As the capital city of Sweden, Stockholm is full of historic attractions and beautiful architecture that speaks to the city's rich past. The Gamla Stan, or Old Town, is one of the most historically significant spots in town. Aside from housing the Swedish Royal Family's official place of residence, Stockholm Palace, it is also home to bustling city squares like Stortorget and harbor-front areas like Skeppsbron. The narrowest alleyway in the city is also found in Gamla Stan: the 35-inch wide "Alley of Mårten Trotzig" is actually quite a draw for tourists. ”The City Between the Bridges


Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, or Old Town, is an ancient part of the city that actually dates back to the thirteenth century. Until recently, it was known as “the city between the bridges,” due to its location.

Skeppsbron


Found in Gamla Stan is a street and harbor-front area known as Skeppsbron. This road offers beautiful views of the clear water and beautiful boats that float there.

Stockholm Palace


One of the most important buildings found on the stretch of road known as Skeppsbron is definitely the imposing Stockholm Palace. This is the Swedish Royal Family’s official place of residence, while Drottningholm Palace is their private dwelling. Stockholm Palace is one of the world’s largest royal palaces that is still used for this purpose with over 600 rooms. The palace is open all year to visitors who wish to see where the Royal Family conducts their official business. This site and its impressive courtyard are not to be missed while visiting Gamla Stan.

Alley of Mårten Trotzig


While walking around this area, its age can be seen throughout: medieval alleys are lined with cobblestone streets. The city’s narrowest alleyway is actually found in Gamla Stan: at its thinnest point, the “Alley of Mårten Trotzig” is only 35 inches wide.

Stortorget


Old-fashioned architecture is also present in the form of colorful buildings and bustling city squares. One such square is Stortorget. In fact, this is the oldest town square in all of Sweden. It truly is considered a centre for the city, as many of the important thoroughfares run from that area. Each year, countless tourists visit Stortorget to catch a glimpse at history.

Riddarholmen


Another nearby region that guests should visit is Riddarholmen and its famous church. The Riddarholmen islet makes up part of Gamla Stan, and also offers beautiful views of the clear water.
