#10: Snake is tortured
“Metal Gear Solid” (1998)

In this scene, Solid Snake, is being held by Liquid for an interrogation conducted by Revolver Ocelot in order to gain information on how to activate the Metal Gear Rex’s nuke using the DARPA chief Donald Anderson’s Permissive Action Link. Even under the fourth wall breaking torture and the threat to kill Meryl if he didn't want to cooperate, Snake still doesn’t spill the beans – as long as you don’t let him. After the session, he wakes up in a cell with the DARPA chief’s long dead corpse, making the player realize how bad the torture device really is.

#9: Return to Shadow Moses
“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” (2008)

Ten years after the original release of the first Metal Gear Solid game, Hideo Kojima decided to put a lot of nostalgia into the last chapter of the Solid Snake story for fans, and it shows. Just before arriving at the location, players are treated to a sort of dream sequence where they get to play an emulated version of their first visit to Shadow Moses on the PS-one. Then they arrive and snap out of it, revealing how far the series has come as you get to play through the same section in full HD. A love letter to long time fans, the amount of nostalgia packed into the section is staggering.

#8: Big Boss’ death
“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” (2008)

Appearing right at the end after Solid Snake’s suicide attempt, Big Boss is revealed to be alive, and then proceeds to explain the Snake and the player the truth behind Liquid Ocelot, The Patriots and Zero. After the stream of exposition comes to a close, Big Boss tells Snake that the FOXDIE virus inside of him has been activated by Snakes presence. Knowing that he would die soon, he salutes The Boss one last time and dies beside her grave, making peace with himself and his last living son.

#7: Gray Fox’s death
“Metal Gear Solid” (1998)

Gray Fox, also revealed during the game to be Frank Jaeger, is a cyborg ninja and a former partner of Solid Snake. Near the end of the game, he helps Snake fight Metal Gear, revealing during the scene that he was involved in Naomi Hunter's parent’s death and asking Snake to tell her the whole truth. After being severely injured by the Rex, Fox spills the beans about Zanzibar and dies with honor under the Metal Gear's feet. His last words: ''At least I always fought for what I believed in''.

#6: Naked Raiden
“Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty ” (2001)

Nobody wants to get caught naked, so a lot of people can probably relate to this particular section. After being seemingly betrayed by Snake, Raiden gets captured by Olga Gurlukovich, only to be almost immediately freed by her, explaining to him that they need to allow Raiden to be captured in order to allow Snake to infiltrate Arsenal Gear. The player then must face a stealth section with nothing at all, not even clothes, and get past the guards to reach Snake, who thankfully has his equipment.

#5: The Ending
“Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater ” (2004)

After the death of The Boss and the end of Operation Snake Eater, Naked Snake was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the title ''Big Boss'' by the President of the United States due to his accomplishments. Greatly affected about the mission, Snake discovered that the entire operation was a ruse by Washington to get the Philosopher's Legacy. He then realizes The Boss was the true hero: blaming himself for her death, he salutes the grave of a true patriot.

#4: Crawling through the microwave
“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” (2008)

As a final assault on Outer Haven, Snake must go through a microwave hallway with Otacon’s robot to disable GW, the Patriots AI system. While crawling to get to the end, the screen is split in half, showing your friends and comrades struggling and dying in the hopes of protecting Snake for enough time to stop everything. This not only makes for good story telling, but was also an excellent design to choice as it shows players that time is running out fast and they must get through no matter what.

#3: Solid Snake Vs Liquid Ocalot
“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” (2008)

The final showdown of the final chapter. Being the last boss in the Metal Gear Solid timeline, Ocelot doesn't waste any time, he injects himself and Snake with nanomachines and fights him right away. Perhaps the best 4th wall break in gaming, after entering a room filled with some creepy ambience effects and music, Meryl start acting weird to the point Snake must knock her out in order to stop her. He then realizes she was controlled by Psycho Mantis, a member of FOXHOUND, which uses psychic powers to control and read people's mind. Psycho Mantis then begins to prove his powers by making the controller vibrate and reading the player's memory card to tell him which games they’ve been playing recently. The only way to defeat this psychic invader is to change your controller from port 1 to port 2, or else he’ll be able to read your every move.

Everything in Snake Eater had been leading up to this one moment: The Master versus the Apprentice. In the middle of a field of Easter lilies, the player must use everything they’ve learned throughout the game to sneak around just like The Boss does by changing camouflage, and wait until the right moment to attack. In the end, The Boss falls just as she planned, but before she passes away, she gives Snake the Philosopher's Legacy.
