Top 3 Things To Remember Before Seeing The Nun

When it comes to the order of its events, the “Conjuring” movies sure like to jump around. “The Nun” is set around 1952, before the main storyline of “Annabelle: Creation” which is set in 1955, and “Annabelle,” which is set in 1967. The film takes places at a convent in Romania where a nun has committed suicide, and a demon named Valak is lurking around. We’ve previously seen Valak in the “Conjuring 2” where he haunted the Warrens and terrorized the Hodgson family in the late 1970s – so we can expect more of his brand of terrifying in this new addition.

Valak was also briefly referenced in “Annabelle: Creation.” One of the main characters, Sister Charlotte, had spent some time in the Romanian convent, and had a picture taken of herself and three nuns who were living there. But upon looking closely at the picture, Samuel Mullins noticed there was someone else in the picture behind the nuns, which is revealed to be the infamous demon. With scenes like this, it’s not clear whether the filmmakers are trying to build a Stephen King like mythos, or if they’re just using one movie to promote the next one…but either way, there is one sinister connection.

While Valak commonly dresses up in a nun’s habit, that’s not his only form. Lorraine Warren claimed the demon merely chose that “blasphemous” form to “attack” her faith. Another one of Valak’s forms is the Crooked Man, a twisted take on the classic nursery rhyme that terrorized the Hodgson Family. Before he’s sent back to hell, Valak reverts to his true form, a horned demon. We’ll have to find out in the next movie if he has any new forms up his sleeve…
