Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for actors who have shared positive experiences regarding their participation in filming sex scenes. How would you feel about doing this kind of work? Let us know in the comments!
After becoming the second-youngest person to win an Oscar, Anna Paquin went on to star as Sookie Stackhouse on HBO’s popular vampire drama “True Blood.” Sookie falls for a vampire named Bill Compton, who is played by Stephen Moyer. And Stephen Moyer just happens to be Anna Paquin’s real husband. The two fell in love while filming the pilot and have been married since 2010. Would it be weird to film a sex scene with your own partner? Not according to Paquin. She told V Magazine that “it’s really not” that weird, saying, “When it's a love scene with someone you actually love… You know what your boundaries are - or what they aren't, I suppose.”
This English actress found success playing Daphne on the popular Netflix romance “Bridgerton.” Daphne is romantically linked to the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset, played by Regé-Jean Page. And when it came time to film the steamy scenes between Daphne and Simon, in came intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot. Phoebe Dynevor credits Talbot for making the love scenes a pleasant and untroubling experience. She told Glamour that they filmed the scenes “like stunts,” involving lots of practice and filmmaking trickery. She also credited Talbot with being a welcomed conduit between her and the director, as she wouldn’t have felt as comfortable receiving instructions from a male.
Don Draper is, shall we say, a bit of a sex symbol. Tall, handsome, mysterious, powerful - you can see why he had so many suitors. But it wasn’t “Mad Men” that gave Jon Hamm some pause. It was “Bridesmaids.” During an interview with Playboy, Hamm revealed that filming scenes with Kristen Wiig was kind of awkward owing to their size difference and the “weird flesh-colored thong” he was forced to wear. However, he also said that the two eventually just went with it, claiming, “All the awkwardness melts away and you think, ‘All right, we’re doing this, so let’s have fun with it.’” It certainly made a memorable opening scene, we’ll tell you that!
For her role as Annalise Keating in “How to Get Away with Murder,” Viola Davis added the Emmy to her EGOT. This means that she has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony! Davis is proud of the role, saying, “I saw it as an opportunity for a dark-skinned actress of 50 to be in a role that's sexualized, not sexy.” She told this to Tom Hanks during an episode of Variety’s “Actors on Actors.” She also went into some detail regarding the sex scenes themselves, saying, “If I'm in a sex scene…I want to say, ‘This is why I'm attracted to you, it's gotten to this point, this is what my body looks like.’”
While known for being Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose came into her own and made herself a star by playing Jocelyn in “The Idol.” And if you know anything about “The Idol,” you know that things get pretty darned heated. The HBO drama was ripped apart by critics, with many lambasting its lurid sexual content and the performance of The Weeknd. But the criticism didn’t bother Depp, and neither did the sex scenes. She told Vogue Australia that the role and its provocative nature “was really important to [her] and something that [she] was excited about doing.” She reportedly wanted to explore “a highly sexualized world,” and well, let’s just say she certainly did that.
“Orange Is the New Black” was an Emmy-winning prison drama filled with memorable characters played by excellent actors. And while its quality was highly regarded throughout its run, the show also became famous for its steamy girl-on-girl action. And there was a lot of it. Laura Prepon didn’t have a problem makin’ out with Taylor Schilling, telling The Huffington Post they “are so comfortable” with each other. Yael Stone didn’t have a problem either, which is good because her scenes can get quite graphic! She also told The Huffington Post that “the sex scenes are…a privilege” and that “[It's great] to be able to go into those private moments and try and be authentic.”
Before becoming a household name, Bradley Cooper starred as Ben in the cult favorite “Wet Hot American Summer.” Ben is a gay man in love with McKinley, played by Michael Ian Black. Cooper was very welcoming of the subplot and even provided some ideas for their physical interaction inside a shed. He told Esquire magazine that he gave some ideas to Black before shooting, one of which involved tube socks and a wall. Cooper later admitted to The Advocate that he was initially hesitant about taking on the role but quickly got over it. As he succinctly explains, “As long as the story is exciting, I'll do anything.”
Some actresses favor realism over comfort, and Shailene Woodley is one of them. In a cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, Woodley claimed that going topless is often necessary in depicting a realistic sex scene, rather than wearing a bra for modesty. She also spoke fondly about filming intimate sequences in general. She told the magazine, “I’ve never felt uncomfortable…because I’m very vocal,” as she often sits down with her director and co-star to discuss the scene in great detail. It’s always great to hear about an actress’s demands being respected and honored.
Throughout this list, we’ve discussed actors who aren’t afraid of doing sex scenes. But here we have an actor who actually loves it! “As any religious high schooler will tell you, simulating sex can be pretty damn enjoyable.” Those are the hilarious words of Mindy Kaling, star of shows like “The Office” and “The Mindy Project.” She goes into great detail in her book “Why Not Me?,” even devoting a whole chapter to the subject. The title of that chapter? “I Love Sex Scenes!” Kaling doesn’t even mind dozens of crew members watching her work. In fact, “the more, the merrier,” according to her. Kaling also calls filming sex scenes “the world's best job perk.” So yeah, you could say she enjoys it.
“A lot of my co-stars have been sexy guys my age… so why not?” Fair enough. Those are the words of Amanda Seyfried, who is also quite fond of the odd sex scene or two. The Emmy-winning actress spoke to W Magazine in depth about filming explicit sequences, stating rather honestly, “I'm not going to pretend it's not fun.” Seyfried was particularly fond of her time with Megan Fox on “Jennifer’s Body.” In the same interview with W, Seyfried claimed, “We kissed really well together… If I watch the scene, it's actually really sexy.” So there you have it. Seyfried doesn’t just like filming sex scenes - she enjoys watching her own!
