Top 10 Games That Fans Hated Before They Were Even Released

We didn’t even give these games a chance. Oh well, they probably deserved it, anyway. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top ten games that fans hated before they were even released.

For this list, we’ll be looking at those video games which fans instantly despised for whatever reason, despite the game not having been released yet, whether it be franchise fatigue, a poor trailer, or anything which would have made the community upset. It doesn’t matter if the game eventually redeemed itself or turned out good – we’re only focusing on pre-release hate and backlash.

#10: “Left 4 Dead 2” (2009)

Valve had a major hit on their hands with 2008’s “Left 4 Dead,” as it was perfect game for anyone who wanted to shoot zombies with their friends. However, a sequel was shown the very next year at E3, and oh boy, did fans not like it! Users “Agent of Chaos” and “Walking_Dead” put a boycott in place and a Steam group was created to gain support. The group claimed that the game’s characters and visuals were not “Left 4 Dead-y” enough, and that the game would take attention away from the original. This community instantly dissolved once DLC was released for the original, claiming that they had “accomplished everything.”

#9: “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate” (2015)

The “Assassin’s Creed” series was a bit of a roller coaster ride for a while there; people were disappointed with the third instalment, then they loved “Black Flag.” And then “Unity” was released, which destroyed all the hopes and dreams of the franchise. After “Unity’s” abysmal showing, franchise fatigue had finally set in for this once-great series, and “Syndicate” came and went without any enthusiasm, especially considering it’s been-there-done-that setting of Victorian London. Despite it recovering rather well due to positive word of mouth, it had an extremely disappointing launch, as everyone was simply done with the series and it’s re-iterations of old mechanics.

#8: “DmC: Devil May Cry” (2013)

If there’s one thing we learned from this controversy, it’s this: do not mess with a beloved Japanese franchise. In order to reach a wider audience and boost sales, Capcom decided to reinvent Dante and the series as a whole, and fans were less than thrilled at the result. After the launch trailer at the Tokyo Game Show, fans immediately complained about Dante’s emo appearance and re-vamped, less that favourable personality, and on top of that, fans cried outrage because “DANTE DOESN’T SMOKE!!” In the end, it sold even worse than “Devil May Cry 4.” Oops.

#7: “Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric” (2014)

As if the Sonic fan base wasn’t fractured enough …While Sonic fans absolutely love to complain about how the newest game isn’t like this “Sonic Adventure” or how this new mechanic sucks, etc. etc., the response to “Sonic Boom” was particularly scathing. Fans complained about a myriad of issues, including how the graphics were lame, how crappy the camera angles were, the cheesy dialogue, and how jagged and poor the game seemed to run…all from the trailers alone. If that wasn’t enough, the game was not given to critics, which is never a good sign. Turns out, it wasn’t.

#6: “Mass Effect: Andromeda” (2017)

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The “Mass Effect” series was once a industry giant, but Andromeda just didn’t live up to the hype. While some fans remained cautiously optimistic for “Andromeda,” their hopes were soon crushed, and all over some silly faces. Once first impressions of the game began wheeling in, fans immediately pounced on the ridiculous facial animations, creating memes and videos poking fun at the ugliness of the models. While the combat was fast-paced and interesting, the story and narrative choices – you know, the series’ main draw – felt unfinished and lacked any sort of depth.

#5: “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” (2003)

It seems odd to criticize an entry in what is arguably the greatest video game series of all time based purely on first impressions, but gamers were certainly sceptical after “The Wind Waker” was revealed. Complaints immediately poured in regarding the game’s aesthetics and cel-shaded design, as many people called it childish, fearing that the game would be too kid-friendly. And, as is always the case with newly introduced “Zelda” games, fans took offense at the series’ new mechanics, criticizing the focus on water-based movement and gameplay, claiming that it wasn’t a “true” Zelda game. Even to this day, opinion remains fiercely divided.

#4: “Metal Gear Survive” (2018)

OK, seriously, whose idea was it to turn “Metal Gear” into a zombie shooter? This game follows the events of “V,” wherein Mother Base and the “Militaires Sans Frontières” are sucked into a wormhole and find themselves in a land full of crystal zombie things. Well, suffice it to say that fans immediately hated, hated, HATED this idea, as they saw zombies as a huge insult to the respected series, while many saw it as a simple cash grab to profit on the (now dying) zombie craze. So, is anyone else looking forward to “Death Stranding?”

#3: “Mighty No. 9” (2016)

After making truckloads of money through Kickstarter with the promise of a beautiful spiritual successor to the “Mega Man” series, fans’ expectations began to wane when the game was delayed over and over again. And then that infamous Masterclass trailer was released, and the rest is history. Many people felt that the trailer not only missed its mark by taking the “we’re totally wacky, fellow kids!” approach, but some also felt the jokes were flat-out disrespectful. With the constant delays, disappointing-looking gameplay, and stupid trailer, fan expectations plummeted.

#2: “Metroid Prime: Federation Force” (2016)

How to completely lose the trust of your fan base in 3, 2, 1…During E3 2015, 8 long years after the release of the last “Metroid Prime” game, the trailer for “Federation Force” was revealed. Rather than a new first-person adventure with Samus, fans were instead treated to a spin-off game with cartoonish character designs and a major tonal shift. The trailer was immediately bombarded with dislikes on YouTube, and a petition was even created to cancel the game. But with the announcement of “Metroid Prime 4” at E3 2017, it seems like Nintendo heard the fans loud and clear.

#1: “Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare” (2016)

We can picture the business meeting for this one going something like: “Ok, I’ve got it…Call of Duty…in space!” “Genius.” Fans were immediately disgusted with the reveal trailer, mainly citing the game’s ridiculous sci-fi setting. The video currently stands at over 3.5 million dislikes on YouTube. Other factors also went into the pre-release hate, including the fact that a remastered “Modern Warfare” would be packaged with the game and wouldn’t be sold separately and its recycling of game mechanics, including supply drops and kill streak rewards. The game itself turned out to be your standard Call of Duty game, but there was nothing standard about the hate storm that preceded its release.
