Rian Johnson Has “All The Freedom In The World” With New Star Wars Trilogy

What Awaits Us In A New Galaxy Far, Far Away?

Rian Johnson must feel like a kid in a candy store at the moment. Not only is he the man responsible for continuing Rey’s story in The Last Jedi, but he’s also been appointed to create a brand new trilogy of Star Wars films. The best part? He apparently has no limit on location, character, content or have to deal with any kind of studio interference. He has total free rein.

We’re pretty sure he’s living every fan’s dream.

According to an article on IGN

There’s no greater vote of confidence for director Rian Johnson’s work with Star Wars: The Last Jedi than the fact he’s already been announced as the director of a new standalone Star Wars trilogy set in a previously unexplored corner of the galaxy.

But just how much flexibility will he really have to “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored,” as the announcement of the new trilogy promised? Can this new series of films really extricate itself from the legacy of the Skywalkers? Johnson promises that is absolutely the intent.

“Right now there’s all the freedom in the world,” he told IGN while promoting Star Wars: The Last Jedi. “That’s the whole thing that’s exciting to me is let’s go some new places, let’s meet some new folks, let’s see what else is out there. Let’s have one story told over three films in this galaxy with no limitations. It’s pretty exciting.”

There are currently no announced release dates for the new trilogy, but don’t imagine they’ll be coming before the year 2020. After The Last Jedi, there’s the Han Solo standalone movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, hitting theaters in 2018, and then Star Wars: Episode IX, directed by Force Awakens helmer J.J. Abrams, hitting theaters in 2019. That means Johnson is presumably not heavily involved in the future of the core Star Wars prequels, which he credits with being part of the reason he got this new gig.

The man has proven to be a competent filmmaker, but we’re pretty sure that fans aren’t going to be sold on a new trilogy until they see The Last Jedi for themselves. If it manages to live up to the juggernaut that was The Empire Strikes Back, he’s bound to have everyone in his corner.
