#20: Sabrina (1954)
Unsurprisingly, this film centers around two men vying for Sabrina Fairchilds affection. It also features the lead actress wearing some exceptional wardrobe. When Hepburns Fairchild goes to Paris, she comes back with twice the fashion sense. Shes also surrounded by the swagger of men played by William Holden and Humphrey Bogart. Billy Wilders movie includes the work of costumer Edith Head, with some additional influence courtesy of Hubert de Givenchy. A team of talented creators go to great lengths to make the title woman look fabulous. From party scenes to the satisfying end, viewers will enjoy cataloguing the sharp costumes.
#19: Funny Face (1957)
For most classic movie fans, they only need to hear this one stars Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire. It gets even better when you realize this is a musical involving a fashion magazine. The editor and photographer end up finding a model in natural talent Jo Stockton. With Edith Head and Hubert de Givenchy involved, Funny Face includes an endless array of stellar costumes. Its more than an excuse to see beautiful clothes, but those dont hurt either. Director Stanley Donen fills in the extraordinary visuals with some unforgettable music numbers. Hepburn and Astaire are fantastic together, each providing their star power to an ode to fashion.
#18: Wicked (2024)
Adapting the musical for the big screen, Wicked comes with a firm foundation for style. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star as fellow magic students, rivals, and then friends. In this fantastical world, anything is possible in terms of clothing. Characters wear coordinated outfits that fit each of their personalities, with color and material to match their fiercely independent ways. Both the good and evil roles get plenty of opportunities to stand out with their clothes. Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell dresses every single part with purpose, making you remember each of them for their iconic visuals.
#17: To Catch a Thief (1955)
With two of the more glamorous performers in Hollywood history, To Catch a Thief is brimming with style. Cary Grant and Grace Kelly light up the screen in this fun caper. Alfred Hitchcocks film is thrilling, but it also leaves room for some exceptional costumes. The wardrobe in this movie helps to send viewers to the French Riviera. Grant plays the thief that loves a good outfit as much as he does jewels. His co-star Kelly is the love interest, displaying great taste and wowing the audience with her impeccable choices. Not all Hitchcock films are this bright and sunny, but this one also makes you want to visit France in your fanciest clothes.
#16: Once Upon a Timein Hollywood (2019)
In this slice of the late 1960s, Quentin Tarantino spares no expense in recreating the era. This includes some period costumes for the high-profile cast. Leonardo DiCaprios lead wears slick clothes on and off film sets, showing that hes a true movie star. Brad Pitts stuntman even wows in denim and t-shirts. Not to be outdone, Margot Robbie rounds out the experience with her bubbly presence and bright wardrobe. Tarantino writes in every kind of character from hippies to showbiz types and everyone in between. Alongside Oscar-winning production design, the filmmaker and his costumer Arianne Phillips make you feel like youre in older Hollywood.
#15: Barbie (2023)
You cant talk about this famous doll without mentioning the outfits. Thankfully for fans of this Mattel icon, the film indulges in their most nostalgic fantasies. Director Greta Gerwig and her team combine decades of fashion into Barbie. Its almost shocking how much the costuming, production design, and color help to tell the story. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are among the perfect conduits for this vision. They certainly wear the clothes well, but they also sell the wild images. The comedy only helps to add cohesion to it all. Its definitely a movie with outrageous style, leaning into its pink aesthetics with reckless abandon.
#14: The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
His films are nothing short of ornate. If you know Wes Anderson, you know he makes everything with absolute precision. This period piece takes place in Eastern Europe at a fancy hotel. Given the setting, Anderson creates diorama boxes full of fancy-clothed people. Ralph Fiennes hotel concierge is always prim and proper, surrounded by underlings that are expected to be the same. Theres also a huge cast of characters that could be considered fashion conscious to downright stylish. Even as the plot leaves the rich accommodations, the heroes and secret society members wear their absolute best.
#13: Moulin Rouge! (2001)
For all of his movies, Baz Luhrmann crosses the line between modern and vintage aesthetics. Its full of more modern pop music and costumes from the early 1900s. This eclectic mix makes for an entertaining film, creating a mashup of epic proportions. The doomed romance between Christian and Satine wouldnt be the same without their costumes. Luhrmann captures the Bohemian side of Paris, with many artistic flourishes to push the envelope. Every romantic scene, musical number, dance sequence is more meaningful with some daring clothing choices. Nicole Kidmans character alone stuns with some lavish outfits and expensive jewelry.
#12: Rear Window (1954)
While Stewart spends the movie in pajamas, his co-star wears the finest clothes available. Grace Kelly shines in each of her scenes and her wardrobe only enhances her natural beauty. Legendary designer Edith Head is vital to the aesthetic, showing off her masterful eye for dressing characters. The role of Lisa Fremont lets Kelly flaunt many dresses worthy of Vogue and beyond. In between all of the mystery, Stewarts hero somehow isnt looking at his girlfriend the whole time. The larger ensemble have some impressive outfits for the 1950s, but all eyes are on the lead actress for her masterclass in effortless style.
