#10: CEO of Mattel

“Barbie” (2023)

It’s quite remarkable that Mattel was okay with director Greta Gerwig skewering them in the “Barbie” movie. Gerwig accomplished this by casting Will Ferrell as the toy company’s CEO. In a movie all about examining gender norms, Ferrell represented the face of the patriarchy. Although known for more physical comedy and lowbrow humor, the boardroom scene allowed Ferrell to be more pointed. The actor was incisive, cleverly highlighting the gender disparity within the toy company, which markets its products to young girls, despite being almost exclusively run by men. His jokes were dry and smart, and delivered stinging social commentary through the lens of comedy.

#9: Blue’s Funeral

“Old School” (2003)

2003 was a great year for Will Ferrell. While many may remember that year for giving us the now classic Christmas movie “Elf,” it also delivered a standout Ferrell performance in “Old School.” The actor plays one of several adult friends looking to recapture their wilder youth - and save their buddy’s house - by starting a frat. The movie is full of classic Will Ferrell moments. In one memorable scene, for example, Ferrell goes into a fugue state to win an academic debate. However, it’s his relationship with elderly frat member, Blue, that steals the show. When Blue ultimately dies of a heart attack, his funeral is equal parts poignant and utterly ridiculous.

#8: Mayo Becomes A Crenshaw King

“Get Hard” (2015)

In “Get Hard,” Ferrell plays James King - a successful money manager who is set up as a patsy for financial crimes by his soon-to-be father-in-law. After he is found guilty, he hires his car washing expert, Darnell, played by Kevin Hart, to prepare him for prison life. However, despite what James King’s prejudice might suggest, Darnell knows just as little about prison as he does. As a result, his “training” is both silly and insane. In one scene, Darnell takes him to meet a local gang - the Crenshaw Kings - to gain protection. James unexpectedly leverages his financial skills to gain the gang’s confidence. He later joins them and earns himself a new name: Mayo.

#7: Endless Phone Calls

“Blades of Glory” (2007)

In “Blades of Glory,” Ferrell stars as Chazz Michael Michaels, a professional figure skater with an undying thirst for sex. Initially, he is pitted against Jimmy MacElroy, a self-taught skater played by “Napoleon Dynamite” star Jon Heder. However, after a confrontation gets them banned from the singles competition, Chazz and Jimmy are forced to collaborate and compete as a pair. When Jimmy sets his sights on Jenna Fischer’s Katie, Chazz teaches his new friend how to court her. Unfortunately, Chazz’s insatiable sex drive gets the better of him, leading to an awkward encounter that Jimmy witnesses. The following scene involves Chazz leaving Jimmy a series of comical and increasingly intimate voicemails.

#6: Chazz Reinhold

“Wedding Crashers” (2005)

“Wedding Crashers” is a comedy classic for most millennials, starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as friends who make a habit of crashing weddings to meet women. Though they’re both incredibly funny in the film, it’s Will Ferrell as yet another Chazz who steals the show. Chazz, who is the O.G. wedding crasher, becomes a mentor of sorts for Wilson’s character when he feels abandoned by his friend. At first, it seems unlikely that this middle-aged maniac who still stays with his mother could know anything about the pickup game. As it turns out, Chazz lives up to his reputation, and has even expanded his exploits by seeking out mourners at funerals.

#5: Buddy Confronts Santa

"Elf" (2003)

In “Elf,” Ferrell stars as Buddy, a human baby who hitched a ride with Santa and was raised as a Christmas elf. Now an adult, Buddy travels to New York City in search of his birth father. Armed with his own handmade elf “costume” and a wealth of Christmas knowledge, he secures a job at a department store. When the manager tells Buddy that he will meet the mall Santa, the elf is thrilled. His joy turns to anger, however, when he discovers that the mall Santa is not his old boss. The ensuing confrontation will go down as one of Will Ferrell's most iconic scenes.

#4: First Family Dinner

“Step Brothers” (2008)

“Step Brothers” is arguably one of Will Ferrell's best comedies, cementing his long-standing collaboration with John C. Reilly. They play a pair of grown men suffering from Peter Pan syndrome, each living with their respective single parents. When their parents meet each other and fall in love, the two step brothers initially become arch enemies, pranking each other and causing mischief. However upon realizing their common interests, their relationship transforms into a deep friendship. The several family dinner scenes are absolutely some of the funniest moments ever put to film. At their first dinner, the two see each other as heated rivals, but by the last, they are emotional wrecks after their parents announce their divorce.

#3: Ricky in Flames

“Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006)

“Talladega Nights” is another comedic gem from the Ferrell/Reilly duo. Ferrell plays the titular Ricky Bobby, a hilarious caricature of a NASCAR driver. There are too many incredible scenes in the film to pick just one. When Ricky Bobby and his family say grace, for example, they argue over which Jesus should be receiving their prayers (xref). But perhaps the most iconic scene takes place at the racetrack. Ricky’s fall from grace starts with an epic crash that sends his Wonder Bread car flying. Though he emerges from the wreck unscathed, Ricky - in his panic - thinks that he is on fire. His ensuing reaction is gratuitous, preposterous, and absolutely classic.

#2: Gator

"The Other Guys" (2010)

Though Ferrell often plays wacky characters, some of his best scenes are in movies where he plays a buttoned-up straight man. In “The Other Guys,” Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg star as a pair of B-level detectives hoping to solve a mysterious case. As Wahlberg reluctantly learns more about his straight-laced partner, he comes to realize that he is not as squeaky clean as he appears. In addition to somehow being a magnet for unbelievably attractive women, Detective Gamble had a shockingly dark past. As a nerdy college student, he accidently fell into the pimp game, and went by the street name “Gator.”

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004)

“Anchorman” is arguably the film that turned Will Ferrell into a household name. Chock-full of completely bonkers improvised moments, the film features the who’s who of comedy stars. In a movie where every scene is a classic, the phone booth sequence stands out as one of his best. Legendary news anchor Ron Burgundy is running late for work, and it’s his own fault. A chain of events beginning with an overindulgent burrito ends with Ron losing his seat to up-and-comer Veronica Corningstone. It’s wild, crazy, and puts the whole world into a glass case of emotion.
