Joel Edgerton Discusses Potential Obi-Wan Kenobi Spin-Off

From Rose Byrne to Keira Knightley, the Star Wars prequels are full of performers who weren’t household names back in the day, but have since grown in prominence. Chances are you never noticed that the young version of Owen Lars is played by Joel Edgerton, who is known for his roles in movies like Warrior, The Great Gatsby, and Loving. Although Edgerton’s screen time in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith was limited, his role was definitely significant, as Uncle Owen would go on to adopt Luke Skywalker along with his wife, Beru.

The Globe Globe nominated actor recently spoke with Yahoo Movies about reprising his role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, which has been speculated to be in development with director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, Billy Elliot) involved. Here’s what he had to say:

“First part of your question is: could he come back? Yes. Should he come back? Maybe even more of a yes!”

Edgerton further stated, “I think me and Ewan [McGregor] and Liam [Neeson] in a movie is pretty good. Absolutely! I’d be totally down.”

Obi-Wan Kenonbi was played by Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars trilogy and Ewan McGregor portrayed a younger version of the iconic character in the prequels. When The Hollywood Reporter spoke to McGregor about an Obi-Wan standalone movie last January, he also expressed interest in returning.

“There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do,” McGregor said.

As of now, it’s unclear who Lucasfilm would invite back for the film, which still hasn’t been 100% confirmed. Until then, though, you can see Edgerton starring alongside Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow while McGregor will be playing the title character in Christopher Robin. We’ll also be seeing more of a galaxy far, far away soon with Solo: A Star Wars Story hitting theaters on May 25, 2018.