#11: Marie Antoinette (2006)
Taking place in the late 1700s, Sofia Coppolas movie feels both authentic and like a stylish remix of the time period. Marie Antoinette explores the French queen with both period gowns and real locations. This would be impressive on its own, but Coppola throws in some unique changes throughout. This includes adding in Converse shoes to give 21st century audiences something to identify. The result lets people connect more with the older looks, making them want to jump through the screen even more. Royalty never looked or sounded quite this fun. The movie manages to tackle real history, but it does so in a more inviting and punk rock way.
#10: Sex and the City (2008)
The Sex and the City TV show was known for its memorable fashions - and while this movie wasnt necessarily globally beloved by fans, costume designer Patricia Field still got to display some of her best work to date. From the scene of the girls trying on outfits in Carries closet to her Vogue bridal sequence, the entire movie is a visual treat for fashion lovers. The styles are brighter, bolder, and more over-the-top than they were in the original series, but still stay true to each individual characters personal style.
#9: Annie Hall (1977)
Not many movies can claim to have to trailblaze an entire fashion movement, but Woody Allens classic romantic comedy Annie Hall did just that. The titular characters menswear-inspired look was never intended to spark a new style, but it inspired a generation of women nonetheless. Diane Keatons iconic androgynous look was a blend of Ralph Laurens deft hand - he lent many pieces to the film before he was a household name - and costume stylist Ruth Morley. But the fun fact you might not know is that many of the pieces used in the film actually belonged to the leading actress herself.
#8: Atonement (2007)
While many entries on our list today are for movies where there are many memorable outfits, this film is notable for a single gown. This 2007 period piece, based on the novel by Ian McEwan, offers stunning World War II era sets and gorgeous cinematography, but for the most part, it isnt exactly considered a fashion flick. The one exception is the emerald green gown that Keira Knightley's character wears during one of the films key scenes. In fact, this dress was voted by readers of UKs InStyle Magazine as the single best movie costume of all time, beating out many other cinema classics.
#7: Grease (1978)
The 1950s setting of Grease makes for a visual smorgasbord of pastel colors, poodle skirts, and bomber jackets. The initial contrast between good-girl Sandy and her edgy new friends, the Pink Ladies, means theres something for everyone in this feel-good musical. Whether you like Sandys demure hoop skirts or Rizzos more seductive pencil skirts, this film will make you long for a bygone era. Then of course theres the outfit that Sandy wears in the final scene when shes trying to impress Danny. Weve all tried to emulate that sleek all-black outfit and devil-may-care attitude.
#6: La Dolce Vita (1960)
Federico Fellini brought Italian glamour to the masses in 1960 with his groundbreaking film, La Dolce Vita. This movie is stylish in more ways than one, with the art direction being a major consideration for every frame. The costume designers clearly put significant effort into both the mens and womens outfits for the film. Of course, theres the curve-hugging dress worn for the iconic fountain scene, but did you know that the character of Marcello Rubini may have originated the idea of wearing sunglasses at night?
#5: Clueless (1995)
Cher and her friends Valley Girl style sparked many memorable 90s trends. From the plethora of plaid to the slinky slip dresses, this movie was filled to the brim with incredible fad-worthy pieces. What girl didnt fantasize about having a computer system to help her pick an outfit in the morning? Somehow, even over 20 years after its release, the Beverly Hills teen styles on display in Clueless still feel fresh and totally wearable. The 90s are coming back and were not complaining.
#4: The Devil Wears Prada (1996)
In a film all about the cutthroat industry of fashion journalism, there were of course going to be a bevy of beautiful outfits to drool over. At Vogue - oops, we mean Runway - fashion is a competition and new hire Andy learns quickly that her cerulean sweaters and practical skirts are not going to fly. Anne Hathaway is queen of the makeover scene and her looks after her transformation are totally stunning. Meryl Streep as editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly inspired amped-up office dressing in viewers and there were no exceptions in the rest of the cast.
#3: The Great Gatsby (2013)
There have been two notable film adaptations of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic work The Great Gatsby and while both featured incredible fashions, Baz Luhrmann's 2013 version perfectly exemplifies the excess of the period. Academy Award winning costume director Catherine Martin - who is married to Luhrmann - interpreted the Jazz Age fashions and modernized them slightly for contemporary audiences. Miuccia Prada designed many of the costumes for extras, as well as for Carey Mulligans Daisy Buchanan. The flapper dresses, extravagant beading, jeweled headpieces, and tons of sparkle made for memorable looks that will be beloved for generations to come.
#2: A Single Man (2009)
It comes as no surprise that a movie directed by esteemed menswear designer Tom Ford would be a feast for the eyes. The film focuses on the life of a gay university professor, portrayed by English actor Colin Firth. His characters style is most in focus, with every detail meticulously and flawlessly executed. For men looking for some fashion inspiration in cinema, they need look no further than A Single Man. Julianne Moores modish 1960s look (and especially her flawless cat eye makeup) is also something to behold.
#1: Breakfast at Tiffanys (1961)
When you think of iconic movie style, theres no doubt that Audrey Hepburns classic look in this 1961 film comes to mind. The entire movie is filled with beautiful costumes. But of course, the most memorable is the black gown, opera length gloves, and pearls that Holly Golightly wore while eating a pastry outside of Tiffanys. Three copies of the original dress were made and when one sold at auction, it brought in close to a million dollars. It wasnt necessarily the first Little Black Dress to appear on film, but its undoubtedly one that made the look an essential one.
