarin, is an uncanny reproduction of the deceased star, right down to the high pitched voice. Fun fact, in the Street Fighter II Animated Movie he’s voiced by Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston.

Liu Kang’s resemblance to the legend was more incidental, as according to co-creator John Tobias he was originally supposed to be portrayed as a Buddhist Monk, but the actor Ho Sung Pak who played Kang refused to shave his head. Still we’re not complaining, as what we got was a character who can not only fly further than Bruce Lee, but also one upped his Dragon persona … by literally turning into a Dragon.

Before we get to the top spot, lets have a look at some honorable mentions

Law takes the top spot because not only because his fighting style almost is almost identical to Lee’s, but in the 4th game onwards he can be chosen with the same yellow jumpsuit that Lee wore in his final film Game of Death. If that wasn’t enough of a tribute for you, his son Forest Law is a straight up homage to Brandon Lee, and to see the 2 fighting together in the Tag Tournament series is a sight to behold.
