For this list, we'll be taking a look at all the fictional worlds that may seem alluring in their respective anime, but would be horrifying if they actually existed.
#10: Wired Earth – “Serial Experiments Lain” (1998)
With technology nowadays, people spend more time in virtual worlds than ever, however this anime completely blurs that line between the two. In the world of the “Wired”, a user can upload their whole consciousness into a digitalized network and can remain there, even after their physical body has wasted away. Inside this virtual reality world is a perceived “God” who hopes to turn the Wired into the new reality by supplanting all of human communication. And we thought social media was invasive.
#9: Ingary - “Howl's Moving Castle” (2004)
Most of us have, at one point dreamed of a world where magic existed, and besides, who wouldn’t want to live in a castle? The world of Miyazaki’s “Howl’s Moving Castle” is beautiful, so what’s the problem? Well, living in a place where you can get turned into a 90 year old woman by pissing off a powerful witch is a lot more fantasy dystopia than it is paradise. Magic in this world can be used for some pretty amazing feats, such as fuelling the mobility of a moving castle, but most of those who possess magic exploit the power and use it to for selfish desires and war.

When we think ‘afterlife’ most of us imagine a place where the souls of the dead find rest. But what happens to the souls of the restless? In the world of Bleach, these lost spirits turn into Hollows, monsters that sustain themselves on the souls of the living. Things got so bad that fighters from the spirit world known as Soul Reapers are sent to take care of these vicious creatures. However, watch out for Arrancar, Hollows that have removed their masks and become powerful enough to fight back. On second thought, it might be better to just stay indoors for this one.

Light seeks to use this power to reshape the world in his own image, punishing not only the wicked, but anyone who stands in his way. The result is a world held hostage, where every person alive, not just criminals find themselves puppets, fearing the wrath of a seemingly all-knowing, all seeing overlord named Kira.

This series shows us a world where Earth’s global superpowers are sucked into endless conflict after a destructive world war. This new world is divided into three major superpowers, the Holy Britannian Empire, the Chinese Federation, and the European Union. With the balance of power constantly shifting throughout the series, the world in in a constant state of turmoil and war, with totalitarian governments controlling their populations through fear and oppression. Imagine if the First World War never really ended, and became the new way of life.
#5: The World of Neo-Nazi Vampires - “Hellsing” series (2001-12)

When the Neo-Nazi organization Millenium reforms in England, they set their sights on world domination by creating an army of vampires and other hellish creatures. The only ones capable of putting a stop to the evil are Alucard, a vampire who swore his life to the Hellsing family, and his partner, Seras Victoria. The feud between Alucard and the Millenium is one that transcends World War II and Adolf Hitler's Third Reich.
#4: Zombie Infested Japan - “High School of the Dead” (2010)
Ok, unless your name is Bruce Lee or your family name is Norris, you probably wouldn’t survive the zombie apocalypse. When this particular outbreak hits present day Japan, the main characters find themselves trapped inside their high school, battling the undead corpses of their fellow class-mates. Once they do finally make it out of the building, they realize that their whole city is infected, and most likely the entire world. Armed with some very crude but effective weapons, these students fight for their lives in this new harsh reality.
#3: Post World War 3 Tokyo - “Akira” (1988)

Akira takes place in Neo-Tokyo in the year 2019, post World War 3. After being all but reduced to rubble, the city has been rebuilt into a dystopian society overrun by gangs and a corrupt government. Underneath this all thrives secret government projects including child imprisonment and experimentation. With overpopulation and limited resources, anarchy doesn't even begin to describe the rule of this world.
#2: Earth After the Second Impact - “Neon Genesis Evangelion” (1995-1996)
The Second Impact was a cataclysmic event; the disastrous result of a scientific experiment gone wrong. A huge explosion in the South Pole caused a shift in Earth’s planetary alignment, resulting in instantaneous climate change and the death of over two-billion people. Oh, and it gets worse. Monstrous beings called Angels, awoke from somewhere below Earth’s surface and began to attack Tokyo. Ensuing battles against the Angels leads to unavoidable destruction.
