If you’re a fan of 80s nostalgia and martial arts movies, then Kung Fury will hit you in all the right places. Directed by David Sandberg, this love letter to the kung fu genre was crowdfunded through Kickstarter, exceeding its $200,000 goal with a total of $630,019 pledged. The result was a hilarious and visually interesting short film complete with arcade robots, dinosaurs, and David Hasselhoff. Debuting at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Kung Fury found an even wider audience on YouTube.
The only downside is that Kung Fury missed its feature film goal of $1 million, hence why its only 31 minutes long. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long for more over-the-top carnage, as Kung Fury II The Movie is now in development. Here are three things you need to know about the project.
3. It’s Going To Be Feature Length
Where its predecessor was all too brief, this addition to the Kung Fury series is going all out with a full-length run time. In an 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sandberg stated, “weâve been developing with them for about a year a feature script, and we have a first draft. It needs some fine-tuning obviously, but I feel itâs a very good collaboration.” The film isn’t just going to recycle footage from the first film either with Sandberg describing it as a “clean slate.”
2. It’s Got A-List Talent Working Behind the Camera
Sandberg is getting the project off the ground with some assistance from producers Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg. Grahame-Smith is best known for writing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter while David Katzenberg has worked on nostalgic throwbacks like Stephen King’s It and ABC’s The Goldebergs. Now if only they could get Robert Rodriguez to crank the grindhouse element up to eleven.
1. It’s Got an Awesome Cast
David Hasselhoff is coming back for the Kung Fury feature film, but he won’t be the only big name this time around. Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender signed up for a role in February 2018 and the Terminator himself – Arnold Schwarzenegger – was cast shortly after. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Arnie will be playing the American president, which is fitting given his stint as the Governator.
