For this list, we’re looking at the biggest changes that Thor’s third outing had on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since we’ll be discussing the events of the God of Hammers’ most recent film, a spoiler alert is in effect. #5: Fixing the Gauntlet Issue The Infinity Gauntlet is a one-of-kind item that grants limitless power to anyone who collects and fills it with the six infinity stones. In the comics, the Mad Titan Thanos used the completed weapon to wipe out half of all life in the universe with the snap of his fingers. After the completed gauntlet was spotted on Asgard in “Thor” before Thanos put on an incomplete version in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” many fans noted the discrepancy. Some speculated that the MCU might, in fact, have two Gauntlets since the one we see in “Thor” is right-handed, but Thanos wears his on his left hand. However, Hela’s throwaway line that the Gauntlet in Odin’s treasure vault is a fake confirmed that Thanos has the one true gauntlet. It’s good news for the continuity of the MCU and bad news for our heroes. #4: Hulk Takes Full Control In Ragnarok, we learned that ever since we last saw the Hulk fly off into the sunset at the end of “Age of Ultron,” was busy fighting in the Contest of Champions on Sakaar… without a trace of Bruce Banner. In the past, Banner has struggled to keep himself from turning into the Hulk, but every time the angry green giant broke free, the scientist was able to turn back to normal soon after. However, Hulk’s sway has become so strong that Bruce lost control of his body for 2 years with no memory of what had happened. Despite his hesitation, Banner hulked out to help Asgard in their darkest hour. Will Hulk ever let the scientist out again? #3: Loki Has the Tesseract (Probably) The Tesseract is actually one of the six infinity stones: the space stone, which grants its user the ability to travel anywhere in space. Loki previously stole it from S.H.I.E.L.D. during the events of “The Avengers”. He was supposed to bring the stone to Thanos, but Earth’s mightiest heroes stopped him from making the delivery. It was then taken back to Asgard, where we see it once again when Loki heads inside the vault to initiate Ragnarok. It’s hard to believe Loki would leave the vault without stealing such a powerful item, and since Asgard was totally leveled, we doubt it’s just sitting there in the rubble. And since the giant ship we saw in the post-credits scene undoubtedly belongs to Thanos, Loki may have inadvertently delivered on his old promise. #2: An All-New Thor Aside from his name, everything we’ve come to know about Thor was basically changed by the time the credits rolled. For starters, his long hair gets trimmed by Stan Lee, and on top of that, he loses his right eye in his fight with Hela. His new look pays homage to both the eye patch wearing King Thor, and the short-haired Unworthy Thor, while creating a wholly unique new design. Aside from the cosmetic changes, he also had his hammer Mjolnir shattered by Hela. Fortunately, Thor learns to harness his lightning powers without his iconic hammer and looks more badass than ever. But Thor’s biggest change is his title. After Odin passes away, Thor clashes with The Hulk, Grandmaster and Hela on his journey to save his people. In the end, Thor overcomes every obstacle and is accepted as Asgard’s new king. #1: The Destruction of Asgard Odin was right from the start: Ragnarok cannot be stopped. Much like in the film, the comics version of Ragnarok is described as a cycle and is similarly destroyed by Surtur the Fire Giant, but Thor manages to put an end to the cycle, putting the fate of Asgard in his hands. Thor, now homeless, recreates Asgard somewhere in Oklahoma. After some disputes about territory and U.S. legal jurisdiction, Thor eventually reaches an agreement with Tony Stark to have the new Asgard treated as an independent entity. Could we see something similar play out in the MCU? After all, while the realm may be gone, Asgard is not a place, it’s a people - and those people need a new place to call home.
