Top 10 WatchMojo Top 10s of 2015

2015 was the year we decided that sex sells. So we gave you: Top 10 Movie Oral Sex Scenes, Top 10 Outrageous Sex-Deaths in Movies, Top 10 Songs You Didn’t Know Were About Sex, the Top 10 Sexiest Women Per Decade series, Top 5 Facts on Sexual Positions, Top 10 Booty Songs and many more. But the WatchMojo video that got the most views in 2015? Another Top 10 Hilarious Movie Sex Scenes, with over 19 million. Of course, sex doesn’t always sell: Top 10 Needlessly Sexualized Female Movie Characters has an almost even like-to-dislike ratio, with comments calling us out for being sexist ourselves! Womp-womp.

We get it: some of you think we’re running out of ideas. It’s almost become a meme! But that’ll never happen. That said, publishing Top 10 Fictional Movie and TV Owls didn’t help our case much… To be fair, we published Top 10s about a lot of pop culture cuddlies, like Top 10 Movie and TV Cats, Dogs, etc. But once you get past Harry Potter’s pet Hedwig, well, it’s slim pickings in the owl department. Nonetheless, in eight months “Owls” is about to crack 100,000 views. And, while we may’ve also done the eye-roll-inducing Top 10 Iconic Cheeses (which did crack 100,000 views, fwiw), we’ve not yet done Top 10 Staircases in Movies – though we may do top 10 lethal fights on staircases, to get the last laugh. We’re equal opportunity offenders when it comes to the topics we cover. For those 200K-and-change of you who care, we released Top 10 Nicki Minaj Songs, divided Mojoholics Assuming this meant Mojoholics ain’t Nicki fans, she appeared on our Top 10 Worst Singers list. Well, the ALL-CAPS brigade was out in full force when that came out – mostly to support Britney, Lana del Rey and Rebecca Black, mind you. “Worst Singers” actually ended up being our most commented video of 2015, with almost even likes and dislikes. So what does it prove? We cover both sides of a story. Speaking of which: stay tuned for the upcoming Top 10 Reasons Nicki Minaj Is Hated if you need more justification for her inclusion on Worst Singers…

To a chorus of “this is not why I subscribed to this channel” comments, we released “Top 10 Reasons Donald Trump Would Make a Controversial President.” And the clip was “yuge!” No, but it did bring up a question at WatchMojo: to politicize or not to politicize? We’ve always bashed evenly: note Top 10 Angry Liberals and Crazy Conservatives. And when we do profiles, it’s generally actually fair and balanced. So we covered politics even before we launched our WMNews series, but in 2015 we started experimenting with more opinionated political Top 10s: you may’ve also seen Top 10 Reasons Why a Hillary Clinton Presidency Isn’t Guaranteed, Top 10 Reasons Why Bernie Sanders May Actually Become President, Top 10 Cringeworthy Tony Abbott Moments, etc. Were they all slam dunks? No. But we tried something new.

As one of the voices of WatchMojo, I like to think that the voiceover talent is integral to the company’s success. However, 2015 saw us introduce “Quickies,” which are basically bite-sized top 10 mash-ups that show the cream-of-the-crop when it comes to soundbites, with absolutely no narration, that we first starting posting to our Facebook page. Oh, shameless plug alert: be sure to like our Facebook page for more of the same! Anyway, if you’re sick of the sound of our voices, we’ve STILL got you covered with things like the Nic Cage Moments Quickie, “Top 10 Freddy Krueger Kills (Quickie)” and “Top 10 Jean-Claude Van Damme Splits (Quickie)” – imagine watching JCVD doing the splits ten times in a row? Definitely worth a minute-and-a-half of your time.

They’re the WatchMojo videos you never knew were missing from your life: Shortcuts, the comedy skit series where real WatchMojo employees pretend they can act [Ash suggested broll: “where is that goddamn delivery boy / Rebecca stare]! But seriously folks, the Shortcuts series is the name we gave the Trailers we created to promote certain series, clips or projects. For example, our most elaborate was a trailer for our App – yes we have an app! And it’s been downloaded almost 30 thousand times, even though we merit an award for the Least Promoted App Ever! So if you’re interested in a behind-the-scenes look at life at WatchMojo that is in no way accurate, add these to your must-watch list. But seriously, Dan does really Hulk-scream like that on the regular.

We love ranking things and we love making you guys happy, but as much as we reject most offers, occasionally we’ll like a product and company enough to be okay with advertising it. That’s why 2015 saw us experiment with Sponsored Content. We created “Top 10 Scariest Supernatural Movie Moments” in conjunction with the premiere of “Insidious Part 3, ” covered a few Smite-related topics and even ranked Gameloft games. So when we had to choose between going “informational” or “entertaining” for our unroll.me sponsorship, we went with the more practical Top 10 Email Productivity Tips over Top 10 Email Chain Letters from Hell or the more factual Top 10 Moments in Email History… And some of you asked: “hum… what’s email.” You get the idea.

2015 was the year WatchMojo asked the question: does every list need 10 entries? Well, with eye-catching topics about disgusting dinosaurs, time travel, cheating, or eating bugs, the WMFacts series has helped us answer that question with a resounding “no.” You guys seemed to like Top 5 Brutal Facts About Getting Shot especially, because – you know – gross. And, thanks to the success of WMFacts, we were encouraged to experiment with other new shows, including (but not limited to) The Dispatch, DeCONSTRUCTED and the Let’s Play Countdown. That’s why we now refer to 2015 as “The Year of the Show.” Of course, we also produced the (very) short-lived Know Your Mojo trivia show, so we also learned that you can’t win ‘em all.

We know Donald Trump won’t subscribe anytime soon, but WatchMojo has heard our international fans loud and clear: we’ve launched a Spanish channel, and Top 10 Canciones de Justin Timberlake was its inaugural video. Without patting ourselves on the back too much, we even reached 10,000 subscribers within the first 24-hours! Featuring a new voice but that same content you know and love, we’re bringing international audiences Top 10s on every topic under the sun. And in case you’re feeling left out, fear not! Well, it is a list of the good, the bad and the ugly, and this was one of the good, with Awkward Moments in Live TV coming out as part of our Awkward series and nabbing 92 million-minutes-worth of Mojoholic watchtime – the most of any video we published this year. By a mile. Coming in a not-so-close second was Celebrity Good Girls Gone Bad, which had Miley Cyrus as the thumbnail if you’re wondering why it had 75 million minutes of watchtime. Ms. Cyrus was followed up by Annoyingly Catchy Songs and, another celebrity-based clip, Top 10 Movie Couples Who Hated Each Other in Real Life. So what’s our takeaway? Mojoholics love awkward, annoying, animosity and ass – and we’ve got it all.

So what does this all prove? Just cause you’re good doesn’t mean you're perfect. But if there’s one guarantee, it’s that each video we produce will be better than the last.
