Half Life fan-mods spawned a lot of great games which are very successful on their own nowadays, so it has to be on this list and in my opinion it also has to be ranked very high.

For this WC3 addon there are innumerable usermaps available Which are very different to the main game (not infrequently other genre than the main game) and each other and also very enjoyable to play.

Through plenty of mods Battlefield 2 has been improved in many points and made it more playable than ever, even against KI with a friend over LAN. Furthermore they added new mechanics, vehicles, weapons and an incredible amount of custom maps. I can't talk about this game unprejudiced, because it's one of my absolute favorite games. The reason for that is its timeless gameplay, look and sound, which additionally has been further improved trough its awesome community, which released some genius fan-patches. They also are very active and organized to this day on sites like moddb, Gametoast

I just have to say, that there are several recreations of other games as WADs besides of "normal" custom WAD-maps ...
