Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we countdown our picks for the Top 10 Video Games That Ruin Friendships. For this list, we’re looking at Video Games which have a multiplayer component that inspires stiff competition that often results in tension. Although entire genres have a tendency to do this, we’re looking for specific games, or their series. Ready? Fight!

#10: “FIFA” series (1993-)

A long running franchise based around the most popular sport in the world can only inspire friendly competition, right? Wrong! Tensions run ultra high as online series and offline multiplayer matches push players to their limits, and the will to win quickly morphs into desperation. Before long, sharp words are thrown and insults rain down. Don’t believe us, take a look at some of KSI’s videos... Uniting players from around the world my ass!

#9: “Super Smash Bros.” series (1999-)

Also in:

The Complete History of Super Smash Bros.

Combining players from across Nintendo’s canon of titles created a brilliant and diverse fighting game, that was accessible and fun. With accessibility though, a myriad of players find themselves flocking to this party game, and with the latest iterations having 8 players on screen things can get... hectic. Just wait for that one unlucky cheap shot, or that completely unfair item grab, and suddenly that friendly get together you planned with your buds is a rage filled disaster.

#8: “World of Warcraft” (2004)

Also in:

Top 10: World War II Video Games

One of the most popular video games of all time, World of Warcraft is all about the grind and has no room for mercy. As players struggle to level up, stealing loot and turning on players can quickly piss off your online comrades. Not to mention the trolls... so many trolls. Also, given that the game is slightly less addictive than methamphetamines, you can pretty much flush your social life down the toilet. Just check out these withdrawal systems.

#7: “Contra” (1987)

Like many games in the days of the NES, co-op changed the way we play games together, as seen in Contra. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned. Inviting another player onto the screen with you meant that the two of you had to compete to kill more enemies to get more lives and keep up with eachother, lest one of you get left behind and killed by default. Does giving half your control of the game mean giving up half the fun? We’ll let you decide.

#6: “Left 4 Dead” series (2008-09)

Also in:

10 MISTAKES Video Game Developers Intentionally LEFT IN

Designed to be played online with a group of friends and randomly assigned players, or locally via split screen, this game requires the same key to survival that a real zombie apocalypse would: cooperation. Failing that, everything falls apart. If one member of the team isn’t pulling their weight, or can’t keep up, and it drags the whole team down. Alas, many a time, the words “Cover me” have echoed through headsets, only to fall on deaf ears.

#5: “Call of Duty” series (2003-)

Also in:

Top 10 Call of Duty Games

First person shooters are a hot bead for hot tempers and short fuses, as seen from classics such as Goldeneye 007 to the Halo series, but nothing proved this better than the Call of Duty. Becoming one of the most popular shooters of all time, through it’s accessibility and quick time to kills, Call of Duty is criticized as for many the said accessibility translates to a lack of skill required for play. Camping, C4 throws, trickshots, and those damn mines all force players to hate their opponents. Plus access to Killstreaks to whomever’s doing better will make the match very one sided. Trust us, war is not meant to be played with your friends.

#4: “Worms” series (1995-)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Destructive Weapons In Worms Games

This turn-based combat game allowed players to take control of worms that use firearms 6 times their bodyweight to attack their friends team. The variety of weapons create a slew of opportunities to screw over your friends, but even worse is when the wind is not in your favor over multiple turns. This can only mean one of two things: either the developers didn’t know such a simple game could create such hostility among friends, or they did and released it anyway. Either way, they created a monster.

#3: “Mario Kart” series (1992-)

Also in:

Why Mario Kart Leaves Other Racing Games in the Dust

It goes without saying, the Mario Kart series is a big part of all of our childhoods, be it the SNES version, the N64 version, or a later iteration. And because of that, we all know the hatred we’ve felt for the friend who kicked our ass at it. Everything was going so well, until they used one of their stupid items or jumped the track to get ahead. Hell hath no fury like a player scorned by a blue shell right before the finish line.

#2: “Battletoads” (1991)

As one of the original and most popular of the scroller beat’em ups, this game proudly displays the same slights as all who followed. At the time of release the game was already brutally difficult, and more often than not, players found themselves hitting each other instead of the enemy. Its very frustrating when you’re struggling to hold onto your health, and you’re buddy walks up and smacks you in the face, but things will hit boiling point when you both realize that if one player hits game over, they both have to start the stage again. Before we move on to our top pick here are a few honorable mentions. “StarCraft” series (1998-) “FarmVille” (2009) “Mortal Kombat” series (1992-) “New Super Mario Bros Wii” (2006)

#1: “Mario Party” series (1998-)

Also in:

Top 10 WORST Mario Party Mini-Games

Designed to mimic boardgames, this long running series captures the same rage felt by hardcore monopoly players. We honestly can’t remember how many times we’ve spent so many turns to get the star, only for a competitor to steel it out from us with Boo! Or had all our coins taken by Bowser! And don’t even get us started on those hell-forged minigames! Mario Party not only allows you to screw over your friends, it promotes and facilitates it. This is the perfect game to play at parties... if you don’t ever want to see any of your guests again. Did you agree with our list? What games have you not talking to your friends anymore?
