The early reactions to James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman movie are in and they bode well for the future of the DC Extended Universe.
A group of lucky fans were treated to a test screening of the film, which hits theaters on December 21, 2018. According to Batman-News, multiple sources “loved” Arthur Curry’s first standalone movie, praising its “action” and “emotional” balance.
So far two different sources told me they loved #Aquaman! Thereâs tons of action but itâs a very emotional movie as well.

Blogger Jeremy Conrad also noted on twitter that “you’re going to want to get your ticket immediately.”
People are DMing me asking me to not spoil big Aquaman story bits, and I wonât on Twitter. The movie isnât out until December.
But from the sound of things, if you loved Geoff Johnsâ run on the comic during the New 52 youâre going to want to get your ticket immediately.

While still proving financially successful, the DCEU got off to rocky start with Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, and Suicide Squad all being divisive at best. Wonder Woman turned things around for the struggling franchise, earning critical and box office success. Alas, all of the goodwill that movie built up couldn’t salvage the over-priced mixed bag that was Justice League. The DCEU has a lot riding on their upcoming projects, which makes the positive reception surrounding Aquaman especially encouraging.
Of course early reactions can only tell us so much about a movie’s quality. Twitter was buzzing with nothing but admiration for Batman v Superman at first. Once critics and audiences were finally given a chance to see the film, though, those positive early tweets were overshadowed by rotten tomatoes. That being said, there are some films that lived up to the hype. Star Wars: The Force Awakens received widespread acclaim on social media after its premiere and fans generally weren’t disappointed when it finally came out.
It’s also worth mentioning that the release date for Aquaman is still ten months away, meaning the version shown at the test screening could still endure edits, cuts, and reshoots. For now, we can take some solace in the optimistic early reactions and that Jason Momoa’s charismatic performance was a redeeming quality in Justice League.
