Top 20 Most Memorable Graham Norton Show Moments
Welcome to WatchMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the most memorable and iconic moments from The Graham Norton Show. Which of these moments bring a smile to your face? Let us know in the comments!
#20: Paul Rudd’s Basic Instinct
Turns out there was a lot more sexual tension on the set of “Ant-Man” than we thought. While promoting “Captain America: Civil War,” Paul Rudd went into some background detail about his time during his solo flick as Marvel’s tiniest hero. Apparently during one of Michael Douglas’ monologues, Paul Rudd thought it would be a genius idea if he re-enacted the famous scene from “Basic Instinct” by pretending to expose himself. As it turns out, he’s no Sharon Stone and - after some fumbling - he ended up getting called out by Michael Douglas as a pervert. Ouch.
#19: Pick-Up Lines
This has got to be one of the best couch line-ups the show’s ever had. Bryan Cranston, Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch together turned out to be comedy gold, and nowhere more so than when it was revealed that the “Breaking Bad” star had once worked as a director for old school dating videos. This, of course, led the three of them to try and recreate them. As such, we’re welcomed to the surreal, yet oh so funny, scenario of Heisenberg, Newt Scamander, and Doctor Strange delivering some incredibly cheesy, yet oddly effective, pick-up lines. Is it hot in here?
#18: Hulk Burn
If you thought the giant green rage monster was destructive when he went on a rampage, just wait until you hear some of Mark Ruffalo’s epic disses. Along with two of his Avengers co-stars, they are joined on the couch by English comedian Josh Widdicombe, who at one point is asked about his greatest fear. Now, despite undoubtedly having to face hecklers in his life, Josh, as well as everyone else, is totally unprepared for Mark Ruffalo’s interjection, where he insinuates that the young Brit was probably terrified of girls over twelve. The Hulk truly is a savage. Well-played.
#17: Greg Davies Breaks Ryan Gosling
You’d think that by having to share the spotlight with heavyweights like Jodie Foster, Russell Crowe, and Ryan Gosling, British comedian Greg Davies would be feel slightly overshadowed. Well, not after this. Recalling a time when he used to be a teacher, Greg Davies tells the story about the day he came into school hung-over, suffered a horrific bowel movement, and realized he was wearing his mother’s underwear by mistake. To make matters worse, while he was having this crisis, he forgot he was hooked up to a microphone directly linked to a hearing-impaired student. We’re not sure what’s funnier, the story itself or Ryan Gosling’s face as he fails to remain composed.
#16: Eyebrow-Off
Who would have thought that the Mother of Dragons and the Enchantress would have something in common? As it happens, both Emilia Clarke and Cara Delevingne are quite talented when it comes to showing off their eyebrows, which they put to the test as they proceeded to move them to music in ways that few of us can probably pull off. Granted, we’re not sure that’s going to help Khaleesi take back Westeros or stop “Suicide Squad” from being a terrible film, but it’s damn entertaining to watch!
#15: Jack Whitehall’s Illiterate Toilet Incident
Turns out British comedian Jack Whitehall and Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Lawrence make quite the dynamic duo. Their story involving Harrison Ford was a gem, but by far the funniest moment came from when Jack Whitehall explained a rather unfortunate incident when he was in a restaurant in Spain. Faced with a seemingly broken toilet, he tried madly to explain to a Spanish-speaking waiter his little dilemma regarding their faulty facilities. As if the language barrier wasn’t bad enough, the fact that Jack had to drag the waiter to said toilet, only for it to suddenly work, makes the whole tale as awkward as it is hilarious - with Jennifer Lawrence barely keeping it together throughout.
#14: Chris Pratt’s Perfect Essex Accent
Britain is home to a whole slew of varying accents that foreigners might find difficult to mimic. That’s what made this moment all the more outlandishly amazing when actor Chris Pratt revealed he had mastered the dialect associated with the county of Essex. As it turns out, he’d been exposed to the trashy show “The Only Way Is Essex” while filming “Guardians of the Galaxy” in the UK, and after seeing so much of it, had actually managed to nail the accent. Given everyone’s reactions, the authenticity of it was mind-blowing.
#13: Modeling
Besides winning Oscars, Jennifer Lawrence and Eddie Redmayne seem to have a lot of other things in common. Coincidentally, this includes briefly dabbling in modeling with very mixed results. While we’re not quite sold on Eddie Redmayne rocking those seemingly hand knit sweaters and hoodies, at least they’re a little more presentable than Jennifer Lawrence’s, whose photos never saw the light of day due to her being a tad too… boisterous. Avh well, a loss for the modeling industry is Graham Norton’s gain.
#12: Young Ryan Gosling’s Dance Moves
Everyone has to start somewhere. While promoting “La La Land,” Ryan Gosling gets something of an unwanted trip down memory lane as Graham reveals they have clips of him as a child at a dance competition. The video itself is adorable to watch, as a young Gosling shows off his moves. But what’s even funnier is when he reveals that behind the scenes the whole thing had a much darker side, what with the other dancers flipping him the bird before his performance started. Kids can be so cruel.
#11: Baking Innuendos
During a New Year’s special, Graham managed to land a whole slew of celebrities on his couch, including Hugh Jackman, Billy Crystal, and the co-hosts of the highly successful “Great British Bake Off:” Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry. As it turns out, many of the comments these two star bakers have made over the course of their series can be interpreted as rather erotic. Naturally, Graham asked Hugh Jackman and Billy Crystal to read some of them with some rather raunchy mood music. Have you ever wanted to see Wolverine talk dirty to Mike Wazowski? Well, here it is in all its kinky glory.
