This popular post-apocalyptic American TV drama is based upon the long-running 2003 zombie comic book series of the same name. Created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, it has since been carefully translated to the small screen by director Frank Darabont.

“The Walking Dead” made its debut on AMC in October 31st, 2010. Since then, it has received universal praise as a film quality television experience.

This post-apocalyptic series is focused on survivors fleeing and seemingly endless horde of undead zombies, referred to as “Walkers.”

Interestingly, while much of its plot and characters originate directly from the black and white comic source material, new plots, locations, characters and motivations have been added. This has helped the series appeal to both new and longtime fans, as both groups are left guessing as to what will happen next.

Like its source material, “The Walking Dead” is centered on the primary character of Rick Grimes. Played by actor Andrew Lincoln, Rick is a Sheriff’s deputy that awakes from a coma after being shot in the line of duty. Left behind in an abandoned hospital, he discovers that flesh-eating terror now lurks all around him, and that the world he once knew is gone.

Alone and surrounded by Zombies, Rick journeys to a rumored safe zone in Atlanta, determined to find his wife Lori and their son Carl.

Eventually reuniting with his kin, Rick fights to keep his loved ones safe, while re-uniting with his best friend and partner Shane, a fellow survivor who has grown a little too fond of his wife and kid in his absence.

Along the way, Rick becomes the leader of other survivors. These include characters adapted directly from the comic books. Among these are their scout Glenn, Andrea, an insecure woman turned hardened warrior, and Dale, a compassionate old man who serves as their moral compass.

They also befriend many characters created exclusively for the television show, including the muscular T-Dog and the crossbow wielding redneck Daryl.

One of the most appealing aspects of the series is that while Zombies are heavily featured, they are rarely made to be the primary source of the show’s drama. Conflict is instead frequently created through the characters, their interactions, and their complex relationships with one another.

“The Walking Dead” takes place in a world without hope, one in which nothing can be taken for granted. Within its episodes, the themes of human nature, morality and survival serve as a gripping backdrop for the intense interpersonal drama that unfolds.

That being said, his series is also not shy on the gore, violence and horror. It regularly kills its cast members, and even children are not exempt from its danger. This has made “The Walking Dead” AMC’s most watched and daring program.

It has similarly been nominated for various awards including a Golden Globe for Best Television Series Drama, while its ensemble cast has garnered various award nominations for their acting talents.

If you haven’t given this series a chance yet, you shouldn’t wait any longer. It regularly keeps you on the edge of your seat, and boasts television’s best acting, special effects, interesting characters and nail biting tension.
