Top 10 Terrifying Giant Monsters in Anime

Huh, guess size does matter. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the top ten terrifying giant monsters in anime.

For this list, we’ll be looking at some of anime’s largest and most disturbing creatures to ever grace the screen. As long as they are larger than the average man, scare the crap out of us and leave a mountain of bodies in their wake, they’re up for consideration. As such, be on the lookout for some disturbing content and spoilers down the line.

#10: The Blue

“Blue Gender” (1999-2000)
Nothing warrants fear quite like a giant insect. As beings capable of absorbing organic and non-organic matter, these creatures rose up to become the new dominate species, forcing humankind to retreat to the stars. With their grotesque, insectoid features and heavy resilience, not even an army of mechs can take out the Blue with ease. They also have the nasty tendency to rapidly evolve, often leading to them acquiring new bladed features. Whelp, we don’t know about you but we welcome our new insectoid overlords…please don’t eat us.

#9: Goliath

“Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” (2015)
Bell might want to consider a career change. Sure, he’s the only mortal in service to the petite yet precious goddess Hestia, but is divine rookie worth tangling with a beast like Goliath? Like his namesake, this behemoth is an absolute monster who towers over all others, to the point where not even a full party of magic users can wipe the floor with him. With immense durability and strength, it takes the combined efforts of everyone just to land the killing shot. This is not a dungeon we’d want to visit again anytime soon.

#8: Zorc

“Yu-Gi-Oh” (2000-04)
Behold, the ultimate amalgamation of darkness, a being of such power that it singlehanded managed to take out Exodia the Forbidden One, the Blue Eyes White Dragon and even the Three Egyptian Gods. It’s capacity for destruction is untold, it nearly brought all of ancient Egypt to the edge of oblivion and…yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, he does have what appears to be a dragon for a crotch. However, the fact he managed to accomplish so much in spite of such hilarious phallic imagery makes him all the more fearful. Can you imagine looking up to see that thing swinging towards you?

#7: Awakened Beings

“Claymore” (2007)
And you thought that the Yoma were bad. While their lesser counterparts can still tear a human to pieces without much effort, the Awakened Beings are on a whole other level, mainly due to them being former Claymores who have lost control of their more bestial sides, the result turning them into gigantic creatures who also seek to devour human flesh, albeit on a much grander scale. Some are so powerful that mot even a full platoon of Claymores can bring them down. Just ask Rigardo; dude tore them up like it was going out of style!

#6: BETA

“Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse” (2012)
You can never go wrong with a classic alien invasion, especially if said invaders look like this. Vast in number and less than pleasant to behold, what these “Beings of Extra Terrestrial Origin” lack in superior intellect they make up for in the size, and the fact that they also seem to be bullet sponges. With a strange mix of crustacean and humanoid features, you’ll be sure to see these guys in your nightmares, if for nothing else that for each you slice apart, there’s another hundred to replace them.

#5: Ramiel

“Neon Genesis Evangelion” (1995-96)
It may be an Angel, but unfortunately Ramiel is the kind that likes to get right down to the smiting, to the point where it nearly put Shinji six feet under. Now you may be asking how terrifying a giant octahedron can be. Well, considering this one comes equipped with a devastating particle beam, we’d say quite a bit. Its cold, mechanical appearance design combined with its unyielding drive to complete its mission more than succeeds in inspiring dread. Sorry Shinji, seems like Ramiel brought a bazooka to a gun fight.

#4: Nosferatu Zodd

“Berserk” series (1997-)
Oh sure, there are plenty of apostles in this show to pick from, but none come even close to capturing the sheer ferocity and badassery that is Zodd the Immortal. Wandering from battlefield to battlefield in search of a worthy fight, Zodd finds himself a new nemesis in the form of the equally macho Guts. Of course, Zodd is beyond the strength of even the toughest of mortals, and that’s just in his hulking humanoid form. Just see what happens when you piss him off and he decides to let out his inner bull. What else is there to say except; kneel before Zodd!

#3: The Old Ones

“Blood-C” (2011)
Also known as the Elder Bains, these monsters live for only one thing; feasting on humanity, often in the most gory and visceral way possible. There are no shortage of these creatures, each committing some truly sickening acts during their brief screen-time by devouring all number of side characters. However, if we have to narrow it down to the monsters that left the bloodiest impressions on us, it would be Cerberus and the Bunnies. The former ripped apart a student apart in one of the most uncomfortable sights we’ve seen in anime, while the latter literally made human smoothies and kebabs with the poor residents of a town. That’s a bad way to go.

#2: Titans

“Attack on Titan” (2013-)
When it comes to knocking humanity off of the food chain, none do it better than these giants. While typically nothing more than wandering humanoids who happily digest humans any chance they get, we’ve recently seen that there are a few exceptionally dangerous versions that everyone behind the walls should truly fear. The Female, Colossal and Armoured have more than proven their worth as adversaries, so much so that not even Eren in his Rogue Titan form could initially best them. Oh, and the less said about the creepy as hell Beast Titan the better…

#1: Nurarihyon

“Gantz: O” (2016)
You can always count on this black ball to deliver when it comes to horrific monsters, which this latest movie adaptation of the Osaka Arc can more than attest to thanks to the portrayal of one particular creature. Say hello to the Nurarihyon, an alien being that will haunt you long after the credits roll. A true demon, this skull-faced beast is strong enough to take out a mech and resurrect itself several times over. Topping it all off, he comes equipped with laser eyes. Talk about overkill.
