#10: Lillet Blan
“GrimGrimoire” (2007)
Nobody said witches had to be evil, in fact some just want to graduate. After being admitted to the Tower of Silver Star, a prestigious magic school, all the studious Lillet wants to do is get good grades and become a magician to make a better life for her family. Unfortunately magic turns out to be a bit more dangerous than your average subject, as she awakens on her fifth day to find everyone in her school dead. Able to travel four days into the past, this tirelessly determined witch gets an A grade from us for fighting against time itself to save her friends and faculty!
#9: Ashley
“WarioWare" series (2004-)
When you traditionally think of a witch, gothic and macabre images come to mind, not a rather emotionless teenager living in a mansion with a cute little red imp for a sidekick. That’s not to say Ashley isn’t entertaining, and she does embody the classic witch traits of brewing portions in cauldrons, threatening people and having one hell of a catchy theme song! Might be worth being turned into a frog just to hear that tune!
#8: Tharja
“Fire Emblem: Awakening” (2013)
Speaking of traditional witches, say hello to Tharja, a Dark Mage who is recruited to join the player character, known as the Avatar, and their army in order to win against the hostile nation of Plegia. With her mastery of casting hexes, reading fortunes and communicating with the dead, she is a valued member you’d want as your support. There is a catch though, she does come with some…stalker-ish tendencies. Whether you pursue her as a romance or not, be wary as she’s more than likely watching you from the shadows.
#7: Adria
“Diablo" series (1996-)
Cunning and beautiful, you would do best to avoid this witch at all cost before you get roped into her plans. Largely independent, Adria travelled through life seeking power and becoming a key source of magical trade for travellers. While she may have been the head of a collective of witches for a while, her darkest contribution to the world was birthing the daughter of the Lord of Terror himself, Diablo. And if you still aren’t swayed about staying away, she’s not exactly looking her best these days since she turned herself into a less than desirable Blood Demon!
#6: The Crones of Crookback Bog
“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” (2015)
On paper, these witches might seem pretty stereotypical. Three old ladies that live in a bog and eat kids: big deal, aimright? Well, you might change your mind after you get a look at em’. Easily earning the honorary award for ugliest video witches of all time, these three crones will haunt your nightmares for years – and to think you only ever 1 of their actual faces. I guess it’s best not to wonder what’s in the bag or whose legs are dangling out from under that dress… And uh, pro tip, even if they do clean up real nice in the final act – it’s best not to eat anything they try to serve you.
#5: Lulu
“Final Fantasy X” (2001)
Guys, put your tongues back into your mouth, otherwise she might burn them off. A traditional Black Mage brought up under teachings of Yevon and one of the guardians of the High Summoner, Lulu serves as an instrumental character in helping protagonist Tidus in exploring Spira all the while protecting Yuna. She may have a short fuse and not smile very often, but there’s no doubt when you’re dealing with monsters like Sin, you want someone like her at your side.
#4: Koume and Kotake
“The Legend of Zelda" series (1987-)
Appearing throughout the series in different variations, these creepy twins are best known in their Ocarina of Time form are the surrogate mothers of the King of Evil himself, Ganandorf. That takes a special kind of crazy. While the two do provide some good comic relief when it comes to arguing about their age, they’re still witches which means their still dangerous. While one attacks with flame, the other attacks with frost, so be sure to keep your guard up.
#3: Morrigan
“Dragon Age" series (2009-)
Apostate, Shapeshifter, Witch of the Wilds, she has many names, but we’ll always know her as one of the best characters to ever step out of the Dragon Age franchise. A companion from the first game, Morrigan is as sharp-tongued as she is emotionally broken. During her journeys with the Grey Warden she not only serves as a deeply-complex romance option but offers players choices that will shape the rest of the Dragon Age universe. A standout character who is both witty, stubborn, beautiful and ultimately tragic.
#2: Gruntilda Winkybunion
“Banjo-Kazooie" series (1998-)
You can’t get much more traditional than this. Green skin, broomstick, magic spells and constantly speaking in rhyme, Gruntilda is as iconic as she is hilarious! She serves as the archenemy of series protagonists Banjo and Kazooie, as she desperately tries to make herself more beautiful by stealing the looks of Banjo’s younger sister. Needless to say the bear and bird aren’t going to take this lying down, leading to battle which shows that Grunty doesn’t just have the look down, she has power in spades!
Before our number one pick casts a spell on us, here are a few honourable mentions.
Lulu
“League of Legends” (2009)
The Sorceress
“Dragon’s Crown” (2013)
Chaos Witch Quelaag
“Dark Souls”(2011)
The Pumpkin Witch
“MediEvil” (1998)
#1: Bayonetta
“Bayonetta" series (2010-)
The rest of the ladies on our list may have been pretty awesome, but they weren’t quite “take on the hordes of both Heaven and Hell” awesome! An Umbra Witch with a gun for each limb and a wisecrack for every enemy, there’s no denying Bayonetta is everything a witch should be – taboo, powerful and oh so much fun to watch in action. Whether she’s fighting Paradiso to get her memories back, or battling the Inferno to save a friend, our number one witch will do in style! Who else do you know that’s punched God in the face?
