Top 10 Fictional Movie Nazis

They may be mad about Hitler… But they're mighty memorable characters! In this video, http://www.WatchMojo.com counts down our picks for the top 10 fictional movie Nazis! For this list, we've looked at all Nazi characters that have been specifically created for the cinema. Contenders cannot be depictions of a real life Nazi, and we've also ruled out those who appear in TV only.
Special thanks to our users Daniel Landers, Lucky 70 Movies Musi, Andreas Philippou, KiltWearingWarrior, Andrew A. Dennison and dagwood525 for submitting the idea on our Suggestions Page at WatchMojo.comsuggest
#10: Rolfe
“The Sound of Music” (1965)
A telegram delivery boy turned treacherous Hitler fan boy, Rolfe’s role is a peripheral one in “The Sound of Music,” but it’s crucial. He and Liesl von Trapp look to be seriously star-crossed at the beginning of the movie, but he soon turns fascist, and very far from friendly! Upon discovering the von Trapp’s and their hiding place, Rolfe has a simple decision to make; Will he help his one-time love and her family, or will he hand them over to the Third Reich?
#9: Franz Liebkind
“The Producers” (1968)
At nine we have a Nazi who’s so infatuated by the Fuhrer that he’s put pen to paper, and he’s got the paper into production. With a name that comically translates as Frank Lovechild, Liebkind has been laughably led astray by all things Adolf Hitler! ‘Springtime For Hitler’ is an effective love letter to the tyrant, and Liebkind can’t believe his luck when Broadway beckons… The stage is set, the audience is seated, but will Nazi Germany make for a good night at the theatre?
#8: Arnold Ernst Toht
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981)
A ruthless Gestapo interrogator, this guy only has eyes for the Aryan! Toht’s sent on a mission to locate the eponymous ‘lost ark’, and he’s hell-bent on doing exactly that! Sporting a sadistic look, in line with the rest of his black character, Toht’s trademark fedora and leather coat combo is almost as iconic as Indy’s own outfit! He doesn’t believe in the supernatural aspects of the mission he’s been set, but he does believe in Nazi law - and that is very bad news!
#7: Arthur Case
“Inside Man” (2006)
Founder of the Manhattan Trust Bank and chairman of its board of directors, Case controls much of New York’s money. He’s a philanthropic man, though… So much so that no one would suspect his past. The truth is that he made money through his partaking in Nazi war crimes, and though he has remorse, he’s been reveling in ill-gotten wealth ever since! Played by Christopher Plummer, the character’s way crueler than the average, and far cleverer than the police!
#6: Kurt Dussander / Arthur Denker
“Apt Pupil” (1998)
It’s hard to decide who is more evil in our next movie: the historic Nazi, or the would-be one! Ian McKellen plays Arthur Denker, aka Kurt Dussander, a former SS soldier who is hiding from his past. Brad Renfro plays Todd Bowden, a high school student with an unhealthy obsession with the Holocaust. When the latter discovers the former’s true identity, a chain of blackmail is set in motion and the consequences are not good… For anyone involved…
#5: Dr. Christian Szell
“Marathon Man” (1976)
Laurence Olivier would perhaps not be cast by most people to play a Nazi, but John Schlesinger made that unusual, excellent call for “Marathon Man”! Diamonds are this bad guy’s best friend, and Christian Szell will double, triple and quadruple cross to keep them! A doctor of death in his past, and the most dangerous of dentists in his present, Szell merges medicine with malevolence to take down Dustin Hoffman, and everyone else in his way! There is no remorse in this ruthless war criminal!
#4: Johann Schmidt / Red Skull
“Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011)
Only the most violent and villainous of fascists make it into Hitler’s inner circle, and Johann Schmidt manages to do that with unerring ease. Quickly discontented with the Nazi way of doing things, though, he sets up HYDRA as an alternate SS, and oversees the development of a Super Soldier Serum designed to give the user extra strength and speed. Upon taking his dose, however, the unattractive side effects inflate Schmidt’s skull and turn it blood red. He’s not handsome, but he is hate-filled!
#3: Dr. Strangelove
“Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964)
Peter Sellers plays the criminal and the comedian with every ounce of class as Dr. Strangelove, the wheelchair-bound one-time Nazi who now works as an adviser to the American president. It’s a murky world of post-war politics in Stanley Kubrick’s movie, but Sellers brings out a lighter side amidst the seriousness and suspicion. And, his uncontrollable right hand turns a universal symbol of hatred into a snigger-worthy side-joke… Somehow!
#2: Derek Vinyard
“American History X” (1998)
There is no mistaking this man’s political sympathies – while others wear their hearts on their sleeves, Derek Vinyard wears his hatred boldly on his chest. A huge, heavy swastika tattoo is emblazoned proudly on his left pectoral, making his neo-Nazi roots impossible to deny. When Derek finds himself in prison and disillusioned by his fellow fascists, however, the symbol on his skin begins to weigh him down. He’d like another chance in life, but he can’t escape the hate!
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
- Ilsa
“Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS” (1975)
- Adenoid Hynkel
“The Great Dictator” (1940)
- The Illinois Nazis
“The Blues Brothers” (1980)
- Andrew ‘Combo’ Gascoigne
“This Is England” (2006)
#1: Hans Landa
“Inglourious Basterds” (2009)
You have to hand it to Hans Landa: he’s the nastiest Nazi out there! A sadistic, opportunistic, psychopathic soldier, Landa, or ‘The Jew Hunter’ as he is forebodingly known, is Quentin Tarantino’s answer to atrocity personified! A role that would garner Christoph Waltz his first Oscar, the character is frighteningly fierce with his victims, sickeningly self-assured in himself, and unnervingly apathetic about his actions. All these guys are bad guys, but Landa takes the villainy to another, Academy Award winning level!
