#5: He Got Famous on MySpace
For those of you who are too young to remember, before Facebook and Snapchat and Instagram, there was a little social media network called MySpace. It was the type of place where certain users could rise in popularity, and even become famous, and that’s exactly how Jeffree Star got his start. He was one of the site’s first users, joining in 2003; and just a few years later, he had more followers than almost anyone on there. His androgynous look and brash personality drew people to his page and helped kick off his illustrious social media career.
#4: Kat Von D Helped Him Along the Way
In more recent years, anyone who followers the beauty influencer community knows that Jeffree Star and Kat Von D have had a pretty huge falling out. But back in 2007, Star actually appeared on the first season of “LA Ink” and the two became fast friends. They were both into cosmetics; and in 2008, Von D launched her own makeup line at Sephora and even named one of her lipsticks after Jeffree. She was then able to help her friend develop and create his own brand . . . and the rest is history!
#3: He Is Androgynous
So this may not seem like a surprising fact, but it’s important to identify Star in the way in which he chooses. Lately, issues of LGBTQQIA+ rights have been in the news, and it has become more and more common for people to let others know about their preferred nomenclature and self-identification. In Star’s case though, he simply identifies as Androgynous, and is open about his relationship with his long-term boyfriend. One of his most popular products is a range of cosmetics actually called the Androgyny Palette!
#2: He Has Had a LOT of Feuds
If you didn’t know him from MySpace and aren’t into watching beauty tutorials on YouTube, you’ve probably heard about Jeffree Star because of the many feuds he has had with other influencers, and even major beauty brands. We already touched on his issues with Kat Von D, but he has also had beef with Too Faced founder Jerrod Blandino, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and vlogger Laura Lee, among others. Some of his issues have come from giving brutally honest reviews of products, while others have been from defending his fellow influencers.
#1: He Made Very Troubling Racist Remarks
Feuds with celebs are one thing, but this type of controversy is of a totally different nature. After Star posted some negative comments about Kim Kardashian’s makeup line, her fans dug into his past to reveal some very racist comments he had made. Star tried to minimize the issue, saying that these comments were all made many years ago and citing the fact that we have bigger problems in today’s political climate. Despite his apology, he lost many fans and supporters due to this major reveal.
