Top 20 Best Money Heist Moments

Top 20 Best Money Heist Moments
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Daniela Valcárcel
Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 20 moments from Money Heist. For this list, we'll be looking at the most exciting and iconic moments from all seasons of this Spanish crime drama. If you haven't seen it yet, consider this your Spoiler alert. Our countdown includes the Hospital Clown, the Reunion with Raquel, Rio's capture, the Declaration of War, and more!

#19: Alicia Sierra Goes into Labor

The fifth season starts with the professor having been captured by Inspector Alicia Sierra, who was determined to figure out every detail of the final phase of the heist. Little did she know that Colonel Tamayo was about to betray her on live television, and that the tension from it would cause her to go into labor. And just like any other event in this series, her delivery had certain complications. This meant that she had to release the professor so he could assist her in the birth of her daughter. The moment marked the beginning of a transformation for the bloodthirsty character, since she finds herself forced to trust her nemesis after being betrayed by her allies.

#18: Rio’s Capture

After the first heist, Rio and Tokyo spend two years on a paradisiacal island. But, as we already know, Tokyo likes a little more movement in her life, so when she can't take it any longer, she decides to go in search of new scenery. After being without contact for several days, Rio tries communicating with her, but his call gets intercepted by Interpol and he ends up captured before he could even blink. It’s at this point when Tokyo desperately reaches out to the professor asking for help in trying to free Rio.

#17: Every Time Arturito Messes Up

Few characters on television have been as obnoxious as Arturito. He’s also selfish, cowardly and impulsive: every time he’s given the chance, he comes up with a clumsy and risky plan to be the hero, but he only ends up making things worse for everyone. That's why we enjoy it so much whenever his plans go horribly wrong. The last big mess Arturo makes happens after discovering where they store all their arsenal. There, he tries provoking Denver in an attempt to get him close enough so he can attack him. However, his efforts ended up enraging Stockholm instead, who managed to ambush him from behind and ended up giving him a near fatal shot.

#16: Moscow’s Death

One of the saddest moments for all the fans was Agustín's death after he received 3 bullets during Tokyo’s big return. The scene left us all with a lump in our throats, as in the midst of his delirium, Moscow mistakes Tokyo for Denver's mother. He apologizes for having abandoned her, and assures her how much he always loved her. If that wasn't enough to get a tear out of you, then maybe his farewell to his son Denver does. Someone get us a tissue, please.

#15: Undercover Hostage

This is one of the great plot twists of season four. In one of Arturito's many shenanigans, he manages to get a gun and attempts to shoot Matías. However, one of the hostages takes a stand and points another gun at him. It’s at this moment that we learn the identity of “Manila”, an infiltrated agent from the gang. She shoots him in the leg and accuses him of abusing another hostage.

#14: Berlin's Past

If you were one of the many who cried over Berlin’s death, you surely jumped for joy when you saw him again. After Rio’s capture, the Professor decides to carry out his brother's plan to rob the Bank of Spain. Throughout the Professor's memories, we can once again see this character who caused this sort of love-hate effect - or perhaps a mild Stockholm syndrome - on us in the previous seasons. And we continue to see him, his past and his path to participating in the first heist until the very last episode of the series.

#13: The Matriarchy Begins

During the first heist, there was more than one conflict between Tokyo and Berlin over the leadership of the plan. In one of those comings and goings, Berlin, being the head, starts losing control to the point where he risks his partners’ lives. That's when Nairobi intervenes and takes control of the heist. Her way of informing the professor about this change with her phrase, “Let the matriarchy begin” has now become iconic.

#12: The Entrance to the Bank of Spain

Taking advantage of their obscene amounts of money, the gang arms themselves with all kinds of “toys'' to achieve a triumphant entry into the Bank of Spain. Armored trucks, army uniforms, state-of-the-art listening technology so they could anticipate every step of the police, airships flying over the center of Madrid ... and 140 million Euros raining on people who were in the streets, were just some of the tricks that allowed them to carry out the first step of the plan.

#11: Tokyo Returns to the Royal Mint

After the Professor helps her escape from impending incarceration, Tokyo finds herself alone and unable to communicate with him again. So she decides to follow her gut and act on her own. Disguised as a police officer with a motorcycle, Tokyo makes a somewhat cryptic and half-romantic call to Rio. In the middle of apparently meaningless phrases, Rio somehow understands her order to open the front door. This allows for a spectacular entrance that, unfortunately, would later bring tragic consequences to this group of assailants.

