Top 10 Moments That Made Us Love Andrew Garfield

We all owe BuzzFeed a big, warm thank-you for this series. Andrew, despite his claim of flattery being the way to his heart, gets very adorably flustered during this video. He somehow manages to go off on a few philosophical or otherwise introspective tangents–yes, in the middle of thirst tweets–but, let’s be real, it wouldn’t be an Andrew Garfield reaction if he didn’t. He takes the “Daddies of all daddies” comment maybe a little too literally, but we love him even more for it. Was that enough flattery, Andrew? Did we work our way into your heart?

Andrew Garfield always decimates every single role he’s in and Eduardo Saverin in “The Social Network” is a perfect example of this. We imagine it’s a difficult feat to shine alongside the likes of Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake, but Andrew totally steals the show! You’re probably thinking of the famous scene right now, but just in case you aren’t, roll the clip! [“Sorry, My Prada's at the Cleaners!”] His indignation is so plainly written in every fiber of his being and every single one of his lines is delivered with a side of spine-chills! It’s a crime he didn’t win an Oscar for this performance!

The best part of this whole ordeal is how they’re just there, in the background, smooching it up… The story behind this started out with a joke–which seems almost inevitable, in hindsight, if you’re seating Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield next to each other. The idea was that, if Ryan Reynolds won, he would turn to his wife, as if to kiss her, as one does when they win a Golden Globe. But, at the last second, he’d steer right into Andrew and plant one one him instead! Even though Reynolds lost to Ryan Gosling, he and Andrew still kissed, totally stealing the moment from Gosling's win!

We’ll say it again: Where’s his Oscar?! Alongside Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield coveys a stunning emotional performance in the epic historical drama, “Silence”. He plays Sebastião Rodrigues, a young Jesuit priest, who is ultimately forced to watch his friend and fellow priest drown. The scene’s stakes are enormously high with the four prisoners being thrown off the boat one by one and their fates resting entirely in Garupe’s hands. In the end, it was Rodrigues’ desperate pleas on the shoreline that reduced us to tears. This is definitely one of Andrew’s more dramatic roles and he totally crushes it! Seriously, this man just oozes talent!

Yeah, so he really undersold himself in that Stephen Colbert interview. The fact that we didn’t know Andrew Garfield could sing up until very recently is an outright sin. Directed by the wonderful Lin-Manuel Miranda, this is a musical that really demonstrates Andrew’s theater roots. Not only is his voice amazing, but the energy he puts into each song is unmatched. “Therapy” is, especially, a noteworthy mention. On top of its insanely fast pace, Andrew and the lovely Vanessa Hudgens manage to convey palpable emotions hidden beneath fake smiles. Intercut with the emotional break up scene, Andrew positively knocks this performance out of the park! (Or should we say, explodes it out of the park… You know, ‘cause, like, “Tick, Tick… Boom!”

This scene comes early enough in the movie but it’s so masterfully executed. In just four words, we learn everything we need to know about Desmond Doss. In case you haven’t seen the movie, we’ll give you the context. Doss is a young soldier who holds his morals and religious beliefs close to him. Because of this, he’s put through the wringer by pretty much everyone in his unit. One night he’s beaten badly, and, the next morning, when he’s all banged up, Sergeant Howell’s ready to send him home. Doss refuses and, when he’s asked to identify the men that beat him, he plays dumb. We have no doubt the script of this movie was already powerful by itself, but Andrew’s delivery really takes it to the next level.

After a sweet smooch with Stephen Colbert back in 2017, Andrew returned to the show to talk about “Tick, Tick… Boom!” During the interview, Colbert brings up Jonathan Larson, the original playwright of the musical, and his death. This leads them to the subject of Andrew’s mother’s more recent passing. Andrew has this really beautiful outlook on death and grief. He says grief is just unexpressed love, and how he hopes the grief will stay with him for that reason. Losing a parent is already incredibly difficult, and to honor your emotions the way Andrew does is unbelievably admirable.

As much as we love Tom and Tobey, we’re gonna have to give the title of funniest Spider-Man to Andrew. For starters, the car thief scene is probably one of the most hilarious Spidey moments of all time. There’s just something about the way Andrew speaks that makes his lines so ridiculously funny. When we think about Spider-Man from the comics, we immediately think of sarcastic quips in the middle of chaotic fights, and, we have to say, Andrew fills the role so perfectly. The basketball scene with Flash also had us in stitches, not to mention the scene with his fake clumsiness in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”. Oh, and we can’t forget about “I was cleaning the chimney”!

These two have so many great moments together in the spotlight. Even though they’re no longer together, it’s clear Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone still hold each other in high regard. Of course, their chemistry as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy is everything, (Xref1) but their interactions as a real-life couple were pretty awesome too. Just take the SNL sketch where Chris Martin helped them get the iconic bridge scene kiss in “Spider-Man 2”. (Xref3) Not only is it absolutely hysterical, it also shows just how comfortable they were with each other (both on and off screen)! (xref2)

Did anyone else let out a choked sob in the middle of the theater? It’s pretty simple: if Andrew’s crying, we’re crying! Not only was it the treat of a lifetime getting to see Andrew and Tobey reprising their roles, there were also a ton of callbacks to their movies. One of the best–if not, the best–has to be Andrew’s Peter redeeming himself. We all remember the devastating ending to “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”– an ending that, honestly, we still haven’t recovered from. (Xref) Andrew’s acting was just as great then as it is in “No Way Home”, when, this time, he manages to catch the girl falling to her death. This movie really was a love letter to the fans and we cherished every minute of it.
