“Nichijou” (2011)

She might suck at telling jokes, but this high school girl never fails to make us laugh. From a deer fighting Principal to the accidentally cruel kid professor, Nichijou boasts a quirky and memorable cast but, surprisingly, the funniest character is just a lazy schoolgirl. With an overactive imagination; Yuuko spends most of her time failing to make her friends laugh, finding new ways to not do her homework or study, and getting thrown out of class. This energetic girl is easily distracted and suffers from the worst of luck.

“Daily Lives of High School Boys” (2012)

Any one of the trio could have made this list...well, maybe not Tadakuni. He is way too plain. Although Hidenori comes off as self-righteous, the high school student is obsessed with the happenings of those around him and loves nothing more than to see the world from another perspective. Whether he is pretending to be Jack, an RPG NPC searching for the new demon lord, or reciting wind-based poetry to impress a girl; Hidenori’s behavior is always unpredictable, outlandish, and worthy of a good chuckle.

“Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo” (2003-05)

A master of the Hanage Shinken style, which literately translates to the fist of the nose hair, Bo-bobo is a somewhat goofy character. A master of disguise, this hulking hero’s personality changes depending on who he is talking to and the situation. One moment, he is stuck in a gruesome battle to the death with Czar Baldy Bald III; in another, he is pretending that Don Patch is his mother to steal a piece of his hair. Despite trying his darndest to seem cool and composed 24/7, the thin skinned Bo-bobo quickly throws a fit whenever he doesn’t get he wants.

“Mob Psycho 100” (2016)

The greatest psychic of the 21st century might be a con artist who manipulates his clients for money, but he has a good heart and believes everyone is born equal. Reigen serves as Mob’s sensei, as he tries to teach him how to control his powers and, more importantly, how to interact with other people. Although he has no powers of his own; Reigen’s strength lies in his ability to remain calm in any given situation, and an arsenal of special moves developed over years of extensive training.

“The Disasterous Life of Saiki K” (2016)

His peers might see him as a delusional spiky haired high school kid; but in reality, Shun is also the Jet-Black Wings and the world’s only defense against the evil organization known as the Dark Reunion. Okay, fine, we're humoring him. During middle school, Shun was extremely shy and struggled to make any friends. Deciding to change his image for high school, Shun developed a split personality as a coping mechanism for stressful situations where he has to meet new people. Despite being physically weak, the Jet-Black Wings is still willing to put his life on the line for the sake of others.

“Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto ” (2016)

Describing Sakamoto as perfect would be a gross understatement. Smooth as silk, he is every guy’s envy and god’s gift to women. Even when Sakamoto acts strangely, like performing a weird dance around a fire or getting into a sword fight against a bee, it merely adds to his mysterious persona. While most other characters are funny despite themselves, there is never a single moment when Sakamoto is not in complete control and oozing with charisma and style. When someone is as awesome as Sakamoto, he can even spare a moment or two to help out his normal schoolmates.

“Mr. Osomatsu” (2015-16)

Six for the price of one, the Matsuno brothers might have physically grown up but they are as immature as ever. A stain on society and a crippling financial burden to their hard working parents, the sextuplets are at their best when trying to make each other as miserable as possible. And they are great at doing just that. The group’s self-appointed leader; Osomatsu is arrogant, socially inept, and a gambler. Despite his embarrassing personality, he is probably the closest thing to normal out of the six brothers.

“Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei” (2007-09)

If nothing else, he is honest with his students. A high school teacher who likes to pass the time by attempting to commit suicide, Nozomu’s whole point of existence is to be as contradictory as possible – like wearing a kimono abroad but casual western clothes in Japan. With a catchphrase of ‘I’m in Despair!’, his pessimistic outlook on life exploded after he joined a ‘negative’ club during high school. Despite always saying the worst possible thing to his students, Nozomu inevitably ends up helping them after they misunderstand what he meant.

“One Punch Man” (2015)

With great power comes a whole lot of boring nights. Saitama is the strongest hero of all time, capable of one hitting any enemies who dare oppose him. His unassuming appearance and status as a C-class hero lead to most people underestimating his abilities before he shocks them with a single punch. Introducing himself as a hero for fun, Saitama yearns for an opponent capable of going the distance in a fight, just so he can feel the rush of battle again. Until that day, we’ll continue to laugh our asses off while Saitama no-sells his way through a fight.

“Gintama” (2006-)

Honestly, this entire list could have been made up of Gintama characters. If forced to pick only one, it would have to be the white demon himself. Lazy and addicted to pachinko, the eternally broke Gin-san founded odd jobs and is willing to do pretty much anything for money. With no sense of hygiene, this capable samurai serves as a mentor to the impressionable Kagura and Shinpachi; although most of his anecdotes are inspired by Shounen Jump and tend to make no sense. A child in a man’s body; Gin loves to drink sake and to stuff his face with sweets.
