Top 3 Best Bits from Doctor Who Series 11 Ep. 1
The Doctor's back. And we've got all of time and space in front of us. But first; cranes, trains and technobabble. Welcome to WatchMojo UK, and today we're counting down the top three 'best bits' from Jodie Whittaker's long-anticipated “Doctor Who” debut.
For this list, we'll be rounding up the time-travelling highlights from Season 11, Episode 1 of “Doctor Who” – “The Woman Who Fell to Earth”. And, just in case you somehow haven't seen it yet, spoilers are definitely incoming.
#3: Karl from the Train
With so many new characters to meet, greet and get to know, there’s a lot going on in the first few minutes. And, there’s a definite ‘rise of the underdog’ theme. We see Ryan determined to defy dyspraxia; Yaz frustrated with life as a traffic cop; and Graham trying his best to win over his wife’s grandson (who’s also Ryan). But then they all end up on a broken-down train, and this most unlikely team sets off on an even unlikelier adventure. But, wait. We’re forgetting one definitely important person. Carl makes a quick exit from the opening kerfuffle, but he reappears later on – armed with a hard hat, some self-help slogans and a slathering of comic relief. Eventually, he plays a pretty integral role.
#2: Thirteen’s First Monster
While it is all eyes on the Doctor, Whittaker needs a first round opponent. And she gets it with the cold-as-ice, creepy-as-hell, Tim Shaw. This guy’s on a mission to claim a ‘Carl from the Train’-shaped human trophy, to prove himself a worthy leader. And, as part of the process, he a) implants everyone with an ultra-ominous ‘DNA Bomb’, b) kills a drunk guy mid-kebab, and c) decorates his own face with his victims’ teeth. Nice. Obviously, the Doctor’s none too pleased with all of that, so she sets about stopping this ruthless ruffian by any means necessary – all whilst wielding some freshly-forged and seriously souped-up sonic tech. It doesn’t matter how many molars you’ve got in your forehead, you can’t beat some good ol’ fashioned Gallifreyan gadgetry!
#1: The Crane Jump
This episode is a real whistle-stop tour for the Doctor, herself. We see her rock some googly goggles and stick her finger up her nose, but it’s not all fun, games and fried egg sandwiches. Bradley Walsh is actually at the centre of the story’s most emotional moment, but Whittaker delivers a couple of rousing speeches, too. First, she gives this especially effective insight into what regeneration really feels like; [LINK]. And then she remembers her name just in time to give Tim Shaw what for. The crane sequence is when our hero truly returns, with a slow-mo leap of faith (and a comic quip about her own legs). True, she can’t prevent the tragedy that follows. But you know she’s got our backs. Now all she needs is the TARDIS. But relocating that looks easier said than done.
