While the Netflix series may be new, it’s actually based on a novel by Caroline Kepnes which was released by Simon and Schuster in 2015. The plot of the book and series are the same: Joe is a bookstore employee who falls for one of his customers, Guinevere Beck, and things take a dark and shocking turn. The book was named the “thriller of the year” by Daily Mail and king of horror Stephen King deemed it 'Hypnotic and scary'. We all know that book adaptations often make the best TV shows and movies!

The show has already proved popular with the critics, reaching a score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 86%. Judy Berman of Time Magazine said, “YOU is actually a wicked satire of social media, self-proclaimed "nice guys" and the twisted ideals of romantic fiction.” A writer at Vox said that they, “frequently brilliant, a thrilling dissection of the stories we tell and the reasons we tell them, with a season finale unlike anything else on TV this year.” Not only that, but the show made it onto several “Best of 2018” lists including The New York Times, Associated Press and TV Guide.
#3: Penn Badgley
The star of the show here is antihero Joe, played expertly by Penn Badgley, who the audience isn’t sure whether to sympathize with or not. You’ll recognize Badgley from his most prominent role playing Dan on “Gossip Girl”. According to most accounts, he totally nails this creepy role. Teen drama fans will also be interested to know that Shay Mitchell, who played Emily Fields on “Pretty Little Liars”, is also part of the cast. Rounding out the cast is Elizabeth Lail as Guinevere Beck and and John Stamos, who plays a recurring role as therapist Dr. Nicky.

In September of 2018, the first season of “You” was released on Lifetime, and on December 3rd of the same year, Netflix announced that it would be taking the show on as a “Netflix original” and distributing it on their platform. Even before the first season aired though, “You” had already been renewed for a season two, which will be based on the follow up novel by Caroline Kepnes titled “Hidden Bodies”. We don’t have a release date for the second season yet, but based on the name alone we know it’s something to look forward to.

One thing many reviewers have been quick to point out is the use of the “nice guy” trope, because although Joe is taking sinister action when it comes to Beck, he manages to justify everything he does by saying he wants to protect her and keep her safe and happy. While this is definitely satire, it will surely make audiences think.
