#10: Dual Berettas (AKA Dual Elites)
“Counter-Strike” Series (2000-12)
Accuracy is everything in Counter-Strike, as missing even one shot could make or break your team’s chances at a win. With this in mind, the Dual Berettas feel largely out of place. They’re extremely inaccurate, even while crouching and standing still, and it feels like you just can’t get that headshot no matter how precise your aim is. As if the accuracy wasn’t a big enough problem - they are fairly expensive, and lack the armor penetration of all other pistols. While they have been improved for CSGO for both cost and damage, you’ll find your money is better spent on literally anything else.
#9: Bowcaster
“Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy” (2003)
Nothing like a bit of fan service in your Star Wars games. Picking up a blaster or a lightsaber in-game usually feels satisfying, as we become immersed and understand what it was like to wield these weapons. So when Jedi Academy allowed us to wield our favourite wookie’s go-to weapon, we were sorely disappointed. Its damage is so low that we might as well have been shooting at an AT-AT when really we should have been blowing these enemies away. Even the spread shot can’t save this weapon, making us feel like a bunch of storm troopers shooting at a jedi. Maybe there’s a wookie secret to how to use it well?
#8: Hunting Rifle
“Left 4 Dead 2” (2009)
In a game where you are being chased by hordes of fast moving zombies -along with their mutated brethren, you’ll need a lot of stopping power. While the hunting rifle packs a good punch, it’s become less favourable in the 2nd foray into the Left 4 Dead series. With much more emphasis on the running part of the run and gun, and because this gun is highly inaccurate while mobile you don’t really have time to pull off those headshots anymore. While the Sniper Rifle suffers from the same lack of accuracy, it compensates with a larger magazine and higher damage. Really, with the inclusion of the Sniper Rifle, the Hunting Rifle feels utterly useless.
#7: Rapid Blaster
“Splatoon” (2015)
You’d think with the name ‘RAPID’ in the title, that your gun’s fire rate would be fast, right? Surprisingly not, as this little blaster is only a small step above the group. Lacking the fire rate of the Aerosprays, Nozzlenoses, and many other Shooters, it's made even less viable by its poor damage and ink coverage. Since covering the map in your team's ink is just as important as splatting the competition, the Rapid Blaster feels drastically less useful than other weapons, as it can’t accomplish either task as efficiently.
#6: Flamethrower
“Dead Space” (2008)
Necromorphs are a disturbing, pesky bunch of creatures, but as long as you have hot plasma or extremely sharp weapons, dismemberment isn’t too difficult. If you pick up a flamethrower however, you may find yourself at a disadvantage. Lacking that “edge” that all other weapons possess, its short range is only made worse by its damage over time. And with necromorphs not slowing down anytime soon, you need something that’ll slice through the competition. While it can be upgraded enough to be somewhat effective, waiting until they get in range could result in Isaac doing the splits instead.
#5: G.E.S. Bio Rifle
“Unreal Tournament” (1999)
The Bio Rifle has become a staple to the Unreal Tournament series -spanning over 15 years of shooting explosive goop at its enemies. While the Bio Rifle deals a considerable amount of damage, its slow charge rate and projectile speed make this weapon arbitrary in Unreal Tournament’s fast-paced environment. In the hands of a pro, this is a fearsome weapon; but achieving that level of skill with the Bio Rifle feels like a big waste of time compared to reaching the low skill and high reward of the other weapons in the game.
#4: Laser
“Contra” (1987)
While the Laser has been a staple throughout the Contra series, its first iteration would’ve been enough to remove it from future entries. Boasting very high damage, the Laser was weighed down by the low fire-rate, especially when compared to the other guns in the game. If you thought that the fire rate was terrible, any successive shot would remove the first laser from the screen – meaning you had to be super accurate and extremely patient. Thankfully, this feature was removed in later games, making the gun far more usable.
#3: Needler
“Halo 2” (2004)
Now we know what you’re thinking, but before Halo 3, this little pink devil was more of a clumsy oaf. The pink needles flew everywhere, becoming wildly inaccurate from its Combat Evolved counterpart. To make matters worse, the needles dealt less damage, had a slower fire rate, and splash damage was excessively lowered. Bungie thought to balance this out, they’d allow the Covenant weapon to be dual wielded, but this just made it even less accurate than before. It’d be another three years before it gained its infamous OP status.
#2: PS20
“Deus Ex” (2000)
Even to this day, Deus Ex is hailed by many as not only one of the greatest games of all time, but an outstanding achievement and landmark in terms of game design. Yet, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as Deus Ex does have a few… problems -namely with this strange pistol. Known as the PS20, this little handgun is an offense to all weapon designers. With only one use before it’s thrown away, it's more of a waste of space in your inventory than a useful tool. In a futuristic world where anything is possible, why design a pistol with only one shot?
#1: Klobb
“GoldenEye 007” (1997)
The golden gun, this is not; the Klobb is the one gun no agent wants to pick up. The Klobb is an SMG with low damage and accuracy, which is pretty common with most video game SMGs, as the rate of fire is supposed to balance that out. Unfortunately, the Klobb has a pretty low rate of fire too. It can be dual wielded, though doubling up on the uselessness doesn’t make it any more effective. Believe us, if the awful noise it makes as spray bullets all over the place isn’t enough to alert the guards, then that god-awful reload sound will.