#10: Nunchuck Skills
Rebel Wilson is a woman of many talents, and while she’s mostly known for her singing and acting, it turns out she’s also a ninja in training. After revealing that she’s pretty handy when it comes to wielding nunchucks, she goes on to put her money where her mouth is and floors everybody by showing off her skills. With an oddly fitting backing track and zero fear in her performance, it’s not hard to see why Kit Harington and Matt LeBlanc look so stunned. When you can make Joey Tribbiani and Jon Snow gape, then you know you’ve made a hell of an impression.
#9: Russell Crowe & the Red Chair
While promoting “Man of Steel” with his fellow cast members, everybody’s favorite Australian was given the chance to control the red chair section of Graham’s show. The premise is rather simple; audience members have to get a laugh with a story of theirs, but if they fail to do so, the host can pull a nearby lever and send them flying back in their seat. Eager to take control, Graham hands over the reins to Crowe, who shows no mercy and pretty soon bodies are sent flying. Are you not entertained?!
#8: Hugh Bonneville & The Wooly Jumper
Few ensembles in this show’s history can rival the comedy gold combination of Matt Damon, Bill Murray and Hugh Bonneville. As Graham Norton quizzes Hugh about his appearance on “Top Gear”, Damon and Murray (and the audience too) all immediately go into stitches at the sight of Bonneville’s wooly jumper. Apparently it can get quite chilly in the “Top Gear” studio, but that still doesn’t explain why he’d be wearing lipstick. This whole episode was a riot, but Bill Murray grilling Bonneville about his “lippy” and the wooly jumper was an all time moment. Even Matt Damon gets in a couple digs!
#7: Pine Nuts vs. Cumberbitches
We all know fans can go a little overboard sometimes, but you’d be hard-pressed to find more devoted followers than those of Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch. While promoting “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” two of Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs were asked about their fan bases, and not only did their hilarious nicknames come to light, it was also revealed that many fans were willing to travel great distances just to see the actors. Turns out that there were more Cumberbitches in the audience, but when you have a Pine Nut who took a direct flight from Japan just to get a glimpse of Captain Kirk, that shows a special kind of commitment.
#6: Seth MacFarlane’s Rogues’ Gallery
While interviewing the creator of “Family Guy” about his new comedy, “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” Graham couldn’t resist asking him to let loose a few of his signature voices. Not only do we get some classic lines from the Griffins, such as Brian and Stewie’s universally loved Cool Whip routine, we also get Seth’s impression of the famous “Taken” speech, with the part of Liam Neeson played by Kermit the Frog. He would reprise this yet again after some further prodding in another appearance, where MacFarlane gave us the treat of hearing some of Cyndi Lauper’s greatest hits… sung by Peter and Stewie Griffin. How’s that for karaoke!
#5: Rejected on National Television
While the red chair stories can be hit and miss, they always end on a laugh because they’re either genuinely funny or contestants are sent flying back in the chair. But none has ever been quite like this. Turns out the gentleman’s story involves a member of the audience who initially rejected his proposal for a date because it clashed with the show, and so he decided to go on live TV and ask her again. It may seem like a rather sweet gesture… until it all comes apart when she rejects him again! Superstars Kylie Minogue and Simon Pegg couldn't help but react to it all.
#4: Emma Stone & the Spice Girls
When Emma Stone’s manic obsession with the 90’s pop group came to light during the press tour of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” it almost overshadowed everything else about the film. After sharing a fairly friendly story about how she became entranced by the Spice Girls as a child, Graham slowly begins to suggest that the Spice Girls are actually assembled backstage, to which Gwen Stacy nearly has a breakdown. The tension builds and builds… only to reveal that they’re not there at all, leaving a very let down Emma Stone and the rest of the guests laughing their heads off.
#3: Fresh Prince Reunion
After taking the Internet by storm with his live rendition of the classic “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song, Will Smith decided to up the ante with his next appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” bringing along his son Jaden, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and even Carlton himself: Alfonso Ribeiro. Not only do we get the Carlton dance in all its glory, but the whole cast goes on to perform Apache by The Sugarhill Gang, hip thrusts and all. Even Graham gets a chance to bust a move and jump on it!
#2: The Fly
Turns out when surprises occur on “The Graham Norton Show,” things don’t get deterred; things get hysterical. When a fly invades the couch, the combined might of Chris O’Dowd, Kristen Bell, and Steve Carell tries to kill it, but it manages to escapes… until a very unfortunate Chris O’Dowd accidentally chews it after it lands in his glass. We’re not sure what’s funnier; Kristen Bell’s jump scare, Steve Carell’s killer instinct, or the look of horror on Chris O’Dowd’s face. It may have been unexpected, but it left everyone in fits of laughter.
#1: Miriam Margolyes
Despite the fact that she appears prim and proper, and is a veteran actor, this chat show favorite certainly has a naughty streak in her. Every time she’s been on the show, Miriam Margolyes comes armed with a story or memory that’s so out of left field and crass that you and everybody on the couch are left in shock. Whether it’s lending a hand to a soldier out of a sense of duty or recollecting the time she witnessed Laurence Olivier, whenever the OBE shows up, you can bet she’s bringing a whole lot of laughs with her.
