The fourth entry in the series, Super Mario World is centered on the moustachioed plumber’s attempt to take a much-needed vacation.
Resting in Dinosaur Land following the freeing of the Mushroom Kingdom, players are informed that the Princess has vanished, and that it must be the work of Bowser.
Beginning your quest, players set off across seven worlds to defeat Bowser and his children, in order to restore peace and order to the land.
Building upon the gameplay of the previous Mario titles, Super Mario World has you navigate a large map in order to travel to numerous action levels and progress. Within each, you must face various obstacles and enemies by running, jumping, dodging, and using power-ups.
These power-up items include old staples, such as the “Super Mushroom” and “Fire Flower”, but include new objects, such as a cape, which allows Mario to fly for a limited amount of time. In addition, Mario can perform an all-new spin jump and ride Yoshi, his new dinosaur pal who has the ability to eat enemies.
Adding to the challenge is the ability to collect hidden Dragon coins. These are scattered around the world and will award you with extra lives.
And like previous installments in the Mario series, two players can take turns playing the game, with the second player in the role of Luigi.
Re-released several times over the years, Super Mario World has appeared on the Gameboy Advance, and the Wii’s Virtual console. Not only garnering a racing spin-off called “Super Mario Kart” and a unique sequel starring Yoshi, it introduced many of the iconic staples of the Mario universe, and is considered one of the finest entries in the long-running franchise.
