#10: “Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)”
Insomniac (2007)
On the surface, this love song has that classic Enrique charm with lyrics of unrequited love and birds flying south, however it’s the song’s title and music video that made it commercially viable. For the beat, “Do You Know” features a sample of a ping pong ball, while the chorus will be stuck in your head for weeks to come. In the video for “The Ping Pong Song,” a creatively-challenged director presents Enrique with a few conceptual ideas, but in the end, all Mr. Iglesiascan say is “Este cabrón está loco,” or “this f**ker (bleeper) is crazy.”
#9: “Addicted”
7 (2003)
In the early days of Enrique Iglesias’ English-language musical career, he developed a reputation as the ultimate Spanish lover, but given that “Addicted” never charted on the Billboard Hot 100, the blunt opening line must have turned off Americans. Before listeners even know what’s going, Enrique is already singing about his crippling addiction to his lover. Ok, the video is a bit more poetic than the lyrical foundation, as the Peter Berg-directed production has the singer opposite Mischa Barton and looking to break loose from a literal prison. All in all, “Addicted” is a romantic tale of unhealthy obsession.
#8: “Rhythm Divine”
Enrique (1999)
And…classic Enrique Iglesias opening whispers in 3…2…1. For his English-language debut album, young Iglesias infused a little Espanol in a song in which he essentially stalks an unknown woman all over the world. And as the music video proves, Enrique is one fortunate soul that can get away with it – all in the name of the “Rhythm Divine.” Despite the invigorating nature of the lyrics, and his enthusiastic vocals, Iglesias would ultimately find out that he was chasing his lover out to sea. As a stand alone song, however, “Rhythm Divine” is musical ecstasy.
#7: “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)” feat. Ludacris and DJ Frank E
Euphoria (2010)
All right, Mojoholics, if you know the REAL title of this club banger, you already know that it’s actually less about lovin’ and more about something much more R rated. And hey, when you have a fresh rhyme from Ludacris, the whole package makes for a good time on the dance floor. With that being said, it’s probably a good idea to refrain from playing this song on a first date unless your ambitions are high. Overall, this track allowed Enrique to have some fun, albeit in a raunchy way, which is only proven by the track’s music video.
#6: “Escape”
Escape (2001)
Thus far, we’ve offered you playful Enrique, addicted Enrique, obsessed Enrique, blunt Enrique and now we give you stalker Enrique. All joking aside, we should all be thankful to Mr. Iglesias for the dynamic vocals and thumping beat of “Escape,” and of course, the cameo by Anna Kournikova. That in itself propelled “Escape” directly up the charts, as it was this song that announced the formation of a Spanish-Russian power couple, and propelled Enrique to international superstar status.
#5: “I Like It” feat. Pitbull
Euphoria (2010)
First thing’s first: this electropop chart topper was the first single off the “Jersey Shore” soundtrack, so that’s all you really need to know. With a simple message and play on Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long, “I Like It” became one of the year’s biggest hits, and when you throw in some Pitbull, you damn well know it’s going to be a Top 10 hit. In the music video, Enrique displayed his table slide moves, while Pitbull himself sported his classic suit and club-appropriate shades combo.
#4: “Bailando” feat. Sean Paul
Sex and Love (2014)
For his Spanglish party anthem, Enrique Iglesias hit the streets for one of several versions of the song and had some good ol’ fashioned fun. “Bailando” was originally recorded by Cuban reggaeton artist Gente de Zona, but it was his collaboration with Iglesias that led to three Latin Grammy Awards. Of course, with the Jamaican artist Sean Paul featured on the Spanglish version of the track, “Bailando” became a beloved dancehall hit around the world.
#3: “Be With You”
Enrique (1999)
As the second #1 hit Billboard hit for Enrique, this was also the song that helped put him on the map as an international pop star. Fresh off the success of “American Pie,” Shannon Elizabeth appears in the music video, and while Enrique does seem to over perform just a tiny bit, the overall heat of the production had students booking plane tickets for summer excursions to all Latin corners of the globe. Youthful, sexy and fun, “Be With You” has an undeniable power to make listeners party.
#2: “Bailamos”
Enrique (1999)
If our #3 entry helped people get loose, this track from the album had listeners dancing for their lives – or so Enrique would have you believe. In the opening verse alone, the stakes of “Bailamos” are set, and when this song dropped in the club, everybody put on their dancing shoes and let the music take over. By combining the English and Spanish languages, Iglesias kicked off his English-language debut in style, and it wasn’t long until he achieved his first #1 Billboard hit. The late 90’s was in a latin pop craze with Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” but “Bailamos” offered a little more soul and demonstrated that Iglesias would likely be more than a one-hit wonder.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
“Love to See You Cry”
Escape (2001)
“Dirty Dancer” with Usher feat. Lil Wayne
Euphoria (2010)
“Heartbeat” feat. Nicole Scherzinger
Euphoria (2010)
“Don’t Turn Off the Lights”
Escape (2001)
“I Like How It Feels” feat. Pitbull & The WAV.s
Sex and Love (2014)
#1: “Hero”
Escape (2001)
Passion. Desire. Romance. By 2001, Enrique Iglesias was a worldwide force in pop music, and upon the September 11th attacks on America, this gentle ballad took on a whole new meaning. In fact, “Hero” was released just eight days before 9/11, and Iglesias performed it live at the “Benefit Concert America: A Tribute to Heroes.” Looking back, the vocal whispering and music video featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt may seem cheesy to many, but in reality, “Hero” is directly correlated to a momentous time in history, regardless of where you’re from. With a simple twist of fate, this song became the most important release in the career of the Enrique Iglesias.
