Top 10 Most Anticipated New Shows of 2016

The details of this supernatural Netflix drama are about as mysterious as its plot. What we do know is that the show is set in the 1980s, and revolves around a town dealing with the disappearance of a young boy. The mystery doesn’t stop there: friends, family, and the police force – which will feature David Harbour as its chief – get involved with secret government experiments, and a little girl with unusual gifts. The motherof the missing boy will be played by none other than Winona Ryder, starring in her first lead role in a television series.

Premiering on Fox, this show is loosely based on the “Lucifer” comic book series that was a spin-off from Neil Gaiman’s popular DC comic, “The Sandman.” Tom Kapinos, the creator of the dramedy “Californication,” adapted the concept for TV. The show has a pretty fun premise: tired of ruling the kingdom of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar decides to move to Los Angeles, where he helps the LAPD punish criminals and runs a nightclub. The show has a lighter tone with a Lucifer who doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously; a nice change from a typical brooding lead.

A Hollywood A-lister and triple threat, Jennifer Lopez has more than earned her acting cred with multiple box-office hits. But in 2016, she’s taking her acting talents to the small-screen as a NYPD detective who may or may not be covering up the crimes of her corrupt co-workers on the force. Premiering on NBC, this show will be full of twists and turns as we try to figure just which side of the law she’s really on. The cast also includes Ray Liotta as a police lieutenant and Drea de Matteo as another detective, ensuring this is a must-watch.

HBO has been teasing us with this one for a while now, but this time they’re not messing around. Based on a Michael Crichton western-thriller film of the same name, the show tells the story of a futuristic theme park where robots roam free and anything goes. Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan’s brother, adapted it for TV with the help of J.J. Abrams as an executive producer. The cast is stacked with Hollywood heavyweights like Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, and Ed Harris, to name only a few.

TV continues to attract some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, so it was only a matter of time before James Franco returned to his acting roots. Franco stars as high school teacher Jake Epping, who discovers a time travel portal that sends him back in time to stop the assassination ofJohn F. Kennedy. His mission isn’t so simple though, as he undoubtedly faces many obstacles along the way. The series was adapted for Hulu from the Stephen King novel of the same name, and J.J. Abrams is one of the show’s executive producers, so we can’t wait to sink our teeth into this one.

Starring Dominic Cooper, this new AMC show sounds delightfully wicked. Cooper plays Jesse Custer, a small-town preacher who is briefly possessed by an unknown entity, which leaves him with unusual powers. With his newfound powers, Jesse teams up with his ex-girlfriend and an Irish vampire on a quest to find God. With the help of Sony Pictures Television, funny man Seth Rogen, along with frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg, adapted the show from the beloved comic book series. The duo also directed the pilot, and from the show’s trailer, it looks like the perfect blend of horror and comedy.

Airing on Cinemax, this show is a horror drama about Kyle Barnes, a young man who struggles to figure out why he’s suffered from numerous supernatural possessions over the course of his life. You know, just your average young adult problems. Patrick Fugit plays the lead character in this 10-episode series. The show is a new idea from Robert Kirkman, the creator of the comic “Invincible” and another little-known comic called “The Walking Dead.” Judging from the eerie trailer, this one promises to give you nightmares!

The name of this show pretty much says it all. The CW seems to be on a roll with bringing comics to the small screen, so why fix what isn’t broken? This show is a spinoff of the successful adaptations “Arrow” and “The Flash,” and tells the story of Rip Hunter, who travels back in time to bring together a band of heroes and villains to stop the evil Vandal Savage from taking over the world. If it’s anything like its predecessors, we can expect snappy dialogue, non-stop action, and fun crossover episodes. Sign us up!

HBO and Martin Scorsese. Do we really need to say anything else? Do we even need to mention that the show is a music drama set in 1970sNew York? Bobby Cannavale of “Boardwalk Empire” stars as record executive Richie Finestra, who’s trying to re-brand his label and find a newsound in the changing music scene. The cast is stacked with familiar names such as Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano, and Andrew Dice Clay for the 10-episode first season. Oh yeah, one more thing—Mick Jagger is doing the soundtrack.

Don’t call it a comeback, but do call it one of the most anticipated TV events…EVER. Returning to Fox on January 24th, everyone’s favorite FBI investigation duo will be back for a six-part miniseries. The last time Agents Mulder and Scully were on the air was in 2002– almost 15 years ago. Since then, fans had to tide themselves over with the 2008 movie, “X-Files: I Want to Believe”– but we all want to believe this show will blow the film out of the water. We’re all ready for new conspiracy theories to obsess over!
