We were all Lego Maniacs at some point in our lives. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 Lego Themes. For this list, we’ve considered the best series of play sets made with the literal building blocks of creativity. Sadly, we won’t be looking at themes like Bionicle and DUPLO since they aren’t made with typical Lego bricks.

So this is a toy, based on a movie, based on a toy? Everything about this set is awesome! Given the popularity of the construction toys, a feature film only made sense, and it showed audiences just how creative and entertaining a flick about these colorful bricks could be. Naturally, Lego wasted no time releasing sets based on the film featuring their most memorable characters and imaginative creations… yes, even Emmet’s double-decker couch has a set! As if that weren’t enough, TT Fusion Ltd released a “Lego Movie” videogame so players can interact with and experience the movie firsthand. Gamers can join the movie characters on more adventures in the toys-to-life game “Lego Dimensions,” while moviegoers can enjoy the film’s upcoming spin-offs. But of course, the Lego sets are where it’s at.

Ninjas and Legos: they just fit well together. Lego has produced ninja-themed sets in the past, but Ninjago stands out thanks because it combines both Japanese and Chinese cultures with cutting-edge technology. Another advent is the Spinjitzu spinner game, where two minifigures on top of spinners battle to try and knock their opponent out. What ultimately drives this theme to popularity, however, is the animated series, “Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu,” which follows a group of teenage ninjas as they protect their world from evil. Though the short-lived Legends of Chima theme was planned to replace Ninjago, these ninjas survived and thrived beyond the Legos with video games and a 2017 feature film.

One of the oldest core themes brings us back to medieval times. Starting out the theme was one of its most recognizable sets – the Yellow Castle, or the “Original Castle,” if you’re a diehard. From then on, the theme and all its factions delved deeper into the fantasy world of old – not just with castles and knights, but also with marketplaces for peasant folk. The Castle theme also came with new features, like fully armored minifigures, ghosts, and horse-figures. The theme is kept alive today through the subtheme, Nexo Knights – and its Cartoon Network animated series.

Like Castle, Space is one of the oldest core themes in the Lego world. This theme allows builders to explore what’s beyond Earth, including astronauts, spaceships, robots, and – of course – aliens. Lasting thirty-five years from 1978-2013, Space has become one of the most expansive themes in the Lego universe thanks to its multiple subthemes – one of which included Lego’s first crack at the “good guy versus bad guy” grouping, pitting the Space Police against the Blacktron. The Renegade, Blacktron’s ship, helped raise the bar for future spacecraft kits by dividing into smaller units. The Lego Space theme would only grow bigger with the addition of some of the most unique and out-of-this-world alien creatures – not all of them friendly.

Ever wanted to build the worlds of the DC and Marvel heroes? Well, now the Super Heroes theme gives you the chance. Starting with Batman, Lego started to expand the DC universe with every other DC hero; featuring sets that followed the comics, Extended Universe films, and a much-appreciated tribute to the Adam West iteration. Not long afterwards, Marvel was brought into the Lego world with kits based on the MCU films and TV shows, featuring all your favorite Marvel heroes in some iconic adventures. Both sub-themes successfully spawned two acclaimed video games each and a series of entertaining short films – along with a feature film for a certain caped crusader.

This theme proves that Lego is built on the creativity of all who use it. The Lego Minecraft set was made after the idea suggested on the Lego Ideas tool, where users submit their own ideas for sets that COULD end up on store shelves. After the first set’s success, a whole range of micro world sets followed. Both micro and regular sets offer builders the fun building experience that the video game is known for – familiar characters included. In addition, the regular sets offer loads of rebuild-ability, with four scenes possible when re-connecting the sets, and the newly introduced Micro Mob figures. It’s amazing what the power of a fan base can accomplish.

With the success of the movie franchise based on the popular book series, it was only a matter of time before Lego jumped on the “Harry Potter” bandwagon. Each set features an iconic scene or location from the wizarding world – including the iconic Hogwarts Castle. The sets and “Lego Creator” computer games were released to coincide with each new movie, until 2007 when the theme was temporarily discontinued. Of course, with the announcement of the final movies, more Harry Potter sets were released along with two console videogames playing through the whole saga. Though the theme has sadly been discontinued, fans can still enjoy the Lego-styled wizarding world through “Lego Dimensions.”

Let’s go back in time to the 1980s, when brick buccaneers fought against soldiers and imperial armadas – and indigenous locals – for control of the sea – and of course hunted for buried treasure. Along with impressively constructed ships and scenery, the pirate theme brought something new: customizable faces that ventured past the simple smile to include beards. And what would a swashbuckler be without a gun? To boost the theme’s popularity, a comic was released the same year to provide background to the main characters. After a hiatus in the late 90s, the theme has made several returns, reintroducing the theme with new and exciting sets – including a chess set.

Imagine being able to create an entire city out of nothing but bricks, with vehicles, civilians, and landmarks galore. Further developing the urban-centered Town theme, Lego City was created to continue adding to the brick-made metropolis. And it’s not just limited to rescue services like police; City has expanded to include airlines, trains, construction vehicles, and even farms. In addition to its versatile sets, the City theme also spawned several 2-5 minute webisodes, and two story-driven video games that follow the adventures of Lego City cop, Chase McCain. The City theme adds more than enough to the ever-growing Lego world for people to construct whatever they can imagine. This theme is a sci-fi fanatic’s dream: like, can you imagine being able to build the entire “Star Wars” universe in Lego??? The first IP ever licensed by Lego, the Star Wars theme includes spaceships, iconic locations, and literally every memorable character throughout the franchise across over 230 sets. The subthemes not only follow the main films, but the animated series and even the expanded universe as well. Several comedic short films have also spawned from it, as have many video games that allow players to relive the franchise’s magic with entertaining Lego twists.
