Top 10 Underrated Rihanna Songs

Shakira pulled out all the stops for her lead single from her tenth studio album by bringing in Rihanna to feature on the track. The song was Shakira’s highest-debuting track ever in the United States and peeked at 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is the music video, however, that is the most memorable part of this song. The video features the two superstars looking their best, and earned the duo well over 500 million views. Featuring a reggae-rock that many have compared to the likes of The Police and Bruno Mars, we couldn’t be more pleased with what the Shakira-Rihanna team-up gave us.

#9: “Don’t Bother”
Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005)

Well known for her quirky and sometimes confusing lyrics, Shakira takes it up a notch on “Don’t Bother”. Singing about an ex-boyfriend who left her for another woman, Shakira claims that she would have been willing to move to a communist country, lose weight, and even learn about football to make him stay, although ultimately admits it wouldn’t have mattered. The video features a sexy scene of Shakira in the shower, followed by the Colombian singer showing off her guitar skills.

#8: “Dare (La La La)”
Shakira (2014)

Over the last decade, Shakira has essentially become the musical face of the World Cup, and the 2014 tournament was no different. Originally released as the third single from her self-titled English studio album Shakira, the song was reworked and released as the theme song for the 2014 World Cup, complete with new lyrics and a feature by Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown. A new music video was shot and featured cameos by a number of soccer stars, including Shakira’s Spanish boyfriend Gerard Pique.

#7: “Empire”
Shakira (2014)

The third song from her album Shakira to make our list, “Empire” was praised by critics, some of whom referred to the track as a gorgeous ballad. The song builds slowly until it reaches the epic chorus that highlights Shakira’s incredible vocal talent. While it never cracked the top 50 on the charts, many people believe that this song is the best on the album, with critics praising Shakira for the return to her rock roots.

#6: “Objection (Tango)”
Laundry Service (2001)

Although already a Latin star, this track allowed Shakira to cross over into the mainstream pop industry. The third single released from Laundry Service this was actually the first song she ever wrote in English. Writing this song also motivated her to improve her English so she could write even more songs, eventually being able to release her first ever album in the language in 2001. Critics praised the song, specifically focusing on Shakira’s ability to combine her classic pop and rock sound with tango.

#5: “Underneath Your Clothes”
Laundry Service (2001)

A soft rock ballad that tells the story of a woman’s unconditional love to her boyfriend, critics praised Shakira’s vocal range and songwriting for this multi-platinum selling single. Hitting number one in multiple countries, there’s no doubt that Shakira was quickly becoming a huge success worldwide, while the singer’s latin inspired vocals ensured that she was not leaving her Colombian roots behind. The music video actually received some criticism because it featured Antonio de la Rua, the son of the President of Argentina, who had resigned in the middle of political turmoil, which resulted in the sale of her albums being banned in Argentina.