#10: The Reunion with Raquel

The relationship between Sergio and Raquel began as something quite unexpected. Neither of them believed they would fall in love so badly, but it happened. That’s right: the police inspector ended up falling for the professor all while clueless that the criminal mind she was so desperately chasing was always right in front of her. After the heist’s successful ending, he disappeared, leaving her defeated and heartbroken. She later finds clues about where she could find him via the postcards he had given her. With a scene almost identical to that of the moment they met, only this time on a paradisiacal beach, the lovers meet again, giving the perfect ending to the entire series..... oh wait ... uuh… never mind.

#9: Denver’s Big Move

Of the entire gang, the most reluctant to commit such a high-stakes crime again was Denver. With Stockholm and his son Cincinnati in his life, it was understandable, but even so he ended up agreeing to do it for Rio. Despite being afraid of leaving his son fatherless, Denver did not hesitate during the most stressful moment of the robbery. Even though the police were already preparing to attack, he came out of the bank with a white flag in one hand and some red boxes in which the darkest secrets of the nation were kept in the other. This was a key move to achieve a withdrawal from the police.

#8: The Professor Disguised as a Homeless Person

The Professor often finds himself trying to help - or rather control - everyone inside the factory. One loose end he needed to take care of was the little issue of the old red Ibiza. Arriving at the junkyard just moments before the police, he manages to plant evidence against Berlin. But when cornered by the police, he decides to undergo a radical transformation by posing as a homeless man, and he takes his performance to the limit. This man deserves a freaking Oscar.

#7: Berlin’s Death

This group of assailants would probably not have had as many problems as they did if Berlin hadn’t been their leader. But in the end, when things were getting out of hand, it was he who sacrificed himself in order to get his allies out safely. To make the scene even more emotional, this is also the moment when we find out that Berlin is the Professor's brother ... meaning that those of us who had been able to hold back our tears up until this point would begin crying our eyes out…

#6: The Professor Loses the Gold

At the precise moment when the professor was about to remove all the gold from the stormwater tank, he was interrupted and arrested by a whole police operation. When all seems lost, the professor realizes that it was all part of an illusion created to steal the gold from him. Not only that, but the one person who could have done it was Berlin's son, whom we had been seeing all season long through flashbacks showing his father teaching him the "family business."

#5: The Hospital Clown

Raquel Murillo sets a trap on the Professor by making him believe that Ángel, the only person that knew his identity, had woken up from the coma. As this would be a great danger to him, he had to find out whether it was true or not. As always, he comes up with a way to discover the truth without getting caught, thanks to a brilliant plan involving clowns, a stuffed rabbit, and his extraordinary ability for impersonations. Once again, his lover found herself disappointed, not knowing how close she was to finding the criminal she was looking for

#4: “Bella Ciao”

More than a song, this is an anthem of resistance. And just as it was used in WWII by the Italians to defeat the fascists, these thieves use it to cheer each other up or when celebrating throughout the seasons. However, the scene in which the Professor and Berlin sing it, is perhaps one of the most epic and emotional moments: at the same time that the police finds all the evidence they need to catch the thieves, we can see, in the Professor’s memories, the emergence of the plan that would lead them to make the best heist in history.

#3: Tokyo’s Death

Tokyo, Denver and Manila needed to escape the military who were about to break into the kitchen where they had taken refuge after an epic battle. That's when they discover there’s a service elevator, but Tokyo is too hurt to be able to go down there. She not only orders her friends to leave without her, but also experiences the most emotional farewell with Rio, who had made a hole in the ground in an attempt to save her. Then, she confronts the military while prepared for her imminent death. Of course, if she had to go, there was no way she wasn’t going to have an epic exit: Tokyo used the grenades that she had strapped on her chest to take her opponents with her!

#2: The Declaration of War

By this point, we had managed to get by without anyone being killed, but the rules of the game were about to be changed - and all because of Alicia. This spiteful inspector uses Nairobi's son to get her to look out the window and order a sniper to shoot her. At the same time, she asks Suárez to fake Lisbon’s murder, knowing that the Professor was listening to everything without being able to do anything. As a consequence, and in an act of utter desperation, the robbers use their deadliest weapons to officially declare war on the police.

#1: The Greatest Escape

If there's one thing our favorite assailants have, it's the ability to end their heists with a cleverly planned escape. Although the end of the second robbery was quite good, nothing compares to the first one for us: an intense final shooting, Berlin’s heroic sacrifice and a perfectly timed exit to avoid being caught by the police. It was the perfect ending to a perfect heist…!
