You could argue that almost every Star Wars movie has been divisive to a certain extent, but few have split audiences down the middle quite like The Last Jedi. Whether you think it’s the best since Empire or the worst since the prequels, most people seem to agree that Supreme Leader Snoke was wasted. After being built up as the big bad in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi just killed him off without offering any backstory. According to actor Andy Serkis, though, Snoke’s origins may finally be told in a prequel film.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the motion-capture master stated, “We wanted him to have a great deal of mystery, but we did ⦠J.J. [Abrams] and I discussed it, and Rian [Johnson] and I did discuss backstories to him, where he came from. Iâve been asked to not shed anything, should we want to bring him back in any way whether [in a] prequel or whatever.”
While it’s unclear when or if we’ll ever get a Snoke prequel, the internet is loaded with theories regarding who he is and where he came from. One of the most popular theories is that he’s actually Darth Plagueis, the Dark Lord who could manipulate midi-chlorians. There’s also the popular theory that Snoke is Anakin Skywalkerâs father and used the Force to impregnate his mother. For now, however, he remains one of the biggest question-marks in a galaxy far, far away.
Even if this is the last we’ve seen of Snoke, there’s plenty more Star Wars on the horizon. Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25, 2018 and Episode IX is currently set to come out in 2019. We’re also getting multiple new trilogies from The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson and the showrunners behind Game of Thrones.
