10 Best Multiplayer Mods For Single Player Games

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we are spitting in the face of developer intention, and seeing if we can turn these single player games into coop gems. These are the 10 Best Multiplayer Mods for Single Player Games. Many have tried, but only few have managed to create experiences that ACTUALLY work. Let’s see who they are.

Teamruns

“Jak & Daxter” (2001)

Kicking us off is the multiplayer mod for the beloved PS2 single player gem, Jak & Daxter. Remembered fondly for its collectibles, dynamic worlds, and platforming, experience Jak & Daxter as Jak & Jak & Daxter... Or even Jak & Jak & Jak & Daxter. OR EVEN Jak & Jak & Jak & Jak & Daxter. The mod allows you to play through the game with others in a shared game world with interactable players. All of the in-game cutscenes that normally interrupt the game flow have also been modified to run in real time to work better with multiplayer. It’s a start to finish experience that offers wild levels of joy for you and your friends.

Oxide MP

“Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy” (2017)

Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy took the indie world by storm when it dropped in 2017. With every YouTuber and their mother building this game’s hype, as they tried to reach to top of the unbelievably hard to climb map, the game has become internet legend. Well, thanks to some clever folks, a mod by the name of Oxide MP was created, which allows you to play the game with as many friends as your system can handle. Climb, fall, scream, and rage quit, with your closest friends there to watch it all go down. What. A. Nightmare.

Quantum Space Buddies

“Outer Wilds” (2019)

The cult classic Outer Wilds has blown the minds of single player gamers the world over. With its deeply rich lore spread across its disgustingly enjoyable galaxy, the game has become something of a comfort for space loving gamers. The only problem? We can’t take our friends with us to explore these diverse planets, and learn the mysteries of the universe. That was until Quantum Space Buddies! Now admittedly, this is one of the harder entries on our list to get installed and ready to play (if you are a modding novice), but once you do, you can explore the universe and play the entire journey from start to finish with your friends. You only have one ship, which makes your journey tied at the hip, but for those (like myself) who’ve beaten the game, you’ll know this is the only way co-op should be handled.

Tomb Raider II Multiplayer Mod

“Tomb Raider II” (1997)

One of the most famous co-op mods for a single player game comes in the form of this mod that turns Tomb Raider II, into Tomb Raiders II... see what I did there? With up to 16 players, jump into this fondly remembered game and see just how much havoc you can cause with 32 pistols. A player vs player option is available as well! Simply click the “I don’t want to have close friends anymore” button and you’ll soon end friendships harder than the edges of Lara Croft's triangular bosom.

Skyrim Together

“The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (2011)

Much to our surprise here at Mojo headquarters, when researching all these mods to pick out the ones that aren’t either abandoned, filled with viruses, or simply just incomplete experiences, we never expected that what you’d think to be one of the most daunting and full-on games to make cooperative ended up being one of the MOST well made multiplayer mods on this list. Skyrim Together does what it says on the box, it allows you to play Skyrim... TOGETHER. Party up and complete the game as a team, or simply go do your own quests while existing in the same world as your friends. Be joined at the hip, or pass each other on horseback on a quiet mountain road once every 4 hours, it’s your choice!

S4MP

“The Sims 4” (2014)

The Sims 4 might not be the strongest entry in the Sims franchise, but it’s the only one with an outstanding multiplayer mod. This mod was made possible by the game’s already extensive online features. The result is a fun and chaotic experience where you can build houses together, start fires, get rich, or simply cause mayhem. And if you can’t work out the download process, simply ask yourself “Yen guir ming lorby yar yar yar?”, which is simlish for “why am I such a dipsh*t?”

Open.MP

“Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004)

Do you enjoy Grand Theft Auto V Online? Love teaming up with mates and causing absolute unending pain and suffering for helpless civilians? Well, how about we take that experience, and just move it over to the fondly remembered GTA San Andreas! Sounds good, right? With a bustling community, this online mod already has roleplaying servers that allow every job, from police to gun suppliers, to be handled by players. It’s LOADS of fun!

SM64 Co-op Deluxe

“Super Mario 64” (1996)

There is no better N64 experience than Super Mario 64. The worlds are varied and diverse, the gameplay is timeless, and the experience still holds up today. Now imagine, having a second player as Luigi, or a third player as Peach, or a fourth as Toad, or a fifth or a sixth or a seventh. SM64 Coop Deluxe takes the entire Super Mario 64 campaign and allows up to 16 players to enjoy it together. Adjustable skins, completely online, this thing is WILDLY enjoyable.

Seamless Co-op

“Elden Ring” (2022)

There’s been no more enjoyable Souls-Like game in the last 5 years than Elden Ring. Its world is open and its gameplay is addictive, with most players dedicating hundreds of hours to mastering its gorgeous world. With some co-op elements, the game appears to make co-op more draining than it’s worth. Well, look no further than the seamless co-op mod for PC players. With the mod, the entire campaign from tutorial to Erdtree is completely playable with friends by your side. Bosses get a slight difficulty increase to make the world still feel devastating, while the loot remains unshared, meaning you’d essentially be enjoying a single player style playthrough, were it not for your buddies making d*ck jokes in your ears.

Synergy

“Half Life II” (2004)

When it comes to beloved single player PC experiences, no game has a more beloved narrative and campaign than Half-Life 2, and now Half-Life 2, along with Episode One and Episode Two, can all be played in co-op thanks to the outstanding Synergy mod. The original games have aged impressively well, so if you're looking for a great reason to replay them, this is it. Fortunately, Synergy adjusts the enemy spawns when another player joins, ensuring the game's difficulty remains balanced in co-op. And if you're concerned about the vehicle sections, there's no need. Each player gets their own airboat, scout car, or muscle car. It’s as perfect as a co-op mod gets, and you need to try it TONIGHT!
