#10: SackBoy
“LittleBigPlanet” series (2011-)
A game almost entirely based around creating and sharing user-generated platforming universes, it makes sense that LittleBigPlanet would provide a bevy of options to customize and modify your main avatar, especially in terms of decorations and clothing. There hundreds of different outfit combinations and skins to mix and match for your sackboy or girl, be it as random as a crocodile outfit or your own mini Ezio Auditore, there’s no shortage of adorable outfits you can make this plushy toy wear.
#9: Hero of Oakvale
“Fable” (2004)
As a small boy, your village is pillaged by a group of bandits - what follows is an epic quest of redemption and vengeance. What makes “Fable’s” customization stand out is the fact that you follow your character’s timeline – from child, all the way to grizzled old warrior. As you stray further down the path of either good or evil, your Hero will begin to exhibit physical traits reflecting their alignment. So, unless you want a pair of devil horns on your head, stop murdering all of those helpless villagers!
#8: The Grey Warden
“Dragon Age: Origins” (2009)
The coolest thing about “Dragon Age’s” customization is the ability to choose ‘origins,’ which heavily determine the protagonists’ social class and station in life. Beyond their backgrounds, there are a wide variety of classes, skills, races and physical traits to choose from as you embark on a sweeping high fantasy quest to destroy the archdemon and restore peace to your land. Just be sure not to make yourself too ugly, unless you want to experience some really awkward sex scenes later in the game.
#7: Create a Wrestler
“WWE” series (2000- )
Wrestling games have become almost synonymous with character creation – I mean, what wrestling fan wouldn’t want to throw themselves into a storyline with legends like the Undertaker or Shawn Michaels? Dating as far back as Wrestlemania 2000 on the N64 and Smackdown 2 on the PS1, the ability to make your own energetic superstars have been a staple of the WWE games ever since – from you character’s personal appearance, to their entrance theme to their devastating finishing maneuver.
#6: Create a Fighter
“Soul Calibur V” (2012)
Starting with “Soul Calibur 5” players were finally able to modify and create their own fighter with one of the more robust creation suites ever seen in a video game, period. Many of the options are totally ridiculous, enough that you could create your Cartoon show heroes in dream scenarios, like say having Misty from Pokemon literally smash that smirk of Maxi’s face.– if you’ve ever wanted to fight as a giant elephant man wearing a purple crushed velvet suit using nunchucks, well, then “Soul Calibur 5” is your game!
#5: The Protagonist
“Saint’s Row” series (2006-13)
When “Saint’s Row” was released, it was a “Grand Theft Auto” rip-off. It was only when “Saint’s Row” decided to embrace a cartoonishly insane aesthetic that the series took off. “Saint’s Row” offers some of the most ludicrous character customizations ever, such as ‘50s Housewife Hair, tons of make-up options, Top Hats, and basically anything imaginable. If you want to look like a weirdo, you can do that, but Saint’s Row also offers some of the most bad-ass character. And from Saints Row 2 onwards you an even pick an memorable voice pack for some great moments.
#4: Oogie
“Spore” (2008)
When “Spore” was announced, it seemed like a technical impossibility; a game where you could conceive an alien species, then watch it develop from single-cell organism all the way to sentient, space-travelling creature! It seemed too good to be true, and … well it was. Spore couldn’t live up to its lofty promises, but its still good some very interesting elements. Offering a pretty insane species creation system- whether you want to create a carnivorous mass of pink goo, or a multi jointed limbed Cyclops with arms like tree trunks, you can do it with Spore.
#3: Commander Shepard
“Mass Effect” series (2007- )
Is there anything more bad-ass than commanding a rag-tag team of space mercenaries and soldiers in a race against time to save the universe from impending doom? Well set yourself in the boots of Commander Shepard and you can live out your favourite sci-fi fantasies … in more ways that one. With the options of facial design, choice of backstory, choices of dialogue throughout the game, and the ability to transfer your character across all 3 games, Mass Effect certainly gave you many opportunities to make the experience your own.
#2: Various Adventurers
“The Elder Scrolls” series (1994-2014)
Sure you may think that we'd go with the Lone Wanderer of Fallout 3, but Bethesda's other series nudges ahead! Though most of “The Elder Scrolls” series takes place in first person, there are nonetheless a wide variety of options in terms of race, physical characteristics, as well as some of the most advanced skill and job trees available, especially in the earlier titles. You can be a lizard-like Argonian mystic with giant horns, or perhaps a brutal, huge-bearded Nordic warrior with imposing tribal tattoos? Sometimes, you have to just throw that camera into third-person perspective, take your helmet off, and take a stroll through town so you can admire your handiwork.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
The Arisen
“Dragon’s Dogma” (2012)
Multiplayer Character
“Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” (2014)
Guardian
“Destiny” (2014)
The New Kid
“South Park: The Stick of Truth” (2014)
Mii’s
“Super Smash Brothers WiiU” (2014) & “Tomodachi Life” (2014
#1: Sims
“The Sims” series (2000-)
Why stop at making just one character for your game when you can make an entire household of them? As expansion packs become available (and they always do), the breadth of things your Sim can do increase – the variety of outfits, jobs and physical traits your Sims can have is seemingly limitless. Sure they may have had their dialogue written by a drunken gorilla randomly pressing keys on a speak ‘n spell, but damned if they don’t like pretty unique.
