Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at the 10 Things to Know Before Playing “MultiVersus”! The latest platform fighter, “MultiVersus”, is shaping up to be a fantastic fighter for fans of games, movies, and television to pick up. After spending a little bit of time with the game ourselves, here are some things you should know before trying it out for yourself. Have you gotten a chance to play “MultiVersus” yet? Let us know in the comments below.

It Is & Isn’t a Smash Clone

On the surface, “MultiVersus” is very much another platform fighter, or as most folks would describe it, a “Smash Bros” clone. Yes, it is very similar to Nintendo’s brawler with its all-star roster of characters from various IPs and them bashing each other off the stage. However, there are key differences in the format that show a completely different game. For starters, the main attraction is in its 2v2 setup. Developer Player First Games is focusing heavily on team-based mechanics (which we’ll get to later) and letting players experiment with different match-ups. There is more depth here than what appears on the surface level, and we’ll go a bit deeper as we progress in the list.

A Warner Brothers Party

Another obvious observation is the distinct focus on IPs owned by entertainment conglomerate Warner Brothers. Indeed, the folks at WB own a lot of properties across movies and television, and whether you love their cartoons, comic books, or HBO shows, there’s a character to pull you in. From Batman and “Steven Universe” to “Scooby-Doo” and “Game of Thrones”, there is a character to reel in just about every fan. Along with the aforementioned properties, expect characters from “Rick & Morty”, “Looney Tunes”, “Tom & Jerry”, “Adventure Time”, “The Iron Giant”, and various DC Comics including Harley Quinn, Superman, and Wonder Woman. On top of that, there are several other characters that have yet to be announced but have been confirmed through leaks. Though, we won’t go over those in case some of you want to stay surprised.

Voice Cast

With this amount of legacy characters filling up the roster, one would hope that the game stays tried and true to the source material and pays respect to the characters. Just from the animations alone, Player First Games has succeeded in translating every character into a fighter, even Velma Dinkley. But one flaw that “Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl” suffered from at launch was the lack of character voices. “MultiVersus” immediately reassures its respect to the source material by hiring voice actors known for their respective roles. So, yes, John DiMaggio is once again Jake the Dog, Matthew Lillard is Shaggy Rogers, Eric Bauza, the current voice actor for Bugs Bunny, returns to play the wascally wabbit, and Kevin Conroy is Batman because he is the Batman we need, but not the one we deserve. Clearly, Player First and WB Games want each and every character to be correctly portrayed and are dishing out the big bucks to ensure this love and care.

Roster Updates

We’ll be the first to admit that the roster size isn’t as remarkable as other platform fighters including “Smash Bros” itself. So far, “MultiVersus” has revealed over a dozen characters, and as we said before, more will be revealed soon. If you don’t see a favorite in here, well, don’t let that deter you from playing the game. Player First Games has confirmed that they will continue support for the game well after launch, adding in even more characters down the road. With the positive buzz that has generated during its Alpha period, it may be safe to assume that “MultiVersus” could have a lengthy lifespan, and the beefy Warner Brothers catalog may help it turn into the next big free-to-play hit.

Modes

As we mentioned earlier, “MultiVersus” is focusing most of its efforts into the 2v2 mode. Partner up with a buddy or a rando and take on other online players. In case that doesn’t appeal to you and you prefer to play lone wolf, “MultiVersus” has you covered. Solo players can choose to compete in free-for-all 4-player fights or go toe-to-toe with a single opponent in 1v1. These two modes might make for a good testing ground to hone in your skills on each fighter’s abilities before diving into the main 2v2 mode.

Character Classes

With the focus being on teams and pairing characters, Player First has added some context behind the general feel for each character with a class system. This will help you understand what the character is like in the most general sense and may help you narrow down what kinds of characters you’re good with. Perhaps you’re great with Assassin-types like Harley Quinn or Arya Stark? Or maybe you’re great with tricky Mages like Tom & Jerry or Bugs Bunny? Why not try Tanks like The Iron Giant or a Bruiser like Taz or Garnet? Personally, I’m probably going to stick with a Support like Velma. (She’s too much fun to fight with!)

Team-Based Mechanics

So, there is a reason why Player First is trying to sell the 2v2 mode more than its other modes. “MultiVersus” is approaching this mode in a vastly different way than other platform fighters. See, the reason why character classes and match-ups are so important is because each character comes with an ability that’s usable by both players. For example, Bugs can dig underground, making a tunnel for him and his partner to use that allows safe passage to another part of the arena. Taz can lick his partner to heal them. Each fighter does something different and leaves the game open for players to discover new techniques, and it’s what makes every fight feel way more different and exciting than the last.

Cooldowns & Special Abilities

It’s important to note that “MultiVersus” is not going to allow players to spam certain abilities. Something you’ll discover very quickly is that certain abilities will be put on a cooldown. These abilities are usually a piece of the character that lets them gain the advantage quicker, whether that’s a buff, debuff, or special effect. “MultiVersus” wants you to mix up attacks and know when to use those abilities. It’s all about finding the right time to use them and make the most of your character’s role in the fight. Do you use it mid-combo, or do you wait until everyone is distracted? Figure it out, doc.

Online Functionality

One of the biggest concerns we’ve had in the fighting game community is, “How is the online play?” For years, we’ve been suffering from delay-based netcode, which does not always generate accurate matches and is more susceptible to lag. Thankfully, “MultiVersus” is utilizing a better method of online play: rollback netcode. This allows for a more stable match where inputs are way more accurate. Just this decision alone shows that Player First is indeed putting the player first, and it’s not just the casuals or the hardcore - it’s every player.

Launch

Now, the biggest question that everyone wants to know: when does “MultiVersus” launch? While the Closed Alpha we mentioned earlier has shut down as of May 27th, the game is aiming for an Open Beta launch in July 2022. Players will be able to finally play the game for themselves on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series XS. Sadly, there is no news of a Switch release, but we’re hopeful to see one before the game hits its one-year anniversary. “MultiVersus” is planned to make a full, version 1.0 launch sometime later in the year, and when it does launch, you’ll be able to download the game for free.
